Presenting my first collaboration with my sweetheart, Tia.
Arnav brought the car to a screeching stop. He grabbed his steering wheel and closed his eyes. He opened his eyes as he felt a palm squeeze his hand. He turned around to look at his smiling Di. She touched his cheek with a wide grin on her face.
Flashback. "Di, fine. We will have the wedding, just like you wanted it."
Anjali picked up the bowl full of mehndi cones from her lap and started opening the car door.
"Di, stop." Arnav screamed. He got out of the car and ran to the passenger side. He took the bowl from her and helped her out of the car. They walked slowly to the front door. Arnav was about to knock, when he realized the door was ajar. He raised his eyebrows; he could hear screaming.
"Arre Sanka Devi, what are you doing? What happened? At least tell us what is wrong?" Arnav opened the door to see Buaji, standing with her hand on her head and luggage at her feet. Buaji heard the door open and turned to see Arnav and Anjali.
"Arnav bitwa, look, this girl has gone crazy. She has been packing since morning".
Arnav and Anjali raised their eyebrows shocked. Arnav turned around to see Khushi dragging a suitcase to the living room.
"Buaji, help me." She said, her back to everyone, trying to drag the suitcase with all her might. Arnav ran to her to help and grabbed the suitcase. She looked up and let go of the suitcase. She turned around to walk away, but Arnav grabbed her wrist. She turned around to face him, but looked away. He looked at Buaji and Anjali and turned back to Khushi.
Arnav asked softly, "Khushi where are you going? Why did you not pick up my calls last night?" Khushi remained quiet, still looking elsewhere.
He continued, in a soft voice. "Are you angry because of what I said last night?" Silence. He touched her chin and moved her face to face his; she looked down. He raised his eyebrows.
His voice was loud. "Khushi, why are you not wearing sindoor?" Silence.
His voice became louder. "and the mangalsutra, where is it?" Silence.
He screamed. "Khushi I am talking to you." Silence.
Arnav grabbed her arms and pulled her close.
"Khushi, how many times have I told you not to ignore me when I am talking to you? Huh, how many times?"
Buaji and Garima opened their eyes wide.
Khushi, with an annoyed face, looked at him. "What do you want to know? Why I am not wearing my sindoor and my mangalsutra?" Arnav glared at her. She paused and exhaled deeply. She said, her face still annoyed. "Because I am not married to you."
Arnav said through clenched teeth. "Is it about the rituals again? I agreed to do all of it right, just like you wanted."
Khushi raised her eyebrows. "Just like I wanted?" She pushed him away. "Just like I wanted?" Arnav looked confused.
"You wanted the shagun. You got that. You wanted the roka. You got that. You wanted the mehndi. You got that. Now what else do you want? You want the wedding, right. Fine, you will get that too."
Khushi scoffed. "I can't accept your tip, sir. You can keep your wedding." Arnav had a horrified look on his face.
The horror quickly changed to anger. "What does that mean?" He took a step towards her, his face fuming. She didn't move.
"It means I don't want to get married."
"What?"
"What what?" Khushi asked, her eyebrows raised, a faint mocking smile on her face. "You considered me your enemy last night. You said you lost your trust in me. What changed today?"
Arnav exhaled deeply. "Di convinced me that.."
Khushi replied, sarcastically. "And here I thought I was marrying you."
Arnav's face was fuming with anger. "Enough! Enough of this! Fine, we wont have any rituals. We don't need any. We are already married, dammit."
Khushi retorted, "In what way? Not by rituals, no. Not by love, because love is based on trust." She paused, "oh and wait, not even by law," she said, with a scornful laugh, "because the contract ended last night."
Arnav opened his eyes wide and opened his mouth to say something when he heard Akash's voice. "Bhai, what contract?" Khushi and Arnav turned around to see Akash, Payal, Nani and NK standing at the door behind Garima, Buaji and Anjali.
"Akash, I.." Arnav started saying.
"I will tell you, Jijaji". Khushi interrupted him. "Your brother forced me to marry him for six months. He threatened to stop your wedding if I didn't agree." Arnav raised his eyebrows and looked at her. She glared at him.
"Bitiya.." "Sanka Devi.." "Khushi.." "Khushiji.." "Bhai..". Everyone started talking together in the meantime.
Arnav grabbed her arm, angrily. "Fine. If we are not married, then let's get married again".
Khushi pushed him away and he grabbed her, this time both her arms and screamed. "Khushi, is it that easy for you to let go of everything that we have been through together?"
"Yes. I stayed up all night thinking and I realized," she shrugged her shoulders. "I realized that I can't keep trying to fight for a love that was never there. Why fight, when I could never depend on the one I love to stand by me when I need him". He released her arms, shocked.
Everyone stopped talking as Khushi asked, angrily. "So you asked me if it was easy for me to let go of everything? You tell me, Mr. Raizada, what about this marriage should I hold onto?" She was fuming with anger now. "I was suffering insults from everyone. I was called a gold digger and I was even called a woman who would sell herself for money. My family was insulted, my upbringing questioned and still, the person who should have revealed the entire truth and protected my dignity kept his silence and saved his own skin. So tell me, Mr. Raizada, what about this marriage should I hold onto?"
Arnav glared at her.
Khushi's eyes filled with tears. "And yet, I did. I held onto the dream that I had, of a life with you. I held onto that dream, blindly, hoping that one day, that one day you would love me, trust me and understand me". A tear rolled down her cheek. "You shattered my dreams when you forced me to marry you. I suffered quietly... for you. You made me sleep outside in the cold nights for weeks. I said nothing and I obliged.. for you. You insulted me day and night, I didn't mind, because it was you.. I would have done anything for you.. suffered everything for you, because I still had hope". Tears started flowing down her cheeks. "You accused me of having an affair with your brother-in-law." Buaji, Garima and Payal opened their eyes wide. "I yelled, I begged, I did everything I could, to try to prove myself innocent. You walked away. I still didn't give up. I waited for you to come back. I still had hope. Then I realized you were kidnapped." Buaji and Garima gasped. "I couldn't give up then. No, I couldn't. I risked my life to find you, because I knew one day, if I kept trying, you will learn to trust me. And the other day, when you shared your heart with me, like a fool, I believed that you trusted me". A tear rolled down her cheek. Then her face was clouded with anger. "But yesterday... yesterday you told me that you lost your trust in me because I brought home the man you hated. The man you hated? I hate him more than you ever will. But still for you... for you, I overlooked my hatred towards him, because nothing mattered to me more than you.. your happiness". Her face softened and a tear rolled down again. Then anger replaced the pain, as she screamed. "If.. if I hadn't overlooked my hatred towards him when you were kidnapped, you would not be standing in front of us today, Mr. Raizada". She screamed through clenched teeth. "I have so much hatred for that man, so much hatred, more than I have ever had for anyone in this world. Shyamji cheated my family, insulted me and my entire family in front of everyone, including you.. and still, for you, I.."
"Stop it, Khushiji." Arnav and Khushi turned around, as Anjali screamed. "Not even one word against my husband. Haven't you insulted him enough? It is all your fault. It is because of you that Chotte also misunderstood my Shyamji. What has he done to you Khushiji? Why are you lying to all of us? Why?"
Buaji started saying in anger, "You want to hear what.." but she stopped as Khushi screamed.
"I am lying? Me?" Khushi paused. Silence. She raised her eyebrows and asked, calmly. "How about you, Di? Have you not been lying and pretending to starve? Didn't you play with the emotions of your family while your husband was visiting you and feeding you? And you.." she said derisively, "you accuse me of lying?"
Arnav screamed and took a few steps towards her, angrily. "Khushi, not even one more word against my Di".
"Oh", Khushi turned to him, surprised. "So you trust her". She shook her head and her eyes filled up with tears again. "I gave up everything for you. I even went and begged in front of the man who I detest more than anything just so that your Di will be happy, knowing that if your Di is happy, you will be happy too". She said sarcastically, with a mocking smirk on her face, "And you know why I did that. Because I thought you understood me, that you trusted me. But no, I was wrong". She let out a scornful laugh. "But your Di.. she did not even think about your feelings when she was lying to you and meeting her husband behind your back and when she was pretending to shower her love on you just to stop you from finding her husband who was hiding in her room.."
"Khushi.." Arnav raised his hand up, screaming. Khushi closed her eyes tight.
Part 2 below.
PS : Yes, it is the same me who always defended Arnav. But I don't blame Arnav. The hurt, disappointed and angry fan in me blames the inconsistency and the loopholes in the script!
