Under The Stars
Arnav entered his room after a long day at work and was surprised to find it unusually quite. He assumed that Khushi must be busy with her endless chatter with someone and decided to take a shower in the meantime.
Later he called out to Khushi, wanting to see her after such a tiring day. Not getting a reply worried him. Usually she always waited for him to return home and then she would just talk endlessly about how her day went and the odd silence today startled Arnav.
He went downstairs to find the house empty and then returned to the pool side to look for her. That's when he saw her, she sat with her back to a wall, her knees pulled up to her chest and her eyes closed like in silent prayer.
He walked up to her and sat down silently, he cleared his throat trying to get her attention. She just remained quite, he pushed back a stray lock of her hair teasing her face. That's when she opened her eyes and he saw that they were moist and filled with soft sadness. She smiled up at him and tried to get up saying 'When did you come?'
He pulled her back down and made her sit on his lap, he hugged her close and asked, 'What's wrong, Khushi?'. She just sat there with her head buried in his chest, refusing to talk.
In silence she drew warmth and comfort from him, wanting to do nothing but forget after all these years. She quietly weeped, spilling her sorrow, trying to relieve herself.
Arnav felt tears trickling down his shirt and he saw he crying quietly, he made her look at him and cupped her face, asking her to let it out.
She spoke in a broken sad voice, 'Today was the day I lost my parent's', she gathered herself together trying to not break down. 'They just left and never returned, after all these years I expected the sorrow to disappear, to wear away and look here I am crying like I do every year' she said with a heart wrenching sorrowful smile.
Arnav hugged her closer, whispering sweet nothings into her hair, trying to draw away all the pain. He looked into her eyes and whispered 'You know what Khushi, you reminded me when I was broken that my Mom is looking down at me from above, you made me believe that she is still somewhere there watching out for me and now I realize that she was all along, or how would I ever have found you, it all seems so miraculous'.
He looked up at the sky pointing to the three brightest stars gazing down upon them, he smiled at her and said 'They are still there Khushi, lovingly gazing down, knowing you are fine'. She looked up at the sky, knowing he was right, she closed her eyes and thanked them for making her find him, find love. Under the starry night sky she realized that it was all destined, meant to be.
Drawing her close he lowered his head and softly kissed away all the tears, pain and sorrow, promising to always hold her close.
