Part 2:

As soon as Sourav set foot on his home 'The Maitra Residence', Chutki, came running towards him, gesturing him to keep quiet and follow her. Sourav, already tired from his long tiring journey to Darjeeling, site inspection and return journey did accordingly. Chutki brought him to Mejda's room.

Sourav said 'Chutki, i have to freshen up. Tell quickly what it is. If its about ticket-money to go seee movies, am not giving it anymore unless you show some good grades ...' but Chutki stops him with a very serious face 'Its not that Chorda. Its just ...you know...'

Sourav stared at her, waiting for full explanation... 'Well, yes??'

Chutki blurted 'Today morning, when Chotoboudi was taking shower, boroboudi grabbed Junior and tried to go away to her mother's house in Elahabaad.' Sourav was stunned. Ever since junior was born, boroboudi aka Debi has been suffering from extreme insecurity about not being able to be a mother. Getting triggered by Alo's words that she can raise junior as her own child if Alo dies at childbirth, Debi took away the child even when Alo survived. Nobody blames Debi though, respecting her and knowing she is currently mentally unstable. But, one after one blow from her to Alo has made this house impossible to live in. Sourav dashed towards the door but Chutki stopped him 'Chorda, where are you going?' 'To get back junior of course. Alo will kill me if i dont bring her son back to her'

'Relax. Boroboudi almost boarded the train but couldnt.' Mejdas fine-tuned voice filled the room suddenly. 'So junior is with Alo now?' said Sourav. 'Yes. Alo, noticing Junior is gone and so is boroboudi immediately called Ujjaini as her chamber is close to the rail-station. Ujjaini dashed and stopped Boroboudi and handed over Junior to Alo midway' Mejda said meekly, it is hard for him to confess the good side of Ujjaini, ego has always stood between these two.

Sourav now saw the dilemma. In her mental illness, Debi has started seeing Alo as her rival in the house, her jealousy towards Alo for having children is increasing everyday. hailed from a rich, aristrocat family with proper cast and creed, Debi is not exactly easy to deal with. And now she had to be shown the way by Ujjaini too, the self-reliant girl Debi always hated. No wonder, her enmity will shot through the roofs now.

'Boroboudi must be furious and uncontrollable now'

'She is out of her senses. She said
Alo insulted her by calling an outsider to take away her son etc .

'What did Alo do then?' 'Chotoboudi said Junior is her son only and Ujjaini is not an outsider.' chutki glanced sideways to Mejda, who kept his silence.

"Coming home, boroboudi locked herself in her room saying she wont touch food unless someone pays for insulting her. Borda tried to reason in vein and then went out'. Chutki replied

Sourav sighed and lifted himself. Time to talk to Alo.

Thier room, located at the far end of the second storey of the house, was dark now. Probably junior is sleeping thats why Alo haven't switched on the lights. Sourav entered and found her standing by the window-side, looking absent-minded. Junior was sleeping on his cot. Alo felt him being in the room but didnt turn her head to see or greet him. Only her lips quivered and then said 'your trouser and t-shirt is at the washroom hanger. Get changed. I will warm up your snacks and make coffee once you come out.'

Sourav felt some sort of muffled cry stuck at his throat. Alo said the words pretty gently and lovingly but still they do not sound as close as they used to be. Lately, after Alo find out his attempts to do DNA-testing of junior, her behavior towards him, unlike other times of misunderstanding, has been distant. She doesnt scream, doesnt show her anger, doesnt mingle. These days, she is as cold as ice, as hard as rock and yet as true as the sunlight bathing the earth everyday.

'She needs time and space to be normal again. So do I.' Thought Sourav while going towards the washroom. Then he looked back and said 'Err...Alo, about the dilemma with boroboudi about Junior, I was thinking..'

before he could finish, Alo snapped at him with her stone-cold voice 'Its not my fault that I haven't died.' and then stormed out of the room.

Sourav stared at her with nothing left to do except scolding himself for such poor timing!

Part 3:

Sourav came downstairs after changing and headed straight to the dining table where Alo was pouring coffee for him. Snacks were already laid on the table - some chicken pakora, fish fingers and papaw halwa. Alo silently pushed the plate towards him and he picked one pakora, which was instantly snatched away by mejda

'OI, learn some manners kiddo. The first testing should be done by elders, dont you know' Mejda said with fake sincerity while biting on to the pakora 'and I, being your senior brother, reserve the rights to this delicious offerings'

'Mejda, there are lots more pakoras on the plate for you to taste and you had to take the one i picked!! thats daylight robbery' Sourav teased back sensing Mejda is actually trying to cheer up Alo by this

'Why? did you spit on that one too? Doesnt matter even if you did, its gone to my stomach..ummm delicious, Alo, you are a magic cook'

'Maybe Alo can open a restaurant where we will sell great snacks and main items made by fish and other sea-foods, fresh from father's hatchery to Alo's restaurant...what say Sourav, isnt that a good idea.' Indu chirped in

Before Sourav could answer, Alo finally said coldly 'Sis, I dont think your brother will be able to tolerate other people eating my cooking' Sourav was taken aback, just like everyone else. He could feel hot steams blowing out of his ears knowing preciously that Alo just pointed out how much of a disbeliever, jealous freak he has been. Alo kept on tiding the dining table silently as before leaving others at a loss. Mejda cleared his throat and tried to say 'Err...Alo, come on now... about time you move back to a normal relationship' but before he could finish Sourish's elated voice filled their ear

'Debi...Debiii...come one, love where are you...come out, come out, I have a very good news.' and then noticing the crowd at dining table, Soursih advanced 'hey you all. Why are you standing all standing like clowns. Aooohhh, Alo's pakoras...ummm, my goodness, looks so good.yum' he picked one and was about to bite when...

'What is it?' Debi said, standing on the other end of the long hallway. Her saari quite disarranged, her face held a scary calmness, like the grey silent sky waiting to be torn apart by a gigantic storm. If anyone looked at her closely, they could see her shaking very slowly, nervously wrapping and unwrapping her both palms.

'Ahh...Debi , there you are. You know I have a surprise just for you. Guess what? huhu? ' Sourish made funny faces at her, wishing she would respond normally. But Debi just looked on so he cleared his throat, took out something like a brochure out of his pockets and read out loud ' Resort La Panoroma. where your romantic dream awaits you!' he danced her eyeballs and said further 'Debi, I have booked a seaside cottage for us two there. Hasnt been easy, my goodness, all the honeymooners are crowding there this winter. But, I managed. A gorgeous 10 days tour just you and me. Come on baby, lets pack up' he smiled big

Debi looked disbeleivingly at him for few moments and then started laughing. At first, everyone thought she is happy but there was something wrong. Debi's laughter, it didnt stop. She kept laughing, louder and louder until the sound became a maddening shrill. 'Somebody please get her out of this, slap her if necessary, but make her stop' Alo kept muttering to herself. Other times, she herself would run to pacify Debi but now she knows, her presence will only worsen the situation.

'Oh, you are bringing honeymoon tickets for me! You miserable pathetic man. Where were all these love when everyday you would come back drunk? When I would lie awake with you being with that wretched Champa? Where were you when your mother dragged me to every type of real and fake saints to feed me holy banana, holy water and this and that to make me pregnant? You cat even tell your own drawbacks, not even when neighbors keep teasing Me about being impotent and you bring 'romantic gateways' for me!!!'

'Debi, please try to understand.' Soursih pleaded 'I know I have wronged you countless times but please listen to me. We can be happy by ourselves'

'No. We cant. Its late. You get that? Its late. Its 12 years too late. 12 years too late to go to a doctor, to get a baby, to be happy. TOO LATE'

'Boroboudi, lets drop this. I think you should lie down for a while, all these is putting a toll on you'
Indu says in a desperete attempt to divert the situation but Debi wont listen

'Nooo' She shouted 'I know why you are doing all this. You want me out of the way, out of this house. I did everything for you, years after years. Ditching ym morning sleep to make you people breakfast, ditched my education, my hobbies everything and now you all feel ashamed of me! Now I can be thrown away because ... ' Debi finally noticed Alo, standing by the dining table with a long, grave face. Seeing her Debi advanced towards her and continued 'because this girl, this uneducated, uncultured, lower caste girl can give birth to the heir of Maitra family...I could too, if only you could...hahahhahaah' she broke out in another mad laughter.

Alo, breathless and pale, only kept praying that sourish will do something hard, like the time when Sourav slapped Alo to pull her out of constant wish about committing suicide after the way Angshuman ditched and insulted her. That slap, it helped. But, instead Sourish dropped himself to the nearest coutch, trying to hide his face. Debis laughter went on and Sourav, Sougoto and Indu were trying hard to calm her in vein.

'Elder daughter-in-law' nobody noticed when Surendra entered the room and for how long he was there and Surendra disregarded their startled faces Coming close to Debi, he placed his hand on her head and said 'Go to your room and freshen up. I will get things right, i promise. Now go'

Debi, so accustomed to being Surendr'a obedient child, instinctively stopped her cynical outbreak and silently left the room. Surendra told everyone else to leave too. Sourav was the last one to start leaving Surendra called him back

'Son. come to my room after dinner. We have matters to discuss'

Part 4:

After dinner, Sourav was sitting at Surendra's room. The two have talked and now in silence, are thinking what the impact of their decision would be. Finally Surendra spoke up

'Do you think Alo will be hurt?'
'Father, at current condition she might agree to this but' sourav stayed confused and ashamed 'i think it will be better if you tell her instead of me'
'You havent yet succeeded winning her trust back, have you?' Surendra grunted 'always making up trouble for yourself, you are' then he called Chutki to beacon Alo to them.

Alo was at her room, leaning against the headrest of the bed after tiring day of handling junior. Icche came and asked 'mom, are you feeling back-pain? Should I message' Alo smiled at her 'No need dearest, your saying the words took away half of my pain'
'then i should message you to take away the other half of pain' Icche said

Alo laughed this time. First, she couldnt believe her own ears. After how many days, hours , minutes and seconds she finds herself laughing. She cuddled Icche with her both arms 'My sweet little pie. You have really learned to talk like a parakeet eh? No need to message my back, am all fine. Lets get to sleep like your brother there. I will sing a lullaby for you'

'Wont babai sleep with us here?' Icche inquired about Sourav making Alo stop momentarily from adjusting the pillow
'Babai is busy at your granda's room. He will sleep when he is back and maybe in the couth because the bed is crowded'
'But its hard to sleep on the sofa'
'Fathers are supposed to do the hard thing for their children, Icche. Your babai will be all right , dont worry'

as they were preparing to lie down, Chutki came in and told Alo that Surendra is calling her. Alo felt a little nervous, why should her father-in-law call her at this hour? Has another problem arose? She felt exhausted of the constant stress on nerves she feels on this house. Anyways, she gathered herself up, neatly arranged her sari, Covered her head, told Icche to sleep and started for Surendra's room

Entering Surendra's room, she saw Sourav standing at the rear end of the room and Surendra leaning in the easy-chair with his eyes closed. Alo slowly sat beside his foot and spoke
'Father, you called me?'
Surendra opened his eyes and saw her, passionately he stroke her head and said 'Yes dear, I have a very important request to make to you'
'You should order me then request father' Alo replied with same care

Surendra smiled affectionately, true, this daughter-in-law of his has proved to be more of a daughter than even his real daughters. Slowly he told her that, since Debi is not in a sound mental state and is proving herself to be dangerous for both Alo and Junior, he thinks its better if Sourav, Alo along with thier children goes to another place to live peacefully. Since Sourav just landed a job in Darjeeling, maybe they should settle there. Alo stared at him, surprised

'It will refresh your mind and soul and also help to erase some bitter memories' Surendra added hastily
'Father, you really are allowing us to go away, from you all'
'dearest, I consider you as my laxmi, my good luck charm. If I could give you and our grandson security and happiness here i would never imagine to ask you to settle elsewhere. But, even at my home, I cant do that situation being what it is. Please dont for a moment think I am asking you to go out. I only think its best for you, Sourov and your kids. And also, I will feel much less stressed that our grandson is not being a subject of dwell between you and Debi'

Alo silently faced down and thought for some moment 'Father, once again you proved that you have always given me justice and kindness. And i am grateful for that. I will surely do as you suggest, but only on one condition'

Sourav span towards her, only Alo can have the audacity of putting conditions before anyone, even Surendra!
'Speak it out' surendra stared

'While I am away, you all will ensure proper treatment for didibhai. Whatever she is now, thats not her real self. She is, with her virtues and vices, a good human being and we cant let that be lost in oblivion. Also, I dont want to keep your grandchildren away from this house for long. So, even for our sake, the house should come back to being the happy family it once was' Alo finished

In awe, Sourav and Surendra stared at her although inside they expected nothing less from Alo. Even at the darkest hours, she makes herself shine like a diamond in dark, coal mine.

'I promise to do as you say' Surendra vowed and send them both to thier room. Sourav, although keeping a pokar face in front of Alo, was bursting with happiness. He never imagined father to be so considerate. Seems like his finding out that bungalow close to his office site at Darjeeling will now really come to some use, that bungalow will now be their home.

4 days later, in the early morning, Bongshi was uploading the suitcases on Sourav's car. Alo carefully lowered herself and placed junior at a prom inside the car. Icche was already in the car with Sougoto and Orko - who was consoling her. Sourav and Alo took last blessings from the family - Surendra, Indira, Indrani, Jayanta and Soursih. Chutki was going with them, to help Alo and also to study in a college there, so she was busy taking farewell from Satyaki who ensured her that he will go to visit her often.

Before stepping on the car, Alo looked back once more, not sue what she wanted to see. Either her eyes were looking at a teary eyed Indira or to a calm and sensible surendra or maybe she expected the image of Debi-with her slanted eyes, her long hairs and thin, tight lips waving goodbye to her. But, Debi wasnt there, she didnt come.

Alo sighed and got inside knowing Debi wont come. However, unknown to her, up from the rooftop a pair of slanted eyes were indeed looking at their black car, leaving the big iron gate of the house.
