Freddy Review
After the massive success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, especially in the testing times, filmmakers had their eyes set on Kartik Aaryan.
Right after that comes Shashanka Ghosh's 'Freddy'. Getting away from his comfort zone once again after Dhamaka, Kartik Aaryan is now an obsessed psychopath who turns into a murderer. Will he will be able to break that genre barrier and shine in this never-seen-before avatar?
The plot and screenplay
The plot of the film revolves around a dentist 'Freddy Ginwala' played by Kartik Aaryan, who is a socially awkward person eager to find love and get married. After falling in love with a married girl Kaizaan, he faces a traumatic occurrence in his life which turns him into a dark murderer and obsessed person. The story is a domino effect of major plot twists and surprises surrounding two individuals leading to a predictable climax.
The screenplay is layered thoughtfully, but the film does feel stretched at some points.
The Kartik Aaryan show
Can you recall what happened when Varun Dhawan did Badlapur? You can get a deja vu here with Kartik Aaryan. Having the image of a romantic lover boy, mastered in playing the boy next door characters, rises as a dark and mysterious character in Freddy and shines. His angst, emotions, obsession, craziness, and everything he does on screen land well. Kartik Aaryan gets in the shoe of the character with earnestness and his physical transformation for the role is like a cherry on the cake.
Other Performances
Talking about other characters, Alaya F who plays Kartik Aaryan's love interest a well has a dark role (PS: it's a spoiler, so not giving it out). She delivers what the script asks out of her and has a long way to go.
Other key characters of the film also does justice to their parts.
The BGM and Camera work
The BGM of Freddy is something that actually keeps up with the thrill. The beats of the song 'Kala Jaadu' in middle of the film own the capacity to give you goosebumps.
Some camera shots are commendable, especially the intermission scene, where Kartik Aaryan is seen lying on the floor and the camera is moved in a pan-circular motion.
The Verdict
Freddy is a well-crafted romantic thriller, bringing out a novel and never-seen before side of Kartik Aaryan, which surely will be celebrated.
