The adds will reflect the pages you visit. Basically i think if you clear your cookies it shouldn't be a problem.

Will clearing cookies work Vijay?

It's not related to cookies - because if it was - I would see such ads on other sites too. But no I don't and it's not me but other people who are being dished up such unsavory view-fare.

And honestly - "please clean your cache" is as trite as advising "system restart karo" - to every computer related problem. We really have moved beyond the Windows comps of the 90s you know.

Suppose a famous actor is very publicly going through a break up or emotional break down or something as such, as in it's all out in the open and it's the buzz of the town, even then we can't talk about it?

It doesn't make sense, how can you have celebrities and not gossip about them?

celebrities get half their popularity because people gossip about them, want to know about their lives etctec.

That's such a weird rule. Apologies.

i guess its ok to discuss about gossip which is out in the open and widely publicized, when IF does nothing to stop people creating gossip within IF and creating stories about celebrities, and taking such stories onto ther platforms like twitter and FB...so discussing exisiting and well publicized gossip is nothing compared with it

Most sites have filter I think.

Because adds are based on preference only. It's how google adds work.

adds based on preference do depend on cookies. Only if there's a tracking cookie can they know your preference.

But I'm a noob, what do I know? ðŸ˜† These are just somethings I heard people telling me, so I could, in  all likelihood, be wrong.

😆

No Vijay was so particular about defaming actors and discussing their personal life so I wanted to know the upper limit to it.

Thank you to Mr Vijay and the whole Dev Team for so many better and stricter rules, especially in cases of MID and harrassing members. I know a lot of people come here to express their opinons and get unwarranted abuse for doing simply that. Also, grateful for the celebrity slander bit too. Much needed, indeed.

I look forward to seeing stricter enforcement and do hope this place remains peaceful.

Once again, thanks and really appreciate all of this.

Advertisements on IF don't actually reflect your browse history. Facebook has advertising that reflects browse history, which is creepy and privacy violating. Typically, clearing cookies helps, but not if they have logged your actual browse history. And you thought only NSA was bad. 😆

Sites like IF, Blogger and many website have "keyword" driven advertisement. There are algorithms that generate ads based on the keywords in the page.

For example if I am a travel agent, I will attach key words like dream vacation, Thailand, beaches in my Ad. Suppose there is a topic discussing Thailand or beach vacations – my ad will appear on that page. Similarly, if I am some unscrupulous pimp in Thailand, I could use the same keywords for my ad, and if you visit a topic discussing Thailand or beach vacations – you may see my advertisement promoting my "escorts" in Thailand.

The web master of IF or a site that partners with an advertising service does not have control over what is advertised on their website. The advertising service and the algorithm decide the ads.

However, there are several things a webmaster can do.

-          Choose to partner with reputable Advertising services. Google Ad Sense, Bing and other online advertising vendors have very stringent scrutiny before they approve an advertisement. They will filter out anything offensive or illegal, ads or links with malware etc.

-          You can request to tailor what kind of ads your website will display

o   A children's website may designate that all their ads be "G" rated

o   A Christian website may designate that no marriage equality or birth control ads appear on their website.

o   An Indian website may request that only Indian business ads be shown

I'm not sure who IF partners with, but the advertising vendor isn't reputable in my opinion. I've seen way too many "questionable" ads like this rapist radar. I've also seen way too many unsecure ads that run malicious software or with links to scam websites. It is not just IF though. So many websites and blogs on the internet do this.

I highly recommend installing AdBlock Plus as a plugin. It is available for most browsers and will block all ads. You can use AdBlock to block images as well. I have my signature and banner turned off and block most images. So typically my browsing experience is text only. There is very few images I actually see on IF. Also make sure you have a good anti-virus and firewall installed. Run something like Malawarebytes regularly.

Precisely what I'd mentioned in my earlier post - that when you go for google ads - they ask which audience segment, demographics etc. you are targeting and then they run a series of ads based on those. For instance you would never find a Idea Cellular ad running on the Reliance Webpage - would you? Even though they are both targeting the same audience.

Fact is that IF does ZILCH in setting up these parameters, nor does it monitor or protest against ads that are offensive. Try and go to any other Tv based forum (rival site) - check the kind of ads running there.

My entire point - IF is quick to monitor those who are logging in and using the site but in itself IF is violating the same COC. If an ad - that promotes religious bigotry, calls women - "harlots", justifies Rape - is not offensive and caught by system filters does IF have the right to regulate what users are saying?

We cannot on one hand point out and say that kids as young as
12 are at times logging into the site so everyone has to be careful, but on the other hand we ourselves are promoting something that is offensive and objectionable. And the worst part - we are not ready to even acknowledge, let alone take action more than 24 hrs after such an infraction is brought to our notice.

Where are the system admins, GMs, PM, DMs or whatever conjugated alphabet series - when it comes to rules violation by IF itself?
