The world of movies has progressed with time, and for the better. Today, filmmakers do not step away from throwing caution to the winds and are all in for raw and real storytelling. Besides, the audience too has evolved in terms of the content they like to invest their time and have a developed taste for a critical plotline contrary to the masala-drama movies in the past. However, the Bollywood business has also paved its way to a boom of old movies getting reinvented and presented to the audience in a brand new avatar, which in layman’s language is called Remakes!
The idea of remakes is abstract as some films when remade manage to impress the audience, while some fail to create the same magic as the classic old films. Producer and former chairperson of the Central Board Of Film Certification Pahlaj Nihalani also has a say on this similar subject, who feels there is nothing like original cinema.
Pahlaj has come out in support of Sunny Deol’s son Karan’s debut film Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas in reaction to many people calling the film outdated in terms of content. The romantic drama is based on a love story set in snowy hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh with all of the complexities of love, and the audience has criticized the storyline for being obsolete.
“What is outdated?” Nihalani demands to know. “What was unfashionable yesterday is trending today. And what is considered outdated today would be in vogue tomorrow. It’s a cycle. And all Indian cinema is based on just a handful of ideas. The style of putting across those ideas keeps changing, but the ideas remain the same,” states Pahlaj.

He points out a resemblance of an earlier film to Ayushmann-Nushrat’s film. “This whole idea of a man seducing men by impersonating a woman’s voice on the phone was done in my film Shola Aur Shabnam 29 years ago. In that film, Govinda cons Anupam Kher by speaking in a woman’s voice.”
Nihalani further adds that he isn’t accusing the makers of Dream Girl of copying his film, stating “All I’m saying is, ideas and trends tend to be cyclic. They keep coming back after a break. So please don’t jump to conclusions about Karan Deol’s debut film Pal Pal Di Ke Paas”, and feels that the Deol newbie deserves a chance. “Writing him off even before his film just because he is from a film family is wrong. Let the boy try to prove himself. Then react as you like”, comments the veteran film producer.
