I found Saif Ali Khan absolutely handsome and cute during the 90s He was very energentic in dancing and charming in his acting 👍🏼

Saif had a boy-next-door charm about him in the 90s. He looked someone who I'd really love/adore in real life.

But as a Bollywood hero? He definitely looked out of place. I mean that was the generation who had grown up watching Sunny Deol & Anil Kapoor as heroes, and then had been idolizing Sunil Shetty & Akshay Kumar as their heroes,

so obviously Saif didn't fit the bill with his boyish looks.
Neither he was as vibrant & talented as SRK/Aamir, at that time.

Dil Chahta Hai changed things for him for a bit,
and then around 2003-2004, Saif finally came into his own with films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Ek Hasina Thi etc.

I agree. I have watched SAF during the 90s, he was very boyish and effeminate. I think Dil Chahata Hain changed his career.
