Chapter 2: Disquieting Turmoil

Abhira hummed under her breath while jotting down points on her yellow legal pad. She was writing notes for the case where she would be assisting her boss and he had asked her to create a concise summary of the case, note down the evidence and make a basic outline of what happened, and what would the next logical steps be. She would also have to refer to some historical cases and old judgements that can be relevant to the case and write down a plan of action. She had been working on it since the past 2 days and she needed it be done before their meeting. Contrary to expectations, when Abhira concentrated intensely, she was easily able to zone out of her surroundings and just focus on work. And today Abhira was really overloaded with work because aside from her internship, she was also participating in mock trial in college and their first competition was in two weeks. Law college was already tough but to her, being a Poddar bahu was worse! Luckily, she was married into a family of veteran and budding lawyers, so she had already done some mock trial practice at home with Armaan and the cousins and Armaan was going to edit her opening statements. "Gaah!" Abhira sputtered. As usual, her thoughts kept flitting to Armaan. 'Get it together Abhira!', she scolded herself. Life had become a whirlwind for Abhira and for Armaan following their wedding. Professional life was already relentless but personal life kept throwing curveballs after another. In the beginning, Abhira used to fantasize moving to New Delhi and working there, even with no mumma. But now, she could not sleep without talking to Armaan even through fighting. Shaking her thoughts away, Abhira took a deep breath. 'Just take one day at one time Abhira! I will figure out everthing later'. After all, there were still 7-8 months of marriage to go.

Unbeknownst to Abhira, Armaan was in the same boat. He felt an irresistible pull towards his petite wife and was impatiently waiting for the day to get over. Rohit was still in convalescence at home and was slated to join office later. Armaan knew that Rohit was physically fine, but somehow he seemed mentally off. He wasn't the same, cheerful Rohit but Armaan was hesitant in pushing him. He was polite with everyone, but he had lost his humor and had not said anything when daadi had asked him the reason for leaving. Armaan knew in the heart of his hearts, that Rohit was hurting and he was almost 100% sure that it was because he had found about him and Ruhi. He had tried to broach the topic a few days ago when both were sitting outside in the pergola:

"Rohit..I know you don't want to talk about why you left after New Years' Party but.."

"Bhai..I just left because...forget it! I wasn't thinking. I was coming back anyways right?"

"I know..but is everything okay? I mean with you and Ruhi?" Armaan asked hesitatingly.

Rohit gazed at him so intensely that Armaan felt sweat slide from the back of his neck. Did he know the truth? Oh God, does he hate me? Will maa and daadisaa know too? And what about my Abhira? He was startled by his thought. 'Since when is Abhira mine?'

And then Abhira strode angrily towards him carrying her enormous law book. "Oh Khadoosmaan! I was waiting for you for so long! You promised to teach this chapter to me!"

She seemed to realize that she has walked into a conversation and looked apologetic, her soft brown eyes widening. "Sorry! Maybe I interrupted you-" Rohit cut in-"No Bhabhi! I interrupted you two-I mean your study session actually!" he said with a hint of mischief nodding at Abhira who had instinctively grabbed Armaan's hand to drag him away. Armaan and Abhira both colored before Abhira muttered" Okay, hurry up now! Otherwise I will have to stay up late and I won't let you sleep either!" she said the last bit in her trademark bossy tone but uninhibited images of what 'they' could be doing instead of sleeping rolled in his mind. Rohit who had been so somber, suddenly giggled as if he also interpreted the double meaning and nudged him "You should go Bhaiya. I don't want to 'interrupt' my bhaiya and bhabhi and come in the middle!" he chortled, sounding like his old version. Armaan instantly felt guilt flood him- here was his innocent brother who would never be a hurdle in his path, while he had come in the middle of him and Ruhi. Armaan wanted to clear the air, he wanted to tell Rohit everything but sometimes he felt that could worsen everything. On top of this, there was the beguiling Abhira who he loved spending time with but there was still no clarity in their relationship. Then there was Ruhi. Armaan and Ruhi had maintained a safe distance from one another and their earlier friendliness had also dispersed. He needed to talk to her, he knew if only to get them both closure. He was sure Ruhi and Rohit's relationship needed this closure. But he was deathly afraid of his own relationship with Abhira. How was he supposed to tell her about Ruhi? Would she understand?

Armaan was startled by the buzzing noise on his phone. Abhira had messaged him saying that she will be coming home later, around 7-8 pm as had to practice for the mock trial competition in college. He needn't worry, she was going to get a classmate to drop her home as her classmate lived in the same area. Armaan scowled and promptly texted her to wait for him. He was going to stay extra and work anyway, there is no point in going home without Abhira. He would call home and let them know, after all he was used to be working long days in the office and family members would usually save his dinner in the fridge.

Abhira was waiting with her team in the wood-paneled officious mock trial court room. Their law professor Mr. Gupta had asked an outside lawyer who had some real court experience and was also a mock trial champion to assist them during this year. He was a family friend and had willingly volunteered and was also a star lawyer at a reputed law firm where some of the college interns work at. "Oh where?" Abhira asked interestingly. "He works at Raichand, Aggarwal and Somani Law Firm", Mr Gupta replied. "That's where I work at!" Abhira replied happily. "That's good Abhira! The field of law is highly dependent on connections, and RAS firm is one of top firms in not only Udaipur but the country! They have branches in all major cities. Arjun Somani was working at the New Delhi branch before he transferred to the Udaipur branch"

'Arjun Somani..surely not that Arjun?' Abhira wondered.

Precap for Chapter 3:

"Arjun! What are you doing here?!" Abhira sputtered in the wood-paneled mock court room.

"Armaan..I have to tell you...

"I thought you had promised me to never come to my college!"

"Promises are meant to be broken Abhira! It was not a bloody oath, and I should have never promised you that!", thundered Armaan.

"Who are you Ruhi? I don't know you at all."

Loving it thus far. Eagerly look forward to more.

But I want Armaan to work hard to make a place for himself in Abhiras life. He can't get Abhira too easily. He's hiding things without talking it out clearly with too many people so he should pay a price.
