Nothing in this screams commercial and I refuse to believe that the producers that have been in this for as long as they have didn’t know this. There’s no way they didn’t take note of the slow pace, especially on mundane scenes
Noone read the script. They saw the outline - the rich drunken billionaire tycoon who reforms for love and becomes the selfless lover, the 8 crore deal, the mann mayal 2.0 shaadi problems and evil husband, attempted suicides, femme fatale dania, affairs and escorts, saazishi humsha, iddat dating and thought they had some masala entertainer on their hand. Haseeb probably told them he can make a masala show out of it which he did by adding flimsy nighties, alcohol ka overdose, nangi tangain, cringe intimacies, wahaj beauty shots and hero entries, out of cktr and misplaced eye fu**ing, terrible suspense/thriller/horror background music to scenes, and doubling down on overacting and melodrama. But then he tried to intellectualize it also by adding slomo long pauses and mundane details as if he is making a merchant ivory art film about idyllic country life in 18th century England. In the end he made some khichdi where flavors were out of balance and ingredients made no sense.
I think this show could have been executed as either a masala or a philosophical experimental project. What Haseeb did fit neither. I do think a good commercial director could have made a good masala entertainer (masala not mean cheap loud melodrama - I meant something along the lines of nadeem baig or musaddiq malik). But haseeb lacks that instinct and vocabulary. Every effort he made to make masala out of it was contrived and nonsense. Its like having a tone deaf person try to create music. The second option was to go the Alif way where your focus on the philosophy and authenticity of emotions. He didn't do that either. It didn't even need to be as experimental as that even. Dastak i am watching about has some parallels with smd but it's written acted and directed so sensibly and maturely. Its still a commercial drama just not a trashy one.
The show is so loosely structured that creative directors could have molded it in different ways based on the treatment and direction they wanted. The problem is haseeb had mo understanding or vision of the script and cktrs. You needed a director who took a position on what he thought was the central premise how storytelling unfolds and ctrs progress in keeping with that. Haseeb just followed script as is without looking at subtext arcs or connections.
