NCP leader Baba Siddique was shot dead outside his son Zeeshan’s office in Bandra East, Mumbai, on Saturday. Three attackers carried out the incident, according to initial reports. The attackers targeted Siddique as he stood near Zeeshan’s office.
"Mumbai police chief informed me that two suspects have been arrested. One is from UP and the other from Haryana. The third attacker is still missing, but the police are on the lookout for him," said Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to HT.
Siddique was rushed to Lilawati Hospital after the shooting, but sadly, he did not survive. A police official informed PTI that two to three shots were fired, and the investigation is currently underway. Police teams are in the area to gather more information.
Earlier this year, in February, Baba Siddique ended his 48-year-long political career with Congress and joined Ajit Pawar’s faction of NCP. He had posted on X (formerly Twitter), “I joined Congress as a teenager, and after 48 years, I am resigning from the party’s primary membership with immediate effect."
Baba Siddique was a well-known figure in Mumbai’s politics. He served as a three-term MLA from the Bandra West assembly constituency. However, in the 2014 assembly elections, he lost the seat to BJP’s Ashish Shelar.
During his political career, Siddique held several important positions, including minister of state for food and civil supplies, labour, FDA, and consumer protection in the Congress-led government of the early 2000s.
