Chapter 5-Jaspal
"Veerji, can I please sleep in your room?"
Jaspal turned to the door to find a very lost looking Prabhjyot. He had been hoping that she'd missed the whole fiasco entirely. However, she'd overheard a conversation between bebe and parjaai and put two and two together. While she knew that their eldest brother was in trouble, she fortunately wasn't aware of his drinking spree. He could thank the heavens for the small mercies.
"Make sure you don't kick me."
"I won't promise anything."She'd settled herself right in the middle of the bed.
"Goodnight veerji."
He smiled at her and turned off the lights.
In his study,he summoned Manoj to get a run down of the current state of affairs .
Things weren't looking too rosy.Their reputation had taken a hit for the worse. All the goodwill and trust earned by his father had cushioned the impact somewhat but the fact remained that no one wished to openly associate themselves with a drunkard. The fact that the said drunkard was a known womaniser seemed to ruffle no feathers .
If they weren't careful, the Brar name would be irreversibly tarnished.Ideally a public apology from his brother to bolster up his cover story should work.Unfortunately,he suspected that his brother would be happier to muddy the waters further just to spite his father. He winced, remembering his conversation with him down in the garden.
"Jaspal,I hope you're not too upset.I had to do something ,otherwise I would have regretted it for the rest of my life."
Jaspal had rolled his eyes.
"I am glad to know that you're putting yourself first Veerji. It must be nice to live without regrets."
He hadn't been able to keep the venom from voice. His brother had just sighed.
"You won't understand now.Remember what I said when someone forces you to do something you have no interest in."
"Haven't I been doing that all my life? How does it make a difference?"
Silence
"You could have come to me.I would've protected you from the old man."
Jaspal's annoyance had known no bounds.
"You wanted me to come to you?You were the reason I had to join the business.Someone has to clean up your messes. Someone has to put up with Jassi di and her tantrums.Someone has to sit with Manveer parjaai every time one of your escapades is aired on television.Someone has to defend you lot when Daarji gets mad unreasonably because Bebe won't stand up to her husband. I am tired and sick of everything.You,daarji,bebe.I just hate everyone.
I looked up to you.You were the perfect brother.I thought you could do no wrong. Why did you do this?Did you think about parjaai? What about me?What about Prabhjyot?Do you hate us too?"
He had stormed off, leaving his brother behind, looking at him despondently.
A knock on his door brought him back to the present.
"Please come in ."
It was his daarji, looking worse for wear.He felt a pang in his heart for a moment but pushed it down ruthlessly. His anger hadn't died down yet and he had no wish to suppress it.
"Jaspal,we need to talk.I need your help to deal with this mess your brother has created. If we act quickly we can salvage everything."
His daarji wasn't wrong on that count. The situation required an emergency contingency plan and contingencies were what he excelled at.He pulled out a foldable white board and had it mounted.Marker in hand,he started scribbling down possible solutions, with that public apology right on the top.No matter how difficult it would be to get his brother on task, perhaps bebe might be able to convince him.
"Stop writing.I have already made a decision and the paper work has been prepared. They just need your signature."
For the second time that night,Jaspal wished the earth would swallow him whole.
*************************************************
One week later.......
"Congratulations little brother."
"Jassi di, my heart leaps at the sight of you."
Out of my body and into the nearest well.
Jasleen Baweja was indeed a site for sore eyes, especially when one wished to curdle milk or kill an adversary in the most pitiful way imaginable.Just listening to her talk, tended to send his tympanic membranes into a tizzy.
He had learnt to cope by imagining a cement mixer in her place every time she opened her mouth. As luck would have it, Prabhjyot had managed to worm it out of him and now, everyone knew of his secret, though they were too tactful to mention it front of her.His daarji had certainly found the comparison rather amusing.
"Shut up Jaspal. You are truly a wolf in sheep's clothing. You pretended to side with Inder veerji all these years while secretly covering his business. You are a true chameleon....."
The sounds of a cement mixer flooded his hearing and for the first time he relaxed.
The last week had been a tumultuous one.Akaal Singh Brar had all but disowned his eldest son in favour of his younger one who would lead the company following his retirement.Countless interviews, meetings, and discussions later ,he had officially been inducted into the board. To his pleasant surprise,no one had raised any objections. As he learnt later, the board had always favoured him over his older brother.
His parjaai was an entirely different matter though. She seemed to be taking the news rather well, but he still felt wary around her.The best course of action,he had decided, would be to groom Angad to become his successor and have his own children support their cousin brother.
Jassi di had already had a huge row with their parents about not being invited to join the business. The argument had devolved to name calling and threats of expulsion from the will, before he had sought to intervene.
Suddenly a rather uncomfortable feeling took hold of him.A feeling which convinced him that the dates were laughing at him.Whirling towards the stage,to his shock and horror he found his parents on stage with a huge smile on their faces. This was bad.The last time the two of them had made a joint announcement....
"We're extremely proud parents today. Our son, Jaspal has done us proud. Now that he has joined the board,we feel he is ready to take the next step in life.We hope to receive your support in this endeavour."
He slowly
"Get drunk immediately and cause a scene.Neither will you have to lead the company nor will you have to get married ."
His veerji had seemingly materialized from thin air .He had apparently forgotten their argument from the week before .
"Do you want me to break up Harminder Bajwa's marriage?I have some dirt on her .Blackmail ought to do the trick ."his di suggested.
"How do you know about Harminder Bajwa?"
"Prabhjyot told me."
"What is wrong with you people? Why can't you think normally for once? Are you sociopaths truly related to me?"
Both of them gave him the most incredulous looks they could muster.
"You could be a bit more grateful. We're trying to help you."
Jaspal didn't know what to think. His siblings who usually never got along, had suddenly united to help him.He knew he was supposed to feel touched but he wouldn't trust the two of them even with a ten foot pole.
"Jassi di,are you suggesting this out of the goodness of your heart?Or is it to sabotage me?"
Silence
"Inder veerji, are you willing to take my place on the board?"
More silence.
"I guess that settles it then.Good day ."
And he walked off yet again,in search of his parents. But before that he had a pesky little sister to take care of.
