"I'm not going mum."
"He's your grandfather and he's not doing well. Holding all this venom within your heart will continue to poison your life sweety."
"I can never forgive those people for what they did to us..to you maa!" She replied incredulously, her body stiff as she stared at her mother.
"I don't want to force you beta," Astha replied, placing a hand on her daughter's shoulder, "I just want you to move on from the memories of the past and make peace..if not for anyone else, just for yourself."
"That's what I'm trying to do mum but every time I hear of them or see them my blood begins to boil. I will only be able to move on if I'm completely detached from them," Swati replied.
"You're old enough to make your own decisions now," she replied turning away and walking towards the lounge.
Knock knock knock knock knock... The knocking continued as Astha rushed toward the front door yelling, " I'm coming..hold on!"
As she opened the door Swati had come to stand behind her, curious as to who might be knocking on the door at this hour. The sight that greeted her made her let out a loud gasp, her eyes threatening to fall out of their sockets. It had been years since she'd come face to face with him.
They both continued to stare at each other until Swati broke the silence, "What are you doing here?" She snarled, anger apparent in her voice.
He snapped her eyes towards her and back at Astha, "These are the values you've taught her..this is how she speaks to her elders?!" He snapped at Astha.
"How dare you?!" Swati shouted back, striding towards the door, coming to a halt in front of her mother. She had taken after her father in terms of physique, towering in front of Astha and acting as her shield. "How dare you come to my home and insult my mother?!" She screamed teaching for the door to close it. However he was still strong and healthy, placing an arm up against the door he stopped it midway and walked into the lounge room. " I will not leave before I have done what I'm here for," he replied, a little taken aback by his daughter's attitude.
"What do you want now Shlok?" Astha sighed, she new arguing with him was not going to get him out of here any quicker.
"I'm here to pick up Swati, she has to go visit Baba."
" I don't HAVE to do anything!"
"Your anger, stubbornness and arrogance remind me of myself Swati. I guess you are after all my daughter," he said cooly.
"Biologically I am, so am bound to have some of your qualities but one does not become a father by donating some sperm!" she spat back at him, "But what would you know about being a father, you're a selfish human being who would even use god to get his own way. This here, she said pointing towards Astha, is my mother and father.
"Shlok, I've already asked her if she wants to go to the hospital to visit your father, she doesn't. You've said what you came to say, please leave." Astha stepped in, hoping to end this confrontation before the situation got out of hand.
"You know I would do anything for my father Astha!" Seething with anger, at Swati's outburst.
"And I would do anything for my daughter..MY daughter, how dare you threaten to take her without her will! Now get out of my house!" She shouted, shaking with anger.
"I have come this far in my life following whatever my father has asked of me! How can you expect me not to grant his last few wishes?!"
Looking at the faces of the two ladies a sadness overcame his face. "How did we get to this?" he muttered under his breath, turning to leave just as the door came slamming behind him.
