While there are certain production houses and the makers who come up with excellent content for the viewers all around the globe, there are some shows that are an adaptation of either a book, or a film, or an International television series. Back then, we had shows like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Hum Paanch, Khichdi et al that have managed to rule the audience' hearts after so many years as well. What made these shows stand apart is needless to say - brilliant concept, fine execution and outstanding cast and of course the wit that each of them had.
That was an era and today is an era when the makers are trying their hands on not just one genre but comedy, tragedy, romance - all together. Some manage to please the viewers, some do not. To each his own! Here are some of the show that have been adapted have done quite well with the audience.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on SAB TV -
SAB TV's long running and ruling show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been adapted from a Gujarat comedy strip Duniya Na Oondha Chashma written by writer Taarak Mehta himself. Taarak Mehta... as a show is doing pretty well with the viewers but there is always an exaggerated version that is put forward to the audience. Talking about the difference between the show and the Gujarati strip, the show is completely revolving around the Gada family. Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) and Dayaben (Disha Wakani) are depicted as the centre character in the show. Moreover, Daya is someone who has solution to every problem. On the contrary, Gujarati comic strip is exactly opposite to the show. The comic strip revolves around Taarak Mehta, his boss, professional life and his family. Vital character of the novel is Taarak Mehta and his wife. Dayaben is portrayed completely dumb in the the strip. Moreover, while in the show Jethalal has always an argument with his brother-in-law Sundar, comic strip reads Taarak Mehta faces difference in opinion with his brother-in-law.
Hmm... Stories poles apart but talking about recognition, both have managed to garner accolades in their respective genres.
Ye Hai Mohabbatein on Star Plus -
Ye Hai Mohabbatein is one such show that has totally changed the meaning of a mature love story. Produced by Balaji Telefilms has gained immense popularity for the plot, impromptu acting skills by the cast and its execution. This super hit show is based on Manju Kapur's novel Custody. While the show portrays that Raman (Karan Patel) and Shagun (Anita Hassanandani) who are in an alliance of marriage, Shagun falls in love with Raman's boss Ashok (Sangraam Singh) who is a big shot businessman. Leaving behind her husband and two kids, she walks out of the house for Ashok. Meanwhile Ishita (Divyanka Tripathi) who lives right opposite to Raman are meeting accidentally. Both of them in the show get married for Ruhi's (Ruhanika Dhawan) custody.
Coming to the novel, character names in the show and the novel are similar. Much of the plot of the show is alike to that of the soap. But the major difference that can be seen is - Ishita lives in another part of the city, away from Raman. She comes from a very traditional family living in a traditional colony. According to the novel, Ishita is a divorcee and she starts finding happiness in the social work that she is doing. Eventually, seeing Raman, she starts getting attracted and drawn towards him. Besides the social message that the novel has to give out, it also shows how marriages can burden individualism.
24 tele-series on Colors -
Colors' 24 tele-series has by far been the most appreciated finite television run that marked the transformation of creating shows in India. The series has the backdrop of Mumbai with the setup of Anti - Terrorist Unit (ANU). Prominent Bollywood faces like Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Anil Kapoor, Anita Raaj and Tisca Chopra were seen in the show. Each episode covers 24 hours in real time. With each episode, unfolds the thrill in politics.
Talking about its adaptation, 24 tele-series is adapted from American television series of the same name. It has the backdrop of Los Angeles and is focusing on Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). Besides the backdrop and Terrorist Unit fighting against terrorism, there is not much of difference in the shows.
Saraswatichandra on Star Plus -
Viewers of Star Plus' Saraswatichandra have seen a typical Gujarati family, unconditional love between Saras (Gautam Rode) and Kumud (Jennifer Winget) and a lot of family drama, suspense and tragedy. Cutting it short, the show sees a happy ending with Saras and Kumud getting married facing all the hardships coming their way.
Approaching to the adaptation, the show is adapted from a Gujarati literary novel written by Govardhanram Tripathi and has the same name that of the show. The book reads out something altogether different when compared to the show. Post Guman (Monica Bedi) plotting against Saras and forcing him to leave the house, the story of the show goes haywire. There is no character like Danny (Varun Kapoor) in the book. In the show, Kumud is seen marrying Pramad (Anshul Trivedi) and post his death, she heads to the Aashram. This novel ends with Saras and Kusum (Shiny Doshi) getting married. Moreover, there is no such backdrop of Dubai. Both the families lived in Gujarat itself.
Satrangi Sasural on Zee TV -
There has hardly been any days that the show came on air and it has already gained a lot of momentum. The show is about Aarushi (Mugdha Chapekar) getting married in the house where she has to deal with seven of her mothers-in-law. It is about her journey and bonding with the each of them.
Talking about the Marathi show Honar Sun Mi Haa Gharachi from where the show has been adapted. There is no such huge difference that the viewers will witness. Satrangi Sasural shows Aarushi's father who is extremely egoistic and money minded; whereas about the Marathi show, it is the female protagonists mother who is egoistic and money minded. Another difference that the viewers will see is that Vihaan's father's past story is shown in its initial days itself. On the contrary, in the actual Marathi soap, the past story gets revealed as every facet of the story unfolds.
