Imtiaz Ali reveals Diljit narrated story of THIS punjabi film before shooting for Amar Singh Chamkila

Imtiaz Ali, renowned for helming films like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, and Rockstar, has been a prominent figure in Bollywood for over two decades. His latest directorial venture was Amar Singh Chamkila, featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. Imtiaz recently shared that Diljit had discussed his 2023 film, Jodi, with him before opting for Amar Singh Chamkila.

In a chat with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali talked about reaching out to Diljit Dosanjh for the main role in his movie, Amar Singh Chamkila. Imtiaz mentioned that Diljit was part of a film named Jodi, which draws inspiration from Chamkila's life. He also shared that the actor showed him snippets of the 2023 historical film.

"Strangely, when I went to tell him the story of Chamkila, toh he was like 'dekhiye sir aap chahoge toh main to kar raha hoon (Look sir, if you want me to do this film, I am on it)...but let me tell you the story of Jodi and you see whether you want to take me because this I have already done'," he added.

The director of Amar Singh Chamkila emphasized that when he went to narrate his film to Diljit, the actor actually shared the story of Jodi with him before proceeding with the 2024 movie. Imtiaz mentioned that Diljit had a deeper understanding of Chamkila compared to himself.

Amberdeep Singh directed Jodi, the Punjabi romantic comedy period film, which hit screens last year. The movie featured Diljit Dosanjh and Nimrat Khaira in the lead roles, with Diljit portraying the character of Amar Singh Sitaara in the 2023 film.

Amar Singh Chamkila, the biographical film, depicted the life of a Punjabi folk musician named Amar Singh Chamkila. The movie premiered on OTT platforms on April 12 this year and is now available for streaming on Netflix. Diljit portrayed the main role, while Parineeti played the character of Amarjot Kaur, Chamkila's second wife in the film.

Before starring in Amar Singh Chamkila, Diljit Dosanjh featured in Rajesh A Krishnan's movie Crew alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon earlier this year. Diljit has a diverse filmography, having acted in popular films like Udta Punjab, Arjun Patiala, Phillauri, Soorma, Good Newwz, and Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari.
