Nawazuddin Siddiqui is set to take on a challenging role as Upendra Rajkhowa in an upcoming biopic. Rajkhowa, a former judge from Assam, was sentenced to death in 1970 for the brutal murder of his wife and three daughters. He was executed by hanging at Jorhat Jail, yet he never revealed his motive for the crimes.
Faizuddin, Rajkhowa’s brother and the film’s producer, has confirmed the project. “I was fascinated by this story and felt compelled to bring it to the screen,” he said. “Nawaz is known for his versatility, and I am thrilled to work with him on this film.”
Who Was Upendra Rajkhowa?
Rajkhowa began his judicial career in 1969 as a judge at the Dhubri District and Sessions Court in Lower Assam. He initially stayed alone at the Circuit House before moving to the official residence with his wife, Putuli, and their three daughters—Nirmali (Linu), Jonali (Luna), and Rupali (Bhantu). Luna and Bhantu soon returned to Guwahati for their studies.
The Unsettling Incident
On January 14, 1970, Rajkhowa instructed peons to dig two pits on his property. Initially, he claimed he wanted to plant flowers, but later he had another pit dug.
On February 10, 1970, Saraswati Puja day, Rajkhowa was last seen with his wife and eldest daughter by the fireplace. Soon after, the two other daughters also disappeared.
The Arrest and Confession
The shocking truth emerged after Rajkhowa was arrested. According to Barada Sarma, then IGP of Assam Police, Rajkhowa admitted to killing his wife and eldest daughter on February 11, 1970. He also confessed to murdering the other two daughters on February 25, 1970. Rajkhowa allegedly paid his servant, Umesh Baishya, Rs 1,000 for his help. The bodies were buried in the residence’s compound. The autopsy revealed haemorrhage as the cause of death, and Baishya later confessed to striking the women with a hard object.
This grim story will soon be portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, promising a gripping and intense film.
