It is not social media hype.

Universities around the world are studying rise of Korean culture and its popularity.

Some think tanks also view it as almost a cultural aggression and soft power battle.

Will post links of those studies and articles in this thread, considering many think I am just talking based on Twitter trends.

This kind of popularity has not yet been witnessed by other non western nations. Except maybe Japan and China.

I am not saying India has not had its moments of fame abroad. And Bollywood, TV, single handedly made people want to learn Hindi in recent decades, across not just non Hindi states of India but also other nations.

I agree Indian women are eloquent and confident and stand out at pageants. Having said that, I have not really seen people obsessed with wanting to look like Indians or search what we eat or drink or what routine and regime we follow to look the way we do.

At the most people copy our dresses like sarees, salwar kameez, kurta, sherwani, or bindi, jewellery like maang tika or qamar bandh. That too only if they attend Indian weddings and functions for festivals like Diwali. This is also more prominent in only places where we have sizeable Indian diaspora such as UK, US, NZ, Canada, Australia etc.

It has not really caught fancy worldwide.

Even Koreans who live or were raised in India, admit people know them better now and treat them comparatively better since last few years thanks to popularity of K dramas, K pop. Otherwise people stared at them or assumed they were Nepali or from Northeast or China.

I have not yet seen that level of fandom for Indian or South Asian content. Rest of South Asia hardly produces as much as content as India anyway, except for Pakistani music which has a great following in subcontinent. Or one Sri Lankan song that went viral Manike something, in recent years in South Asia.

We have attained popularity for our content, pop culture but not *that* level of craze, the way Korean content has blazed charts everywhere or won prestigious awards or has people even travelling to Korea looking for BFs and GFs.

I have read that even on adult content sites there is demand for models who are Koreans or look like K drama or K Pop stars and many in West have fetish to such an extent that they even create AI version of Korean GF/BF or demand 'Asian' looking sex dolls.

I have yet to see *this* level of sheer obsession with South Asians in any part of the world.

I was surprised and curious just how did they manage to ignite such fetish for their stuff especially in the West? So much so that people (esp in Western media) forget that Asian does NOT mean only Korean and that Asia has other nationalities too.

I agree on Photoshop and surgeries part though. But that exists in all countries and is not limited to Koreans or ones obsessed with wanting to look like them.
