Is there any role that Shah Rukh Khan can't pull off with ease. Well, after watching 'Raees' all my doubts got cleared that King Khan in all senses has the capacity to take the complete burden of a films solely on his shoulders. However, this time he had one more versatile actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui to help him anchor their ship!
Well, coming back to the film, instead of going round the bush, I would like to put it simple and straight: 'Raees' is just another mediocre drama of the seventies era. A bit redefined though.
The movie is stretched unnecessarily. There are innumerable loopholes and many illogical scenes. There are various scenes that will instantly remind you of Ajay Devgn's "Once upon a time in Mumbai". It's very clear that songs are forcibly added, except for 'Laila mein Laila' and 'Udi Udi Jaaye'.
About the characters:
Shah Rukh Khan a.k.a 'Raees' is the only attraction to the film. After doing innumerable romantic flicks, SRK has donned the hat of a hot and smart spectacled goon who doesn't like it when any calls him "battery"! And this time again he has pulled off his character flawlessly. Even at 51 he is hot and handsome and will make girls and women go weak on knees. He is killing it with his attitude and hard-hitting dialogues. Then comes the action and trust me you won't believe your eyes for the first few minutes that is this the same SRK smashing the goons who is otherwise seen dancing in the snow with the gorgeous heroines.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui who is seen playing the role of ACP Majmudar is behind the life of our lead hero Raees. He has taken this oath to put him behind the bars. Nawaz had the best and the most unexpected entry in the film. Though his dialogues are witty and humorous, he has presented them in a very powerful manner. They are sure to leave an impact on the minds of the audience.
Mahira Khan is a complete waste in the film. A great waste of talent! She is just restricted to the songs, very few emotional scenes and extremely little romance. She has not added anything to her character.
What we liked about the film:
High octane action sequences. (Note: Action here is something that is not for the weak-heart.)
Jaw-dropping fight scenes put up by Shah Rukh Khan. (Shah Rukh Khan who was used to spreading arms is breaking others arms this time)
Nawazuddin's brilliant performance i.e. a mix of both wittiness and seriousness at the same time.
Dialogues: A lot has been said about the dialogues of 'Raees'. But, looked like maximum of them were used in the trailer itself. However, they are the USP of the film. Some of the best one's that we liked are:
"Baniya ka Dimaag aur Miyanbhai ki daring".
"Amijaan kehti thi koi dhanda chota nahi hota aur dhande se bada koi dharam nahi hota."
"Agar katne ka daar hota na, toh patang nahi chadhata, phirki pakadta."
"Din aur raat logo k liye hote hai. Shero ka toh zamana hota hai."
What we didn't like:
Loose ends aren't rectified, instead are left on viewers discretion.
Illogical scenes and poor screen play at many occasions has led to the film getting stretchy and boring.
Under usage of highly talented actors: The director could have pulled out some unique characteristics of the highly versatile actors that he was blessed with in the film.
Climax is abruptly put up: It could have been a much better movie, if screenplay would have been rectified along with some crisp editing.
Overall:
The movie is one time watch. But again, don't have any expectations except for some amazing performances by SRK and Nawaz, few light moments along with some strong dialogues.

The movie would have gotten 5 stars if it didnt have Mahira Khan or any songs in it.

SRK particularly excels in scenes where he shows extreme anger and also the one where he breaks down. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is at his impressive best and gets some of the best dialogues in the film.
