God, I'm rereading Anne of Green Gables rn and it's so good to be reminded of what great writing actually feels like! šŸ˜Œā¤ļø

This book is also recommended to middle graders, but it's so lively and the characters are so real. It really feels like you get to know and meet all these people personally smiley42

Read this book back in fifth grade for the first time and I fell in love with Anne pretty much immediately ā¤ļøā¤ļø she was one of my favourite characters growing up (Marilla and Matthew too) and as I've grown up, my love for her has only grown as well... it now resides in a quiet little corner of my heart, just like Green Gables šŸ’ššŸ˜Œ

I reread this book every few years, it's both a palate cleanser and a comfort book for me. Been a while since I last read it, feels great to come back home after such a long time :")

I'm finally getting around to starting the Percy Jackson series! I just finished Ch. 4 of The Lightning Thief - Annabeth just had her first ever line and I'm having so much fun with this book. (Not that I ever really doubted that I wouldn't like it - it might've been nearly 15 years ago, but I remember really liking The Lightning Thief when I first read it. I simply did not continue the series because 10-year-old me thought boys were disgusting and was not willing to read another book from a boy's POV. smiley37)

My thoughts so far:

  • The book is incredibly funny in just the most unserious way.
  • Rick Riordan's characterization is so distinct from the get-go, like, Percy's snark/humour is very different from Grover's (for example).
  • I'm actually kind of mad that middle grade and children's books get to have fun chapter titles and YA/NA books don't. (At least from what I've seen.)
  • I'm already incredibly attached to Percy's mom, Sally. The way Rick has written Percy to love her makes me love her as though she were my own mother.
  • Pleasantly surprised by my own Greek mythology knowledge. smiley36

Omg I love that you're reading PJO!! šŸ˜šŸ˜ I read this more or less the same time as HP and although HP will always be special to me because of the magic and Hogwarts and all the worldbuilding, there's just no beating Percy as a protagonist, specially with his first person narration in the PJO series. The sass and sarcasm is just chef's kiss 😘😘 the guy will have a snarky remark even when he's about to be killed smiley37 I remember when he faced the minotaur early on and when describing the horns he was like, you just couldn't get those from a normal sharpener. I knew I was a fan right then and there smiley37 he's quite unhinged as a character lol. His plans are always so out of the box and crazy smiley39 but hey, they somehow manage to work, so we just watch and enjoy smiley36

Also yes, Sally is amazing ā¤ļøā¤ļø the entire fandom loves her smiley36 Personally speaking, she's the coolest mom I've ever seen in fiction 😌

I'm so hyped for you to finish the book! And the series! Tag me with your thoughts as you read along or when you're done, please! smiley4

No, I've heard good things about it but the hair keeps putting me off šŸ˜… Anne's bright flaming red hair was a very important part of her character, it was the one feature about herself that she felt the most insecure about (literally one of the first things we get to know about her), and also in school, she got called "Carrots" and teased over it. The actress in the series is given such a muted red colour that it just disrupts my image of Anne šŸ™ˆ I can't imagine Anne feeling insecure over that hair colour, I feel like she would've loved it instead šŸ˜… also it just in no way resembles either carrots or flames

I watched one of the later episodes though, and I liked the vibe. Maybe someday I'll give the show an actual try smiley9

It's such a pity bcz apart from the hair, she actually resembles Anne a lot. A thin, sort of bony appearance, big grey-green eyes, big mouth, freckles all over her face. They also seem to keep her in braids a lot, like in the books.

And Marilla and Matthew look quite like Marilla and Matthew. Especially Marilla. She looks exactly how she's supposed to be smiley27

I wonder why bright red hair gets dropped off from adaptations in favour of these more muted shades. Do they worry that the audience will not like/connect to the character if they have bright red hair? smiley18

They did this with the Little Mermaid live adaptation as well. I didn't quite watch it fully, but my mom did, and she said she enjoyed the movie but had difficulty connecting to Ariel bcz of how different she looked.

Yeah, I mean her hair IS red.smiley36.. probably not the fiery red that the book describes. Nonetheless, it's a wonderful series. My kiddo loved it and actually recommended it to me!

Yeah, one day I'll have to just get over it and watch it. With any other character I probably would've by now, coz I've really heard good things about this show. It's just that Anne's been like a best friend/sister/kindred spirit character to me since middle school... this book is a comfort book that I've read over and over in my life, so I honestly think I might be a bit too attached to Anne atp šŸ˜… the red hair was something that she hated about herself and later she learns to accept and love it... and that journey was very special to me. Seeing that important feature changed just feels a bit off.

Aww that's so cute though, getting a rec from your kid! smiley42 they seem to have good taste smiley27 are they also a reader like you?
