No one can blame Viaan for still carrying a torch for Katha. She was his one great true love. He will always hold out hope for a reconciliation, always wish for them to get back together. He can hate her, be angry at her and still love her. Once you've experienced that kind of superlative, elite, one-of-a-kind type of love, it's hard to settle for less. It's like having to eat stale tuna after tasting caviar
Not just that. She also humanized him, turned him towards the light, made him feel things he didn't think was possible to feel. The happiness and contentment he felt because of her must be out of the world for him. He put her on a pedestal after wronging her once and refused to think about himself. For himself her hopes, fears, desires were always before his own. He's still stuck in that era where he feels guilty for the ONS and imo it says more about him. He knows him suggesting ONS was horrible, so whatever he goes through would be okay.
I'm not sure how much can I trust the writers for some sensibility in this regard because it's like any typical ITV show. Viaan is the only character I think that makes sense. I'm not going to disparage him feeling guilty, being hopelessly in love, and not caring about his self-respect and all. That is the point of his character.
