Movie Review : Dolly Ki Doli

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat, Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma, Gulfam Khan, Archana Puran Singh, Saif Ali Khan, Malaika Arora Khan; Director: Abhishek Dogra; Rating: ***

A woman gets married to a guy and next morning runs away with all the riches and jewellery in the house. A fun to watch on-screen, but ever thought how does it feels being that conned groom or his family? Difficult, right! Anyways, there are few stories which are meant only to be seen on-screen, but Dolly Ki Doli is not one of them. The film story is inspired from a real life incident.

The story of the film revolves around Dolly's (Sonam Kapoor) marriages, cons and robberies along with her fake family. Her fake brother researches and finds potential groom for Dolly and she gets married to them in grand weddings. However, she never consummates her marriage nor does she get kissed by any of the guy she marries. Though the weddings are grand but her fake photographer always make sure that she is not clearly visible in any of the pictures. As her number of victim increases, the case of 'looteri dulhan' becomes a serious matter for cops. Though the gang makes sure that Dolly never gets clicked in any of the wedding, Police manages to get her sketch made and starts searching for her.

The story has lot of loopholes like, in any of the grand wedding no one click a picture of the beautiful bride in selfie era, gets married to n number of guys but none of the guy even gets to kiss her, after a grand Indian wedding when our house gets filled by at least half a dozen of relatives she is always lucky to have just the guy and his parents on the wedding night, she doesn't kiss anyone to maintain her purity but she can con and break hearts and more you can notice when you watch the film.

Sonam's character is as consistent as her radiant smile and stylish outfits in every film, but these kinds of role suits her. Rajkummar Rao (Sonu Sarawat) as a typical Harayani Jat and Varun Sharma (Manoj Singh Chadda) as a typical Punjabi delhite did a great job, while Pulkit Samrat's (Robin Singh) character is inspired by Robin Hood Pandey (Dabangg). Be it expressions, dialogue delivery, or even her slight overacting Archana Puran Singh did a stellar job as Manoj's Punjabi mother. Others cast of the film was perfect in their respective roles.

Music in the film is different from the kind we have heard in other films with marriage backdrop. A couple of dance numbers and a soulful melody have kept the fun element going. After four fast paced numbers, we have one romantic slow track, Mere Naina Kafir Hogaye, which is soothing and nice. Overall, the music of the film is well packaged, from the composition to the lyrics to the singing and presentation.

Dolly Ki Doli is a good entertainer in the first half but fails to keep up with the charm and fun in the second half. Despite of loopholes and little low on energy in second half, Varun Sharma and Archana Puran Singh are major source of laughter. All-in-all, it is a good one time watch.
