Arshi, an eyeopening post on Anjali... How well you understand and state her true character!!!

When I started reading the post ... I thought it was ASR that was saying this, so I sort of felt he would never pit his Khushi against his beloved Di. It is to ASR'S credit that he is such a loving brother... Not that Anjali does not love him... She does ... She has grown up being cloistered by her family because of her handicap...

I had seen an interview of Daljit where she said that Anjali is such a pure, good character. I sort of did not agree...Initially, her character was portrayed as a delicate, weak, totally dependent, door mat wrapped in genuine sweets smiles, pooja thallis, and a single minded, doting affection for her brother, husband and rest of the family.

Right in the beginning there are some scenes that hint at her underlying manipulates nature... How she, without an iota of guilt, forces Khushi to work at RM because of the contract. Even when the morally bankrupt Shayam tell her ... " Yeh toh sara sar khudhgarzi hai". She ignore him ... Coz in her mind her ends justify the means... Then immediately afterwards, on Janamashtmi, she brushes Khushi's humiliation aside after the police leave with a " Aab tho Saab teek ho gaya hai... Saab Pooja kay liya chelleyay" How absolutely insensitive and heartless...from a supposedly religious God fearing person... do no harm sort of person. ASR, for all his disdain for religion, was far more of an morally upright human being.

I have no doubt, if I were to meet Anjali and force her to see her negative side, revealed later in the show, she would be the one who would be most shocked coz she doesn't mean to be like this... She does have the very best intentions for everyone including the Gupta sisters. In her defense, (although I doubt she would try to defend herself... as she is a passive aggressive) she would claim that she is the one who is the affectionate, accommodating, eager to please everyone... that her goal in life is the happiness of her brother and husband... All very true... Her real serious character flaws are revealed much later in the show... Her worst crimes are against her own brother who she claims is one of the pillars of her existence... She is delusional, manipulative, cheating, lying, conniving, shockingly self absorbed (Lightning quick recovery after miscarriage). Not once asking her brother...You were kidnapped??? Were about to die??? How??? Who??? Why???
I seriously think that the later real serious infractions were more a case of butchering her character to suite the plot than her true nature.

I wanted to do a comparison of anji and Khushi and took it from the perspective of us talking to Dadi.

I always had problems with Anjali's character, she always came across as self centered, and insecure, she was also the true rani sahiba, ruled the Raizada mansion, iron hand in a velvet glove kind of!

She was manipulative as you have pointed, kept Shyam on leash, and later showed her self absorption streak!

Whether she was a complex character or not, whether she was poorly written, or daljeet just failed to rise to the script and left us all confused, not sure.

But yes, after kidnap track it was very difficult to sympathize with her, she came across as very self centered.

Arshi,
I just realized that this post was originally made when the Dadi fiasco was playing out... Want heartburn I Got!!!! But nothing compared to what followed soon after... (Sheetal and finally, Barun leaving drama) you know, in hind sight I actually love the Dadi track now... Coz this is where we got some of the most romantic scene... Anyway, not discussing that prematurely ...

I saw how you laid out the difference between Khushi and Anjali...but I was so focused on the negative...that I too let Khushi's goodness go-unacknowledged... how ironic... Did not mean to do that... just kept ranting about Anjali...I think I have said enough mean things about her...Khushi is appealing because she has a universal appeal... We all see parts of ourselves in her... Or would like to be more like her...The thing that drew me to Khushi the most ... other than the hazar things appealing about her, was that she was so confident about herself in the beginning... In ASR's office... By confidence I mean belief in herself... Think about this ... In our country, value judgments are made in a split second about the way you speak... What language you speak how you speak it...how you dress... You are immediately pigeon holed, as she was...as a Behenji...and Khushi, amongst a crowed of "it gals" and followers...stood tall and was not intimidated at all. Not once thinking about conformity... And toeing the line...I loved that!!! Remember how she said " Jai Devi Maiya ki!!" at her introduction... I don' think I'd have the courage to do something like that...

Actually to think about it, value judgements are made the other way around too... The shorter the skirt ... the meaner you are ... The more questionable your value system...

I thinks Arshi, I will shut up now as I am way off topic!!! 😛

But you make a valid point! La judged Khushi, and CVs made La bitchy while she wore skirts, and when she turned nice, she wore ethnic.

So what you just said, bothers me too!

And Khushi's confidence and the way she took on the whole fashion house without in anyway feeling inferior to anyone was gutsy

@Ipoona & @Arshicritic

I am commenting after almost a month's gap. Liked this discussion. Nice post arshicritic.

Anjali never thought bad for others. She is selfish & self-centered. She was always dependent (needs everyone) & needs support.

Khushi always thinks good for others. She is selfless. She was always independent (can sacrifice everyone for others' happiness) & gives support to others.

IPK is just the best... We can keep discussing the different layers of each & every character. They have so many shades...

Welcome back dear. And true, the show had depth and multiple interpretations. I am yet to find another show that has the same range and quality
