My life has a more happening plot going on right now than what we are getting in the show. The only reason I am even keeping up with this show is cause of this forum but seems like everything is dying down here slowly too.
I still like the show enough to tune in daily if not every other day and I haven't missed any episodes either.....that itself is an achievement considering most ITV shows lose steam in trying high voltage gimmicks for the sake of drama and then don't know where to go next.
Every show plateaus after a point, no matter how good. I feel this show plateaued with Viaan's love realization and the "woh mujhse baat karti hai" poem. That was the peak of the show and everything after that has been an exercise in adding episodes to continue the show without shaking things up too much. That is what other shows on ITV do as well but they do way worse things like forced leaps, seperations etc. to build up episode count and that ruins the essence of the characters. Here, the makers are building the episode count while drawing out the getting together phase of the leads. Is it perfect? Not really. But is it preferable to shows which do forced hate/MUs/leaps/seperations to extend a story? Absolutely this is preferable to that.
This show for me right now is like comfort food in the midst of endless mindless melodrama on ITV. I don't compare this to Netflix or other web platforms because those are anyways set up differently narrative wise. I evaluate this show in comparison to other ITV shows and it still wins by a large margin there.
kekkee... this show has actually made me appreciate all the ITV madness. π€£
I sometimes wonder if people love the show because it is just absent of the typical tropes and so it feels fresh. maybe because I watch tons of different stuff, it doesn't stand out. I generally look at the writing in terms of entertainment value and it is just meh.
the original dizi had 90 episodes. each ep is usually over 90 minutes, so about 4 ITV episodes. that means, the makers had material for 360 episodes at least just based on the original material. here, the writing has plateaued so early that it feels like they are reaching. why? because they refuse to address conflict in an interesting and exciting way.
conflict is what drives dramas and when they run out, they have to invent stupid stuff like reincarnation, accidents, brain transplants and generation leaps. π
here, they actually don't need to invent anything because the conflicts and overarching themes already exist. however, instead of really making it genuine, everything is so clinically address and magically cured in an episode. why should a real hurt be resolved in just a few episodes? not only it is not realistic but it is also not entertaining to watch. we need those dhak dhak moments where two characters push and pull. we need to feel bad for the characters. we need reasons to tune in. so from a writing perspective, I would say it is only timepass - neither good nor bad. π€·

I personally can't watch 20 things simultaneously even for timepassπ. Conflict for the heck of it is not my idea of entertainment. I've watched a ton of shows over the years too and I'm personally tired of mindless gimmicks. This show for me is a breath of fresh air right now because it is steering clear of mindless gimmicks and trying in whatever little way it can to show a different narrative from the typical ITV show.
As I already said, the writing is not perfect and I've criticized the drag and disjointedness whenever I've felt it got too much.....but they always come back with a heartfelt scene or moment that validates my decision to watch the show. Most other shows on ITV have totally lost that basic HEART that is needed for a narrative.....this show still has that heart despite hiccups.
I haven't watched the original Turkish show (heck I don't have any patience for Turkish, Korean, etc. shows in general) but whatever I've read about it seems to indicate the original Turkish show had a lot of typical soapy melodramatic twists/turns....they've clearly changed the narrative for this adaptation and tried to avoid giving in to every lowest common denominator type twist. Remains to be seen how long they can hold on to it.
I get tired of Katha's lectures and Viaan's extra magnanimity from time to time too....but then I look around and see an ITV filled with pathological gaslighting, crass third angles, manipulations etc. being passed as "storytelling" and I return back to Katha....a show which still shows the office atmosphere in some capacity, which shows people WORKING rather than planning/plotting all day....I can watch daily routines of characters also if I find the characters likeable and that's more than I can say for most ITV characters right now most of which have been degraded at jet speed in desperation for short term TRP goals.
Too much of the below..
Viaan's anger
Katha's lecturing
Ehsan being over supportive.
Mr. Garewal's - beti beti and beti
Love Dodo, Kavita and Aarav.
Two more Psycho character's introduced Seema and Vanya!

so when it comes to any type of story whether it is literature or the dumbest of dumb dramas, conflict is essential part of writing and constructing a story -- it is what gives the story momentum and keeps it going. the conflict ends with the climax and then there is the resolution. thats the arc of every story regardless of the type of literature or quality of writing.
in this drama, the conflict is essentially internal -- viaan vs self and viaan vs past. when you have the potential for such rich storytelling due to the nature of conflict here, the makers have messed it up by bleaching it so that it is really mundane. rather than giving it juice and really looking at the dramatics, everything is so muted.
so instead of appreciating the drama, have actually ended up gaining an appreciation for the silly ITV dramas -- they may be dumb but they know how to write conflict and milk the audience interest for every drop. π
and then you find these dramas are exported and they have fans in places like central europe popping up and commenting on youtube MVs and you are shocked -- so these dramatics are entertaining for people regardless of where they are! π€£it works because conflict is a key part of writing and if you have conflict, then you have suspense and natural character building.
the type of writing the makers are trying to do would have worked with a mini series like 16-32 episodes. basically thats when this drama plateud for me. or maybe the B team took over.
but yes, we all have different tastes when it comes to enjoying dramas. π for me, the heart of this drama was viaan 1.0 and when they changed his character graph, I lost most of the connect and curiousity to keep watching. so for me, am now in timepass phase.

LOL I'm not sure why you got the impression that I don't understand the purpose of conflict in storytelling π.....but thank you for the enthusiastic descriptions on literature, conflicts and storytellingπ. There is after all a Katha in everyoneπ
I think it's already been established that we have very different tastes and perspective on storytelling. I will simply reiterate what I already said - I don't care for conflict for the heck of it. Conflict still exists in this story IMO, but not in a loud way. The early half of the story had a more direct and intense conflict in the form of the ONS and the baggage related to that. Now the conflict is subtle...the internal conflict still exists for Katha as she struggles with all the emotions she wants to suppress and the deep rooted denial she is battling. Viaan is on a journey of self-reflection and self-discovery as he tries to chase positivity in his life now instead of wallowing in negativity like he did his whole life. Maybe that narrative is not exciting enough for some folks but I am liking it for now.
As for the longevity of this show....lol no one can predict these things. There is no real concept of finite shows on ITV....if a show takes off, makers will try various ways to prolong its time on air. That is what Katha makers also seem to be doing for now....rest time will tell when they actually run out of juice.

I came to one conclusion that i'm the only person on the planet who has no complaints with this show and enjoying it the most to the degree i couldn't watch any other show currently even i quit watching other shows after this show ππππππ
May be because it's way better than the original. ( to which i was a bigger fan too) or it's my first ITV show so i don't have exact idea about how it should be?
Thanks alot for the tagging π
