All colors, shapes, sizes, designs and a vast amount of variety- are bindis a part of our culture or a style statement today? From the average middle class woman to Shania Twain, everyone seems to be bitten by the BINDI bug.

Traditionally, the bindi signified the mystic third eye of a person and was a symbol of auspiciousness, good fortune and festivity. For a contemporary girl today bindis have turned into must have accessories just like her bangles, earrings and purses. And who could have played a more vital role than our Indian Television in spreading this latest fashion across the globe?
From veteran actress Sudha Chandran's snake shaped bindis to the good bahu Kumkum's laal tikka, the get up for female actresses would be incomplete without their third eye. And oh yes who can forget Urvashi Dholakia AKA Komolika - the famous sautan - and her horseshoe and very unique shaped bindis? The delicate and intricate bindis of our girl-next-door Bani are quite popular but women also can not seem to get over the stylish beaded bindis of her villanious sister in law Jigyasa from Kasamh Se. Kashish in Kaahin Toh Hoga seems to be sporting small black dots these days on her forehead - simple yet elegant!

Television ofcourse sets trends and it wasn't behind in setting these new bindi fashion statememnts. Who would have ever thought that a whole book can be written on mere bindis - but ask the Indian Women of today and they'll tell you that matching bindis with outfits is quite an important art! Isn't it ladies?

fab article!

but you know whats odd? in the new leap of kyunki, you saw less and less bahus wearin bindis? lol regardless, i reckon a lot of fun can be had with bindis...esp. if you're a negative character! :P

and wasn't the bindi, in the past, only used by married women? but now, since they're too cool, everyone uses them! hehehe
although i don't...:P

First of all, great article Priyaa.

I like how actressess portray their bindis, whether they are evil or nice. Bindis automatically portray their characters.
