He was typing away mercilessly on his laptop, his thoughts whirring at lightning speed, his fingers noting down everything coming in to his head. He very rarely had these moments of crystal clear thought these days. He was usually interrupted by his hapless employees who were worse than school children or his wife bringing him his lunch box, sending him in to a tizzy because he felt like he was back in school.
He was just about to type in the final details, the ones that were the crux of the contract when there was a hurried knock on his cabin door and with a flurry of colour and tinkling of bells and jangling of pom poms his wife rushed in to the room and placed his lunch box on his desk. This time however she didn't leave in the same way she came like she usually did but placed a white envelope on top of his box and waited expectantly, clasping her hands in front of her.
He looked hard at his screen, trying to ignore her, trying to bring his important ideas from three seconds ago back to the fore but it was useless now. The information was completely lost. He raised his eyes to see her smiling broadly as she always did as if life was some funny joke to be laughed at and enjoyed, setting his teeth on edge.
"What?" he asked in exasperated tones.
She wiggled her eyebrows at the envelope lying atop his box and he snatched it up with impatient fingers and tore it open. He glanced at the contents disinterestedly and flicked it away only to snatch it back up a split second later and stare at it.
"What is this?" he asked still staring at the piece of paper in his hand.
"It's the money I owed you" Khushi chirped.
"What money?" Arnav looked up at her confused.
"Haw Hai you don't remember?" she asked shocked and then rolled her eyes when he shook his head. "I'll explain. Rs. 25,000 I promised I would give you when I bumped in to your car, remember?"
A memory of them colliding in Delhi surfaced and he remembered mocking her for being too poor to afford the damages, how she had retaliated that she would pay him every penny and landed in his office looking for employment.
"Rs. 100,000 for breaking the contract with AR when I first worked here, remember? You should, you taunted me about it enough" Khushi pouted. "And the remaining Rs. 300 is the ones I borrowed on Holi" Khushi finished. "Now I am debt free and you can't taunt me about owing you anything!"
"So this is why you started this dabba service?" Arnav stared at her.
"Don't give your self so much importance Mr Raizada" Khushi mocked. "I needed a business to be able to stand on my own two feet once this marriage is over." Arnav flushed. It had been five months and he had let her have her way thinking everyday that soon she would go back where she came from and he would be rid of that snake of a brother in law in the bargain.
"A month from now when you throw me out of your house, and when my Amma and Buaji slam their door in my face I will need this business not only to provide for me but to have something to do. I will be truly independant" Khushi smiled "and I won't be at anyone's mercy any more."
She turned around and walked out of his cabin and Arnav was left staring at the cheque in his hands. He pulled out his phone and dialled a number.
"Mr. Mishra I would like to open up a new account... yes... for my Mrs... yes... I'll deposit Rs. 125,300 for now and then my lawyer will deposit the same amount every month. Yes just ask him for the details." He hung up on his banker and then got up off his chair as he surveyed his employees on their lunch break.
Total crap I know... but I have my mind focused on other things so this is as good as its going to get!! so sue me!!!
