Mani Ratnam had first approached Khan for the role that is now being essayed by Abhishek Bachchan

Before Abhishek Bachchan stepped into Mani Ratnam's Ravan, the director had approached Shah Rukh Khan for the role. Sources reveal that Mani wanted to have SRK and Ash as the leading pair of his bilingual film.

We hear that the Chennai-based director called SRK and told him about the film. Shah Rukh said that he was interested and that they would meet at a later date for the narration.

Long delay

A source says, "Not many know that Shah Rukh was the first choice. Mani had written the script keeping him in mind.

Also, when Mani approached Ash she suggested that he should approach SRK for the role opposite her."

However it was not meant to be. There was a long delay following the initial discussion between the director and the actor, and in the meantime he committed his dates to Aditya Chopra.

When asked if he had indeed been the first choice for the AbhiAsh starrer, Shah Rukh says after a pause, "Yes Mani sir had spoken to me.

Actually there were two reasons I had just said yes to him. I had given up on Idiots or they had thrown me out of Idiots anyway you want to look at it and Robots had fallen through with Shankar.

So both films were not happening and I had time. Mani sir said he had a project for me and we decided to chat about it when he came to Bombay.

But unfortunately by the time we sat on it, Adi had already approached me for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and I had committed to it. But I would have loved to work with Mani sir any time."

Jungle mein mangal

When asked if shooting in remote jungles was a reason to stay away from Ravan, SRK says, "That I just joke with everyone.

I told Ashutosh agli baar jab Jodhaa Akbar banayega (I was supposed to do Jodhaa Akbar), toh yahan banana. I travel everywhere, I just joke with people.

But if a film requires then I will shoot anywhere. Like for Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan I am shooting from Borivili to Boston.

I have no issues, but I only like to time it so that when my kids have holidays, I can be with them."

I can't imagine anyone else as Akbar now, but SRK would've been cool too. 😉

I do wish he had done Raavan instead of RNBDJ though.. even though I liked RNBDJ for him and Anushka...

I really did liked Hrithik as Akber and after watching him i respect him more as a actor. Even though Swades flopped at the BO, Srk performance was hugely appreciated and i am sure Srk would had done justice to the role. It always came in my mind which watching the movie 😆

It would been really awesome if Srk was doing Raavan because he ROCKS in negative roles and Mani Ratnam movies are always different and he's a brilliant Director. But Srk is producing movie Ra.1 where he will be playing lead role and will be using special effects from Hollywood.

Yeah, I will echo the chorus and say it would have been really nice to see SRK-Aish in Ravan. Dil Se is one of my favorite SRK films, and as much as I like Suri, it would have been cool to see him in something out of his comfort zone.
