No doubt about whose day it was at Edgbaston. India well on top, with England coming in third behind the rain. It was disjointed stuff, thanks to the weather, but India channeled their inner Oasis to roll with it, their captain, Jasprit Bumrah to the fore. Not only did he help swindle 35 runs from a single Stuart Broad over, as India rode on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravi Jadeja to top 400, he then took the first three England wickets to fall, in between the falling rain. Mohammed Siraj then hooked the big wicket of Joe Root, as India took control in Brum. Of course, they were 98 for 5 themselves, and England have recent history of resurrection from a parlous position; but there's not a whole lot of batting to come (and India's attack still looks a mean machine one year on).

Day 2: Stumps - England trail by 332 runs

Clearly, emphatically, it was India's day. In the middle of all the rain and all the stop-start passages of play, we've had some thrilling action. Jadeja got to his first overseas century, Bumrah - of all people - smashed Broad for the most-expensive over in the history of Test cricket, India's tail wagged around big time to take them past 400, and then Bumrah - the bowler - struck. Twice, the dismissals came off the over's extra delivery thanks to a no ball. England's top-order worries continued, with Lees going first, Crawley falling in between the first and the second rain breaks, and Pope not lasting long either. Root and Bairstow strung together a decent recovery, but then a snorter of a delivery from Siraj was good enough to break the stand, before Shami finally had something to show for in a 13-over spell with the wicket of the nightwatchman. So India are placed exactly where England were before the Pant-Jadeja show on the first afternoon. And if England are to have one such show of their own, they couldn't have asked for two better batsmen at the crease.
