Kapoor was born in Chembur, Mumbai to film producer Surinder Kapoor and wife Nirmal Kapoor. His brothers Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor are notable producers in the film business.

Kapoor made his B. Town debut with a small role in Umesh Mehra's Hamare Tumhare (1979). It was only in 1983 that Kapoor landed in his first full fleged role with Woh Saat Din alongside Padmini Kolhapure and Naseeruddin Shah. Yash Chopra's Mashaal (1984) helped Kapoor establish his foothold in the industry and in turn helped him win his first Filmfare award for the Best Supporting Actor. The year 1985 was full of iconic releases for Kapoor from Yudh to Meri Jung. Meri Jung also fetched Kapoor the much coveted Filmfare award for Best Actor. Since then there has been no turning back for this gentleman.  Karma, Janbaaz, Insaaf Ki Awaaz, Chameli Ki Shaadi, Mr. India, Tezaab, Parinda and Eeshwar were all highly successful films in late 1980's.
