After actor Varun Dhawan, filmmaker Karan Johar on Wednesday apologised for his "nepotism rocks" act at the IIFA Awards in New Jersey that created a stir on social media last week.

Karan, the son of late filmmaker Yash Johar, along with actors Varun and Saif Ali Khan, took a jibe at actress Kangana Ranaut by bringing up the nepotism debate at the awards gala.

Later, they received flak on social media with Twitteraties calling their act "disappointing".

While Varun apologised for the act on Twitter on Tuesday, Karan said that he also feels that it's talent that rocks and not nepotism.

"Of course, I don't believe that 'nepotism rocks'. Of course, I believe that only talent rocks. If anything that rocks, it's your talent, hard work and conviction. It's the energy you bring to your job," Karan said in an interview with NDTV news channel.

"What we said was meant to be a joke, which I think has been misplaced, misunderstood and I think it went wrong. I regret it," he added.

Karan also said that it was entirely his idea.

"The idea of that joke was entirely mine, so I take onus of the idea of what we said. And I think we went a bit too far with the Kangana mention," Karan said.

Karan and Saif, who were hosting the gala, revisited the much-talked about nepotism issue that started in Bollywood when Kangana branded Karan as a "flagbearer of nepotism" on his chat show "Koffee With Karan" earlier this year.

"No matter what I say or feel about my issues with what Kangana said on my talk show 'Koffee With Karan', I think I was raised to be a dignified, a chivalrous and a decent person. That's the upbringing that I was given and I feel that I failed on those accounts," Karan said.

"I felt that no matter what my thoughts or personal issues are on this, I should not have repeatedly brought that up. For that, I'm deeply regretful," he added.

When Varun joined the two celebrities on stage at the Metlife Stadium to receive the Best Performance in a Comic Role for "Dishoom", Saif joked that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father.

"You are here because of your papa," Saif quipped.

Varun said: "And you're here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore)."

Karan then promptly added: "I am here because of my papa (late filmmaker Yash Johar)."

They then said in unison: "Nepotism rocks."

While addressing the charge of nepotism, Karan said: "I want to once and for all say and close this chapter after this and subsequently I will not speak about nepotism nor Kangana because it would be distasteful for her and it would be ungraceful at my end, which I've already been.

"Nepotism is easy access, nobody can deny that, but what you do with that access is what moulds you into a professional."

I can't believe they really did something so horrible in the IIFA. I can understand Karan's desperation to insult Kangana because he would never in his life forget that insult of Kangana, more so because those were truth. And he knows most people resonates with those thoughts, irrespective of their opinion about Kangana. And for Varun it's just fighting for his godfather. But I was surprised that Saif indulged into such distasteful thing. Doesn't go with his class and education.
Anyways it really doesn't matter whether I like Kangana or not, all I want to say that I salute her for saying things which no one dares saying despite being an outsider in the industry.

Mr. Johar, for your information, talent definitely rocks, but most of the people in your film are not too talented. Talented ones are either sidies or somewhere around. Second, most of your films are terrible with simply nothing new to offer...
Saif, Alia and Dhawan, your chelas who blabber non sense under your influence need to know few things...

Alia, baby except for in a couple of movies, you are terrible actor, who wouldn't have been noticed had you not been Mahesh daddy's daughter... Just for your information...

Saif... My my... From where do I start for you... Besdies being Tagore's son, you were husband to Amrita Singh, probably a lucky charm to help you reach where you are!! When I watch your initial movies, you sucked back then...but I won't blame you for there were so less effects and editing options to make you look better.. You have grown as an actor today, but if u didn't have the start off with names like Tagore and Amrita, where would have you been? Learn to credit them rather than taking up all the fame for yourself

On the contrary there are definitely few deserving who came through contacts, and would have made their name anyway without being son of legends. Hritik being one of them..
Won't comment on Shahid, but I am glad that this guy, when he had entered the industry was nothing more than prop! Because he chose to not use Pankaj ka name!!

Karan should do a favor to people by shutting his mouth. All the time he opens his mouth and then regrets saying it so better just shut your mouth to keep yourself away from embarrassment and making a fool out of yourself ... I always loved his movies but his personality is what started irritating me now...

Atleast karan apologised. I hope once and for all karan close this matter and never speak about nepotisim again. Karan makes good films and he should focus on that rather than making some meaingless remarks on nepotism. I respect johar as a filmaker and human being. I hope he won't repeat this again.

You better be shut up Mr. Johar. You don't even have a single award in your credit even after you had support from all levels of film industry. You never struggled to get in to fandom. But she did.. and she worked hard and that's why she has 3 national awards in her credit. Please respect her for that atleast. Don't be jealous. And Kangana is one of my fav actor in whole Indian Cinema because of her no-nonsense way of dealing things. You must learn something from her rather than promoting all young lads and lass of your friends..
