Kangana Ranaut, the star and director of the upcoming political drama Emergency, has agreed to implement the modifications suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The changes come after the film became embroiled in controversy, facing opposition from various groups, particularly for its portrayal of the Sikh community. Despite the hurdles, Kangana and her team are moving forward with the necessary edits, which have paved the way for its release after approval.
The movie, co-produced by Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios, had initially run into legal trouble when the co-producers, Zee Studios, petitioned the Bombay High Court, requesting the release of the censor certificate. The film's release has been delayed due to objections raised by some organizations, who claim that certain elements of the film misrepresent the Sikh community. This controversy had led to demands for a ban on the film.
Last week, the CBFC proposed a few minor edits to the movie. As per reports, these changes involve tweaking certain words, with minimal impact on the film's overall runtime. Kangana Ranaut, through her legal representatives, expressed her acceptance of these cuts. Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, representing the CBFC, informed the court of the same, while Zee Studios’ legal team emphasized the need for confirmation that no further changes would be demanded. The court has postponed further hearings, with the next session scheduled for Thursday.
Emergency was initially slated for a September 6 release, but the certification delays forced a postponement. Kangana took to social media to update fans about the situation, explaining that the release had been postponed due to the pending censor board clearance. She assured her followers that a new release date would be announced soon.
The film is a biographical political thriller based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, focusing on the 21-month Emergency period she imposed from 1975 to 1977. Kangana plays the role of Indira Gandhi, a performance that has garnered significant attention. The film also features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhry in key roles.
