Originally named Jaya Bhaduri, the actress-turned-politician decided to adopt her husband Amitabh Bachchan's name as a suffix after their marriage. However, during the parliamentary session on July 29, when she was addressed by the combined name, Mrs. Bachchan expressed her displeasure to Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh.

Mr. Harivash gracefully read the politician's name from a cue placed in front of him and extended an invitation for her to address the assembly.“Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please.” Jaya was quick to reply, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan).” The man promptly clarified that he had mentioned precisely what her name was officially registered as.

Jaya Bachchan, on the other hand, persisted in speaking in Hindi, which can be roughly translated as...“Some new methods have emerged that women have to be known by their husband’s name. Women have no identity. They have no achievements, no identity of their own. This new thing, I just…”

Several users called her ‘strong’ and praised her choice of standing up for herself. One user opined, “People today are pretty full of themselves. If there would be any other woman instead of her, she would have created a havoc. totally love you jaya maam for your sophistication."

However, a large portion of the Internet criticized her for engaging in the right debate at the wrong venue. A user commented, “How can you say "unki koi uplabdhi nai hai." She should remember her that she is only known by Amitabh Bachchan’s wife and nothing else."

Jaya Bachchan has been married to the legendary Amitabh Bachchan since 1973 and has two children with him - Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda.

@isha Did I say I am against patriarchy? Quit strawmaning my position. Every single woman in the world should be known by her father’s last name because that’s her identity and lineage. The reason why I didn’t mention men is because men don’t change their last names after marriage. Only women do.

Under Section 3 of the Name Act, you may continue to use your current last/family name, your spouse's last/family name or a combination of both last/family names. It is completely her choice, and no law in India demands a woman to change her surname after marriage. Societal implications vary, and opinions differ! However, I believe it is always best to carry your own identity rather than someone else's! Prefer to be yourself rather than reflect another person's identity.

There should be an international law prohibiting women from taking their husband’s last name or any other last name. A woman MUST ALWAYS be known by her father’s last name regardless of her marital status.
