Another slumdog millionaire situation.

They want to keep on believing india is a 3rd world country drowned in issues.

Why is focus not on Indias tremendous growth and achievements.

But of course that they won't focus on, because it doesn't fit their agenda.

And honestly Vir Das is one of the most boring and unfunny person there is.

Slumdog was a case of poverty p()rn for sure but Vir Das' talked about real issues that plague India. You could say he was being provocative , that he did it for attention , that the bit about rape might feed stereotypes about Indian men etc etc but at the end of the day what he said was true and India would only benefit from any attention brought to these things. Ignoring them and talking about other things for good PR is like ignoring gonorrhea and gloating about a facelift. It's not as if the world isnt aware of what's going on here. So if anything , an Indian man standing there and acknowledging the reality of his country is only going to make a good impression on reasonable people who don't dwell on stereotypes. The others can go to hell ,right?

What Vir did is no less than poverty p*rn. It can be called 'problem p*rn'. India has problems and the whole world knows about it. It was really not necessary to fly to the USA, stand in a Hall full of people and say, "Let me make a grocery list of what all's bad about India".

It's just not done. It only served to fuel stereotypes about India and increase the casual racism against them.

What Vir Das did was use India's problems to promote his career in the West. Nothing wrong in it per se, but in poor taste when it clearly wasn't comedy but intended as a virtue signaling rant in front of outsiders. ESPECIALLY WHEN DOING SO WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING (diff thing if it was intended to pressure a recalcitrant government). Same as Slumdog's poverty p*rn issue. The only benefit was to Vir das's career. Not to India, not to comedy.

But that doesn't change the fact India has tremendous problems.

The growth in India hasn't reached the people who need it the most. The educated middle class types who post on IF form only a small fraction of India. The rest of the population still very much lives a 3rd world life. So their *belief* happens to be reality. Pretending it's not will actually delay progress from happening because the 1st step is admitting a problem exists.

Well I'm leery of his intentions. Always found him unnecessarily preachy rather than funny ( that too after doing something like Mastizaade 🙄) and he panders a lot. But in this case it's not as if he casually ended up listing what's wrong with India on a regular day in a developing country with it's usual share of problems. We are in a very bad situation that's getting close to totalitarianism. There isn't a lot of democracy left in the world's largest democracy. The kind of hate speech that has become mainstream is just shocking . Just the other day a young doctor was 'advised' by some outfit on the 'dangers' of marrying her Muslim fiance. Not a lone case. These kind of things are on the rise. People get arrested for criticising or questioning the govt . At the moment any criticism or shaming from anywhere is only going to be good for India and for those of us who want to continue to live here.

The bit about rape was probably not in great taste in the light of stereotypes but then he also said good things about India , he was also being hopeful about things changing for the better. He talks about an India that welcomes 'others' ,he talks about Indian women who achieve much even with very little at their disposal. As for racism , people who watch his stuff aren't likely to go let this speech colour their idea of Indians any more than the other things about India have. It's a niche audience. And the average racist on the street most likely hasn't heard of Vir Das and one monologue less from a stand up comic they have no interest in would make zero difference to their racist attitudes.

Whats ironic is tht when Munawar Farooqui went to jail for a joke he didn't crack , Vir Das has said plenty of things about religion and nobody seems to have noticed..
