Chapter 2-Jaspal

He finally found her hiding under the desk in their father's study. She refused to even look at him.He wondered if she knew of her punishment. She had always been too perceptive for her own good.Silently joining her,he decided to wait for her outburst. To his dismay, instead of anger,he ended up tears.Sighing ,he attempted to awkwardly comfort her.Emotions had and never would be his forte, but he couldn't leave his baby sister sniffling on the floor. He held her till the sobs stopped. They sat side by side in silence.

"Are you angry with me?"he asked her, fearing the answer.

Her silence answered his question.

He sighed.

"Had I tried defending you, both of us would have gotten into trouble."

She looked at him incredulously.

"Do you mean to say that you ratted me out to save your own skin?"

"No, that's not what I meant.Let's think practically.Daarji was hell bent on punishing you.He knew it was you.Had I tried defending you further,I would've been punished as well. And frankly speaking,it doesn't benefit us at all."

She looked unconvinced.

"My little monkey, consider the situation now. You're punished and I'm not.Which means I'm in a position to help you."

He chuckled as the realisation slowly dawned upon her.He continued,

"Remember one thing, we're a team.We need to learn to trust each other no matter what or who decides to come in between us.Got it?"

She nodded.

"So veerji, are you saying that you'll help me sneak out tonight?"

He shook his head .

"Not until you tell why you decided to dump mud on maasi's head."

She bit her lip and hesitated. Then remembering her promised reward, she decided to plow ahead.

"We'll,she was sort of insulting Inder veerji, she called him a name which I don't quite remember and said that it was a wonder his other children hadn't shown up yet.But veerji,Angad is my only nephew right? He doesn't have any siblings right?"

Jaspal was at a loss.It seemed that stories of his brother's moonlight serenades had made their way around the city.He definitely did not look forward to the ceremony that night.

Prabhjyot continued,"She also called you a fool. And that made me angry,so I decided to dump mud on her head."

He was shocked.Never had anyone defended him like this.He hugged his sister ,close to tears and resolved to protect her at all costs.

"Vaise Veerji,are you getting married?"

That effectively killed the moment.

"Why would I be getting married?"

She shrugged her shoulders and replied,

"Bebe said that you had a girlfriend you were hiding from Daarji. She told me I could have an extra jamun if I found her name."

"And why would I tell you this?"

"Because I am your favourite sister after all."

That was not something he could refute.Grudgingly,he appreciated his mother's guile and applauded her smarts.

He was torn between annoyance and love for his mother. While it was touching to know that his bebe was invested in his life, just not in the important bits, he definitely did not appreciate her attempt to bribe his sister.

"Tell her that it's Harminder Bajwa."

Bebe later called him to talk him out of it, berating his taste in women and resolved to find a girl herself after consulting his daarji.

He wondered if he hadn't jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire. The thought of his daarji getting involved was terrifying. He even considered wooing the said Harminder Bajwa but desisted once he assessed the practical difficulties associated with wooing a married woman.

As long as he didn't get married to a stickler for ethics and rules,he'd be fine.

*************************************************

The ceremony was going to be a disaster he could feel it in his bones. His daarji had taken the stage to welcome everyone. The entire family was there with the not so obvious exception of Prabhjyot. Most people tended to forget about the youngest Brar, often assuming her to be Inder veerji's illegitimate child who had to kept away from view.At this point, he wasn't sure whom he was angrier with, his brother or father.

Atleast his Manveer parjai didn't ill treat her. Though he still wasn't sure how exactly she would react if his brother actually did bring a child home.Anyhow, that was a problem for another day.He still had to figure out a way to sneak Prabhjyot into the ceremony. Unfortunately,a certain individual had taken it upon themselves to keep an eye on him throughout the evening.

He had tried throwing her of,first playing with his nephews and then taking a walk around the perimeter. His tail had stuck to him.

"Little brother, you seem rather lost in thought."

It took all his strength to not scream at her.Forcing a smile,he turned to her,

"Jassi di,do you plan to stick to me all night? Won't your husband mind?"

He felt a sickening sense of satisfaction as she reddened.Had they been younger ,she would have cuffed him then and there itself. Thankfully, the presence of the public protected him though he had no doubt he'd pay dearly for that comment later.

He turned towards the stage where his father was about to make the announcement.

A crash sounded at the entrance to the venue.

Every head turned. At that point,he desperately wished for the earth to open up and swallow him whole.

There stood his Inder veerji as drunk as a sailor.

You have beautiful writing skills. Love the sibling bond of Jaspal and Prabyot.

I didn't understand one thing Jaspal is not yet married but there's already Simran who is supposed to be Inder's illegitimate child.

So are Veer and Ekam going to be younger than Simran?

Is the word Diamond personified?

Thank you ❤️

So about Simran, she does exist in the story but won't be born till Angad is around 17 ish.Inder is a known womaniser but doesn't have any children apart from Angad. All that stuff about illegitimate children is purely speculation on the public's part. And Jaspal being Jaspal has an overactive imagination and decides to develop a contingency plan just in case.He expects the worst from his brother.

About the title, yes, diamond is personified here. However it represents something which each Brar(includes those who marry into the family) desperately needs.

For daarji, his pride is very important. The events of his youth have made him out his dreams in front of everything, including family.Ironically, this will serve as his fatal flaw as well.

For bebe,I think she craves stability the most. She is willing to avoid conflict even if it's at the cost of others' peace and happiness.

Jaspal just wants to be unconditionally loved for who he is.Since childhood, he's always been relegated to the role of a peacemaker. That along with the tumultuous relationship with his elder siblings, has turned him into a cynic who expects the worst from people and decides that it's better to be practical than idealistic.

Prabhjyot, being the youngest just wants attention and love from her parents. She's often ignored unintentionally especially when the family and business expand.Jaspal has become a father figure of sorts for her.

I won't talk about Inder,Manveer and Gurleen's diamonds for now.It will spoil their backstories.

Chapter 3-Jaspal

Jaspal badly wished to slap the living daylights out of his brother. However, his instinct for self preservation got the better of him.He immediately dispatched his public relations team to deal with the media, requesting his secretary,Manoj to come up with a plausible cover story. He trusted him to come up with an airtight story. The guests themselves seemed polite enough to ignore the scandal but he knew better. He had dinner served and had them escorted into the dining marquee.

The next item on his list was his circus of a family. To deal with them,he had to separate them.He called up his brother in law and had him take Jassi di and their son Garry home.He felt sick at the glee which simmered for a second on her face as she took in the mayhem. As unorthodox as it was to send her home during a family crisis, they didn't need her fanning the flames.

He approached his father who seemed ready to murder his eldest and bury him on the spot.Wishing to spare Angad further trauma,he sent him to find Prabhjyot. The two of them were not to come out of her room until he allowed them to.He also had dinner sent up for them.

With all the hassles sorted,he finally dove into the heart of the problem.

SLAPPP!!!

He winced in sympathy as his brother got a resounding slap from his parjaai. His daarji seemed to disapprove but he didn't say anything. His bebe seemed to agree with his parjaai though.

Jaspal himself was rather conflicted. The whole point was to de-escalate the conflict, not fan it further. To his horror, his veerji straightened and raised his hand, ready to slap her back.He immediately stepped in between them.

"Parjaai,I beg you. Please go back to your room .You seemed too stressed out and angry .You might end up doing something you'll regret.Please."

She looked at him,her face as hard as stone. He half expected a slap, but thankfully she nodded and stormed off.

"And bebe, could you please sit with Prabhjyot and Angad till we return? They must be extremely anxious and worried.Angad looked close to tears and parjaai is in no condition to console him."

His mother too nodded and left.

That left him with his father and brother ,the last people he wished to spend quality time with.

Daarji hadn't said a single word, which didn't bode well for either of them.He braced himself for the worst.

"Jaspal, please tell your brother to get out of my sight immediately.I have no desire to see that sorry face of his."

His Inder veerji simply grinned and decided to make himself comfortable on the ground.Thankfully ,they were alone with no one watching.Jaspal desperately wished to vanish.

Unfortunately he was stuck in the Brar mansion, whether he liked it or not.He looked at his brother, pleading silently, hoping against hope he'd take the hint and leave.Lady luck had deserted him again. His Daarji walked off silently, his stick clanging on the ground.

"Looks like the old man has given up."

His brother chimed. In all his life ,Jaspal had never seen his brother this happy before, not when he'd gotten selected for the hockey Nationals, not when he'd gotten married or not even when Angad had been born.

Perhaps it was the happiness borne out of desperation ,that seemed the purest of all.

He hoped he never had to know it.His veerji started to laugh, the loudest he could muster and Jaspal was too tired to stop.Once the alcohol, vanished he'd start crying. He was familiar with the drill.

He took a seat beside his brother and the two of them stared at the sky above, the stars barely visible.Inder had put one arm around him,the way he used to when they had been children.

He didn't bother going back to the stage. His daarji would deal with the mess and the guests. All he wanted was to enjoy his rare and rather ill timed moment of peace and quiet.

Chapter 4-Manveer

"You shouldn't have done that Manveer.", daarji said disappointedly. She looked up,anger and regret warring within her. For the first time in over seven years, daarji had expressed his disappointment in her.The feeling of being looked down on was rather unpleasant.

He continued, oblivious to her turmoil,

"No matter how justified you might have been ,it doesn't give you the right to raise your hand on him.Do not degrade yourself. You're a Brar bahu."

With that he left.

She put her head in her hands, utterly spent, once and for all.

She didn't even bother looking up when her husband sauntered in.Taking a deep breath, she rose and walked towards the door, having no desire to see his face.

"It's not my fault."

The words stopped her short. Her hands were in fists by her side as she fought against her rising anger. If he wanted to get a rise out of her,she wouldn't fall for his bait.Squaring her shoulders, she turned back to him.

"Really?Then whose fault is it?"

He ignored her and made his way to the decanter to refill his glass.

It was bad enough that the men in her life thought her a disappointment, she didn't need to be ignored as well.Blood boiling, she took the decanter and hurled it against the wall, the alcohol seeping through Picasso's dove of peace hanging on the wall. There were glass shards everywhere,on the floor,on the bed,in his hair. The crash seemed to bring him back to life for a second. His eyes hardened as he surveyed his ruined painting.

"I wonder what I did to deserve a shrew like you."

The words broke her.

Shrew

Hag

Witch

The words which had haunted her her whole life had finally found a home in her husband as well.

He looked aghast,as if reproaching himself, but he didn't seem inclined towards apologising either.

All her life, she had been forced to play second fiddle to a man who didn't deserve the power he had.Her father ,brother and now her husband. The only man who respected her as a person of her own was her father in law.She knew where her loyalties lay and walked out of the room. She'd send Sukhdeep over the next day to get her possessions.

Angad would never become like his father. She'd raise him to become the best version of himself. He'd be a gem of a man, worthy of his grandfather, a prince and heir to the throne. And she'd be the beacon of power behind him, standing unsupported and unfettered, a woman of her own.

Manveer, you can't be so harsh and rigid.

Manveer, you look so pretty when you smile

Manveer,I didn't think you had it in you to smile

Manveer, you'll have to become the head of the household.

Manveer, you need to support Inder.

Poor Inder, it's a pity he married her.

Poor Inder,he deserves better.

Poor Inder,I wonder what Akaal Singh Brar was thinking.

The words kept echoing in her as she stepped out of the western wing into the main mansion. She decided to apologise to Daarji for her rash actions and inform them about her change in accomodation.

*************************************************

Bebe was fast asleep when she arrived.Daarji took her out into the garden.

"Daarji,I'm sorry.I'm afraid I lost myself and reacted in the heat of the moment."

He sat silently, saying nothing for a while.

"Your anger is justified but do not let it get ahead of you.Weaponize it ,direct it towards something more productive."

"I understand daarji. And I'm also shifting to the guest bedroom in the Eastern wing."

"Jabjyot won't be happy, but I'll talk to her.Don't worry about it.And remember, as the eldest bahu , you're the face of the brar family now.Don't let us down.Do your duty as a mother. Angad's behaviour will reflect on you.Keep that in mind."

"I understand."

*************************************************

To her surprise, she found Jaspal reading Prabhjyot and Angad a bed time story. She 'd never known that her brother in law had it in him to patiently answer the silliest questions the children could come up with.

"Bua, will you please stop kicking me?"

Angad glared at his aunt as she'd give him a kick .

She simply stuck her tongue out at him and continued fidgeting with her blankets.

Giving a quiet chuckle ,Manveer walked inside.

"Jaspal,I'd like to put Angad in bed if you don't mind.He has school tomorrow and I don't want him up late.If you need is,you can find us in the eastern wing."

If he had detected anything odd about it,he didn't indicate it.

"Of course.Good night Parjaai, good night Angad."

Prabhjyot gave her nephew and sister in law a kiss each before settling herself between her blankets.

Nodding at her brother in law, she left for her room,a reluctant Angad tailing behind.

*************************************************

"Mumma, is papa alright?"

She froze at her son's innocuous question.

Despite her dress, she decided to rip the bandage off once and for all.

"Angad, your Papa is a bit sick and won't be able to join us during celebrations and work anymore. He needs to rest in his room."

He pondered that bit.

"Will he be okay?"

"I don't know puttar.But don't worry.You've got me and Daarji.We'll be there for you.

And remember, since Papa is sick, you'll have to help Daarji and become the man of the house when you grow up."

"Yes mumma."

He nodded solemnly.
