Since its inception, Bollywood has been a major inspiration for the ever-changing fashion industry and the 70s really brought about a fashion evolution in the country. With our divas donning sexy and voluptuous get ups, to the men tossing their luscious locks, the 70s witnessed some stunning trendsetters who glued us to our screens. Be it Hema Malini's dreamy beauty or Zeenat Aman's sensuous depiction, the rebel gait of Amitabh Bachchan or the good boy charm of the late Rajesh Khanna, the ease and poise with which they allured the audience on-screen, it wasn't surprising that whatever they sported became an instant hit. While we reminisce all things good of the 70s, the Fashion Police presents to you fashion trends of the era that took Bollywood by a storm.
Bell bottoms
The flared, oversized bell bottoms trousers were a rage during the 70s
representing the relaxed and tranquil atmosphere of the times. Bell bottoms were
popular both amongst the men and women alike. While men opted to pair them with
suit jackets, women preferred to tuck them in with trendy and flowy tops. Be it
Zeenat Aman swaying to the beats of "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" or Amitabh
Bachchan in Trishul, bell bottoms was flaunted by one and all in the industry.
Polka dots
Can a 70s inspired look be ever complete without a polka
dotted design? A massive hit, especially amongst the women, polka dotted blouses
where a highlight of 70s fashion. Usually the deep necked or midriff
baring dotted blouses were paired with short skirts or bell bottoms. Who can
forget Dimple Kapadia donning the black and white blouse in Bobby?
Hair
An array of hairdos were a common sight in Bollywood
films during the 1970s. At times, the actresses would be seen flaunting
their long luscious
hair and the next second trimming it to a short bob cut. All thanks to
the popular use of wigs during the time. Puffed up high hair,
exaggerated buns and varied sized bangs were the most favored; often
accessorized with bright neon colored ribbons, these
wigs added glamour to the look. Our tinsel town men weren't far behind
in the race either with long sleek hair and side burns running as long
as the guns they fired.
Sunglasses
Did you think big sunglasses are a thing of today? Well, you're
mistaken then. Big glares have been in vogue since the 70s. Even today big eye
wears with designing on the rim and studded with crystals are in much demand
like they were when fashion icon Zeenat Aman effortlessly flaunted them. Be it white,
red or any other bright color, all of these were an instant hit!
Make-up
Exaggerated hippie inspired make-up was the signature look
of the 1970s. It was during this decade the theatrical cat eye reached its
zenith. Both upper and lower lash lines were heavily bordered to darken the look which
were paired with pale, nude lips and bronzed faces. The bold eye make-up
reflected the infinite power of seduction and feminism.
The reign of fashion during the 1970s saw some interesting and
eccentric experimenting with looks. While some instant hits might be a considered
the biggest fashion faux pas of the time, some did create a powerful impact on
the fashion industry. With timeless beauties of the era alluring the audience
with their charming persona, fashion of the 70s sure managed to leave a mark in the history of Bollywood.
