As a debutante director, there are a lot of things anyone has to take care of. But in Bollywood, that becomes a lot more difficult if you are making your directorial debut with a suspense thriller, and that too of an already-iconic character.
Diya Annapurna Ghosh, daughter of celebrated filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh just made her debut with the film Bob Biswas a couple of weeks ago. While, I loved the film - the review of which you can read here. But the film has managed to draw in quite some criticism on multiple aspects.
In a recent tell-all interview with us, Ghosh opened up on multiple aspects of the same. Take a look-
As this is your directorial debut, what do you think is the most important aspect when it comes to suspense thrillers?
I would say, it has to be the script. The script is the core and it makes the thriller what it is. If it isn't refined enough, it ends up being a n OTT drama. I also believe that with suspense thrillers, it is important to not spoon-feed the viewers. The element of mystery is what makes the film stand-out and hence 'less is more' is an idea that works perfectly with thrillers. Adding to that, I feel the music and the sound in general also helps make it what it is.
What has been your response to the criticism and mixed response that has come to 'Bob Biswas'?
I think most of the criticism was story-related. I don't really know what to say about that because this is the story we made and it is what it is. Everyone has an opinion in the end of the day and as long as it is not a personal attack, I am fine with it. I think many of them had different expectations from because it was a popular character from Kahaani. I guess in the end if everyone liked and enjoyed the film, it was all worth it.
One of the key points about this criticism was towards the screenplay and the climax being convenient. Do you agree to that or stand by what you made?
I personally stand by it. As I mentioned above, everyone has an opinion but I cannot be affected by it and I totally stand by it. Maybe if the film was a different scenario and it wasn't about a popular character, it would have been a different case altogether. Nevertheless, I believed in my film and it is out for everyone to see.
You have now debuted with a suspense thriller so now are those the same kind of films that you want to go on and direct or are you open to all kinds of genres?
I am actually quite chill with that. As long as the script is good, it doesn't matter what the genre is. I am happy with whatever comes to me. Of course, I love dark comedy and thrillers because I understand that better but yes, I would be game for anything - even a horror or drama.
Bob Biswas is currently streaming on Zee5.

Among them, child marriage girls under the age of 18 account for one-third of the global child marriage girls, and there are at least 1.5 million children every year. From April to August this year, when the epidemic was at its worst, relevant Indian authorities intervened in more than 10,000 child marriage cases.
