I thought Manu ruled over the entire earth. He was the one who built the ship and protected the species during Mathsya Avataar, he's the one Lord Vishnu commissioned for the task. (Before and) After the deluge, he ruled over everything and then installed Ikshvahu on the throne after him and left the Earth.

Ikshvahu's sons founded the three dynasties of Suryavanshis: Kausalyas, who ruled the kingdom of Kosala, Vidhehans, who ruled Vidheha, and Samkashyans, ruling over Samkashya. During King Seeradhwaja's time (Sita's father, Janaka was the title of the king of Vidheha) the king of the Samkashya, Sudhanvana, challenged him, saying he should give up Sita and Pinaka else face war. Seeradhwaja, fought, defeated Sudhanvana and killed him and then installed Kushadhwaja (his younger brother, Urmila and Shrutakirti's father) as king of Samkashya. Thus the three branches of Suryavanshis became two, since Kushadhwaja was Seeradhwaja's vassal (of sorts) and neither of them had a male heir. Seeradhwaja adopted Shatadyumna (as in chosen to be king after Seeradhwaja), son of another noble/king descended from Mithi (similar to Sumant being of royal/noble of Suryavanshi, there used to be lesser kings/vasals/governors who descended from royal bloodline in a kingdom and they either rule over smaller parts of the kingdom of become ministers of court). Shatadyumna, son of Kesidhwaja, son of Kiratadhwaja, assumed the name Bhanuman when he was crowned Janaka of Mithila after Seeradhwaja.
