Leher's heart was breaking into pieces. She had lied to her Chacha and Chachi when they asked her where she was running off to. She didn't care. Abeer'.her Abeer was missing. She has run all the way to the site of the incident and there was chaos all over. People were hurt and dead bodies were being taken away.
She spotted Dadi, who was looking for Abeer and tears started to flow afresh in Leher's eyes. She was thankful that dadi was fine but her heart and eyes searched for that one person.
"Abeer" she murmured to herself, wringing her hands in desperation. He had to be fine. Fate couldn't be cruel to her. She did not deserve this. She ran around, her eyes searching for his tall frame, his smiling face, him, she needed to find him. As she turns around, her eyes fell on a body, the policemen were lifting. She died a thousand deaths in that moment.
Rushing to the stretcher, with her heart in her throat and her hand trembling violently, she lifted the sheet from the face of the body but closed her eyes.
"Madam'..do you know him?" the policeman asks and her eyes fly open. She takes a look but it's an unfamiliar face. She lets out a breath, even she didn't know she was holding and shakes her head a no and they take away the body.
Her trembling legs give away and she falls on her knees. "Abeer" she shouts. Where was he? "Oh god 'please keep him safe'.please'.please'I beg this of you'please" she prays hard, her eyes closed and hands folded.
Once, she needed to see him once. She got up and started her frantic search again. She screamed his name, hoping he would hear. She was running around like crazy and spotted his parents and sister. She stopped abruptly. Why was she even here? These people were worried sick about him as they loved him. What about her? She refused to answer the question, but her feet wouldn't move.
She loved him more than life. She finally accepted that. She couldn't lie to herself anymore. She was running like a mad woman because he meant the world to her. He was her world. Just then she spotted Sudha aunty rush towards someone and ran forward to see who it was. She saw the worry on his mother's face and her heart broke.
"Abeer'.please'.don't make us go through this" she whispers and starts her search. She turns around to see him walking down a few steps, his face a little bloodied but he was holding his left hand in his right one and an expression of pain was etched on his face. Relief coursed through her veins and tears and smiles plastred on her face.
"Abeer" she yelled and he looked up and shock replaced pain. She started running towards him when another voice called out to him and he turned in that direction and Leher saw his family coming towards him. He looked at her and them and realization hit Leher like a slap on her face.
Her heart wanted to cover the distance between them and throw herself in his arms and cry her heart out for putting her in this situation but her feet started walking away. She looked back once and saw his intense stare and then ran away from there.
She reached home tired and the whole family was waiting for her.
"Where were you Guddan?" Kul asked and she looked frantically at Bittan and then spotted Deepa.
"I'.I'.g'got stuck'.I wasn't able to reach anywhere'.so I came back" she lies.
"Deepa's house is not too far away" he questions suspiciously.
"Chacha'.the streets, they were in a chaos'..I am sorry'.I know'..I just got stuck" she replied wringing her hand.
"Chachaji'..let didi rest'.she looks so sick" Bittan tries to jump in but Kul's stare stops her dead. Taking Bittan's lead, Leher acts faint and everyone rushes to her side. She is taken to her room and asked to rest. Deepa sits by her side while Bittan goes to get some food.
"Did you find him?" deepa asks, knowing where her friend must have rushed off too. Crying, Leher nods.
"Oh thank god" both the girls hug and when Bittan comes in, they tell her too and finally both the girls force Leher to eat something. Leher has a restless night. She gets up many a times to check on Abeer but she sees the whole family around him and somehow passes the night. The next day the sisters leave for the university but Leher's eyes keep darting to the Bajpee house.
She knew he wasn't going to be there in the university and she had not laid her eyes on him since yesterday. She was dying to get a glimpse of him but she reaches the university and is there without being there.
Omi spots the morose Leher and goes and stands in front of her. Without looking up she walks to the right and crosses him.
"Leherji" his voice stops her in her tracks. She doesn't dare to look behind. He comes in front of her and looks at her worried face.
"What happened? You look as if you saw a ghost" he asks, a stupid smile on his face.
"I '.unwell" she says and rushes and locks herself in the restroom. She sits there for some time and when she comes out, she sees him gone and attends her class. The day passes with her thinking about Abeer and finally she reaches home. Kul chacha is in a happy mood, distributing jalebis yet again. Leher tries her best to act normally and is happy when everyone decides to retire for the night.
It had been a whole day and she hadn't had a glimpse of Abeer. She tossed and turned and then finally got up and pulled the dupatta she had hidden in the corner of her almirah and hugged it. She smelled it, she wanted to feel close to him. She draped it around herself and closed her eyes, imagining herself to be in his arms.
"Leher" she could hear her name in his voice. A smile spread across her face and when she opened her eyes, she was disappointed to be in her room, dreaming. Slowly, she put the dupatta around her neck and quietly walked to the roof. Maybe'.just maybe he was there. She had to see with her own eyes'.just once and then she would be back.
She reached the roof and wandered around, looking in his room. There was no light. Maybe he was asleep. Disappointed, she sits on the cemented seat. She sits there remembering the last time they had spent the night on the roof. A smile plays on her lips as she remembers their inane'.actually his inane conversations.
He had asked if she had a boyfriend and then told her in his style that she couldn't handle one. He hadn't been far from the truth. There was a strong gust of wind and her dupatta flew from around her. She gets up to catch it and watches it shocked as it lands on Abeer's head, draped around him. His eyes kept looking in hers and he took off the dupatta from his face and bunched it in his right hand. She saw that his left was encased in a plaster.
Her eyes refused to leave his face. Unknown to her, he face glowed at seeing him. He came slowly towards her, his eyes not leaving hers either but they had anger in them. Without a word, he handed her the dupatta and she took it with trembling fingers and draped it around her neck. They stood staring at each other for long. Abeer's gaze questioning and angry and hers full of love and tears.
He turns to leave abruptly and Leher asks, "Abeer'.how are you?" not wanting him to turn away from her.
"Why? Dead or alive'.I shouldn't be your concern" he replies his face turning towards her, but his back still turned on her.
"Please Abeer'.I was so frightened" she tells him and he slowly turns to face her and walks back to her.
"Frightened? I thought you would be happy'..happy that the problem you are running away from is dead and gone" he says harshly, his face near her and instinctively her hand rises to his lips, stopping him from saying such bad stuff.
His eyes fly to her face at her action. She slowly shakes her head, tears falling but her hand is still covering his lips.
"Please'..never say such things'..you have no idea how everyone was worried" she says and he looks at her stunned. Slowly she becomes conscious of her hand on his mouth and pulls it away and his eyes reflect hurt at her action.
"Who everyone?" he asks.
"You mother, father, chutki, dadi, Deepa" she replies and looks down, not able to meet his piercing gaze.
"Yeah they love me'..I guess that is natural" he replies and she slowly nods in agreement, not looking up at him.
"What I don't understand is what you were doing at Kaali baadi? Looking for someone you love? Did you find them?" he asks conversationally and her eyes rise to meet his.
Why was he asking this? He knew the answer to it 'didn't he?
"I'..I'.." she stammers, blushing. How could she answer his question.
"What are you doing here''you should rest" she changes the topic and starts fidgeting with the end of her dupatta.
"I can ask you the same''why are you here? Why are you unable to sleep Leher?" he continues questioning her.
"It was hot inside" she lies and looks everywhere but at him.
"Hot or something is stifling you?" he asks not ready to let go.
"Nothing" she replies sharply and turns to go. He grabs her hand before she can leave and she tugs it hard to free herself and as a result, Abeer hits his fractured arm on the edge of the wall.
"Dammit" he curses and let's go of her hand, cradling his injured one.
She turns immediately at his cry and sees pain on his face.
"S..Sorry'Abeer" she rushes close to him but he steps back. She apologizes again but he simply moves away, walking away from her.
Without another thought, she crosses into his roof and rushes after him and catches him before he can lock himself in his room.
"Abeer'.listen to me" she says holding to his right arm gently.
"I don't think so" he tries to shake her off and step inside but she holds him tighter.
"Abeer listen'..I'.I am sorry" she pleads.
"Don't be'.you are good at hurting people'..and just so you know'.sorry doesn't work" she tries to shrug her of again but she places her forehead on his shoulder and starts crying.
"Leher'..please'.let go of me'.I don't know why you are crying'I'll live" he says curtly.
"I can't" she cries and he turns to look at her. He gently lifts her chin to face him.
"You can't what Leher?" he asks softly and she breaks down completely in front of him and goes on her knees. Abeer is shocked at her emotional breakdown and his aching heart sits next to her.
"Leher?" he takes her name questioningly.
"I can't live like this anymore Abeer" she sobs, "I can't live without you'..I can't see you in pain" she mumbles incoherently, not making sense.
Abeer's heart jumps with joy. She had just told him that she couldn't live without him. Were his ears ringing? "Leher'..calm down please" he gets up to get her some water but she stops him.
"Don't go'.please'.don't go away from me'.I can't bear it Abeer" she looks at him with so much pain that he sits back next to her and takes her face in his hands, wincing when he has to lift his left arm.
"Abeer '.does it pain too much?" she asks, touching it gently and he says No.
"Liar" she hits him and he smiles.
"Does it pain too much for you Leher?" he asks and she understands what pain he was referring to.
"Yes'..it does'..it pains when you are rude, when you tell me that you have forgotten me, when you ignore me, when you come near me, when you stay away from me'..it pains'.all the time Abeer" she tells him, tears flowing unchecked.
"For me too" he tells her softly.
"Why Abeer'.why does it happen?" she asks and he smiles humorlessly.
"I don't know about you'.but for me'..my heart pains because the one I love has closed her heart to me" he replies looking into her eyes and his words touch her soul. She closes her eyes at his words.
"I think it pains because I can't close my heart any longer" she opens her eyes but his eyes are cautious. His gaze is boring into hers for her answer.
"Abeer'..I am sorry'..I thought I lost you today'..I went mad looking for you'..don't do this ever again Abeer'ever'.I love you so much'..so much" her voice breaks and she cups his face tightly and hugs him, never wanting to let him go.
Every pain, every hurt was replaced by pure joy in Abeer's heart. He hugged her tight too.
"I love you too leher'.I love you" he replies back and a smile plays on both their lips. Abeer comes close to her and wipes her tears, "I am sorry" he says and she nods.
"Very sorry" he says coming closer and his lips are just a breadth away from hers; she looks into his eyes with all the love for him and closes her eyes. He gently places a soft kiss on her lips and Leher breaks away abruptly. She stands up blushing and tries to leave.
"Some more time'please" he implores.
"N'No'.you get out of hand" she says, trying to obey her brain.
"I won't 'promise'..please'..neways the night is never long for people who are in love" he says cheekily reminding her of his earlier dialogue on love.
"Abeer" Leher tries to look at him angrily but smiles instead.
"Leher'..you can't leave me'.you haven't even asked where and how much it pains''see'it pains here, here, here" he starts pointing and Leher laughs at him.
Finally the man she had fallen in love with was back''she was happy and now she knew thay both could had to fight the world but tonight was just theirs. Untainted by reality, full of love.
