Bharat ka Veer Putra - Maharana Pratap on Sony TV is all set to depict the track of Mughal Emperor Akbar and his story is incomplete without the mention of Maham Anga - his foster mother who took care of him completely through his growing up years since his own real mother was away most of the time to be with his father Humayun who was in exile. Playing this important character is veteran actress Jaya Bhattacharya who is noted for her performance packed roles.
Talking about her character in the show, Jaya who has obviously done her research says, "As you know I play Maham Anga who is known to be Emperor Akbar's foster mother. She loved him as her own child and that love was real due to which Akbar comes under her control and spell. He is completely her prodigy and Maham Anga has devoted herself completely to Akbar and groomed him with a single thought in mind which is that he should be the King. There are various shades to the character - so she is loving while also being a strict disciplinarian sometimes. The negative shade to her character kicks in when she becomes aware that he is totally under control and she wants to take over the control of the Sultanat."
Keeping with the look of her character, Jaya will be seen in plain clothes in the show, "My look as Maham Anga is completely de-glamorised. She is not a queen and doesn't even aspire to be one. Basically she is a daasi who has now become a head daasi but nothing more than that. So my garb has to be very basic. There is hardly any make-up, no jewellery at all and the colors used for my character's clothes are grey and black."
Currently the Zee TV show, Jodha Akbar too is depicting the character played b Ashwini Kalsekar. Will there be any difference in the portrayal of Maham Anga in Maharana Pratap? "History cannot be changed so the character is the same however in Maharana Pratap we will be showing the influence of Maham Anga since Akbar's teenage years whereas in the other show they have shown him getting the throne and power so there the conflict has already started. Here we will be showing how she influences him right through his growing years, sets him right , reminding him of his duties and encouraging him to be the next Emperor. So we are going in details and in-depth while portraying the character."

Apart from this show, Jaya is not doing much lately. She has cultivated an image for herself which suggests that she does not work for money but for the creative satisfaction and is only into doing less but good creative work. Jaya who became a household name after Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi went on to do many shows but reduced her work load in the recent past. After doing episodics her last long running show was Ek Veer Stree Ki Kahaani Jhansi Ki Rani on Zee TV where she played Sakkubai. Jaya admits that it was her conscious decision to stay away from TV, "To be honest I was not getting brilliant roles so I was busy helping my rakhi brother with his production house. I learnt a lot many things in the production department when I assisted him behind the camera."
However, she was not completely out of scene too, and continued acting whenever it was a good opportunity, "I was also acting in my brother's show Akhand Saubhyagavati Bhav on DD, then I did some episodes of Savdhaan India and also doing that one story for Ekta Kapoor's Ek Thhi Naayka with Smriti Zubin Irani and Amar Upadhyay was fun. In the midst of all this I was offered Balika Vadhu but they wanted 20 days in a month which was not possible for me. Talks were on for Uttaran too but ultimately it didn't happen. But I am happy with the work I have done so far and the work I am doing now."
Well, now we hope to see more of you Jaya!
