One question to you: do you believe, that if they had a wider timeschedule and if they had dealt it artistically rather than commercial, they could nave upheld the original quality and could have proceeded with the characters intact? Was there enough story for a prolonged period in the original storyline?
In other words: is it necessary to to introduce the crap? Are there examples of prolonged programs that upheld quality?
To my mind comes Astitva, as such an example. But I am not sure that Astitva was a commercial success.

Asitva was a commercial sucess, but at the same time, the story-line meandered senselessly after a year or so! But atleast, the characters were realistic!
The basic story line and format of KS was a very good one, but definitely not one that can be prolonged for over a long time. KS is basically a Love Story and a Love Story can only be streched upto a limit...It was the story of two disparate individuals thrown together because of circumstances and how they fight their destinies to reconcile and discover love in one another...A beautiful and heart-warming concept, if not an entirely original one!
No, it is not necessary to introduce crap...Quality can always be maintained along with all the stuff that is necessary for popularity of a serial! But Ekta Kapoor follows certain set of rules which she thinks are a must for the success of all her serials and hence, we see, that every serial, goes down the pits after say, a run of 6 months or so!
KS that way has been one of her better ventures...It followed a wonderful story line along with some gripping performances for almost 8 months or so...But now what they are dishing out is much more than crap and one finds it hard to decipher, whether you are watching a serious drama or a cheap, third rate comedy!
The best serials ever shown on Indian Television were the ones they used to air on Doordarshan...The Production Values were extremely shoddy and downmarket, but the content was A-rate! Take any serial from Hum Log (The First Indian Soap) to Khandaan (A Take on the Bold and the Beautiful, Indian Style) or to the recent ones like Farmaan, Kashish, Kashmakash, Tanhayiaan....and so many more....They are soaps and serials, we remember till date, almost 10-20 years after they were aired! Buniyaad, one of Indian Television's most popular shows, was aired once again recently and even though it seemed like it was from a different era, the appeal was timeless!
KS is just one of the those serials which remains etched in our minds till they are on-air, I can bet my last penny, that the moment it goes off-air, no one will remember, either KS, or Jai Walia or for that matter any other thing associated with this Soap!
My Two Cents...
