A lawyer from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, was arrested by Mumbai police on Tuesday for allegedly issuing death threats to Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and demanding Rs 50 lakh. The accused, Faizan Khan, 42, is expected to be presented in a Raipur court for transit remand to Mumbai, where police will seek his custody.

According to senior Raipur police officials, Khan had been summoned by Mumbai authorities following the threat call but did not respond. Mumbai and Raipur police have yet to disclose the motive behind the alleged threat. Khan, however, claims his phone was stolen and insists that someone else made the threatening call to implicate him.

Last Tuesday, a caller identifying himself as ‘Hindustani’ contacted the Bandra police station, warning that he was outside Mannat, Shah Rukh Khan's residence, and threatening harm if his Rs 50 lakh demand was unmet. Authorities traced the call to a mobile registered under Faizan Khan’s name in Raipur. Khan reported his phone as stolen on November 2, the same day as Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday, and filed a complaint with local police.

After he failed to appear in Mumbai as instructed, Khan was detained. Police sources also revealed that Khan had previously been booked for a minor offence earlier this year. In addition, he had earlier filed a complaint against Shah Rukh Khan over a dialogue in the 1994 film Anjaam that referenced deer hunting.

Following the threat, Mumbai police registered an FIR under Sections 308(4) and 351(3)(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to extortion and criminal intimidation, and security around Shah Rukh Khan's residence has been heightened.
