Typecasting is a bane for actors that comes with the boon of excelling in a particular role. Bollywood artistes are often landed with characters that seem to be tailor made for them and portray them with such perfection that the film makers and the audience yearn to repeatedly see them in such roles. BollyCurry brings you actors and actresses who have fallen into the rut of being typecast and need to escape at the earliest.
Though his box office clout has gone from strength to strength, the level of versatility in his recent roles has taken a steep dive. His larger-than-life off screen persona has managed to seep into most of his recent roles, be it in Dabanng 2 (2012), Jai Ho (2014) or Kick (2014). Then came Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) where his titular role backed by a heart-touching story endeared him to the audience again. Then it was a case of returning to being 'Prem' in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), the character that earned him much acclaim in the 90's. A classic case of from the pot to the frying pan, we say.
For an actress who reiterates the desire to do better films with roles that solely do not rely on her glamour quotient alone, Leone's recent filmography is a jarring contradiction. Movies such as One Night Stand (2016), Mastizaade (2015), Luv U Alia (2015) and Kuch Kuch Locha Hai (2015) were slammed by the critics and audience alike and without any chart busters in their soundtracks, Leone needs to make a move soon. It's time Leone makes another career-changing move.
Currently a quintessential part of multi-starrers such as Housefull 3 (2016), Happy New Year (2014) and Dhoom 3 (2013), Abhishek Bachchan's career has shaped up to be same as those of Vivek Oberoi or Aftab Shivdasani. The truth seems even more bitter when we realise that the latest blockbuster with him as protagonist was his repeating role in the Dhoom series where the focus and hype is always around the antagonist. Bachchan needs to move away from being typecast as the comic relief in such multi-starrers and choose more challenging roles for a long haul in Bollywood.
Katirina Kaif is an A-list actress who is yet to portray a role that can be considered as a career-defining one - like Rani Mukherji's Black (2005) or Kangana Ranaut's Queen (2014). Unable to leave behind the safe confines of guaranteed commercial success, Kaif continues to opt for similar non-versatile and insignificant roles in superstar movies. It is high time Kaif takes a risk to shun her eye candy image and dare to see if it pays off.
John Abraham's roles in Shootout at Wadala (2013), Welcome Back (2015) and Rocky Handsome (2016) have contributed little to his stature as an actor or even as a bankable action hero. A sculpted body with a few action sequences seem to be the only outline of his characters. Abraham needs to sap into the core of his early performances like those in Dhoom (2004) and Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love (2007) to revive his acting career.
Ek Villain (2014) was supposed to mark the rebirth of Riteish Deshmukh, the actor. Instead, the reality is that his most recent release was Housefull 3 (2016) and his next movie is Great Grand Masti, slated for release later this year. Deshmukh's declaration to not be a part of sex comedies any more is a right choice. But being typecast as Tusshar Kapoor's co-star is probably not best for the actor in him either.
Versatility is the zest of life and Bollywood actors need to break the shackles of being typecast to embrace this. Let us know in the comments below of those artistes you are tired of seeing in the same roles and need a desperate change of track in their careers.
