Chapter 105

The End?

Someday, you will rule this world, my son.

A wave of the hand, and each new captive could see and perceive each other. The sensory overload was sudden. When the artificial darkness dissipated, Abhay found everyone surrounded by the Vitael, and to his shock, countless of their dead comrades. These dead undead all had a similar aura and appearance to some he saw months back, like the ones that attacked them when Mandu was kidnapped by Maithili. Their faces were covered by the same red runes as the Vitael, and they walked with robotic movements, controlled by their master.

“This is–”

He was back where Ayushmaan held him captive earlier, only that the old buildings and spires looked more spread out. The field was larger and barren, and they were all collected like cattle within it. A roar of applause rained down from the farthest tower above, drawing the attention of all the supernaturals on the ground. Abhay couldn’t count how many of them there were. It seemed like every supernatural being in the entire world was present here.

How big is this place?, he wondered.

“Welcome, welcome!” Ayushmaan yelled from the skies. Everyone looked up to see him. He looked different. His scars were gone and healed, making him look younger. A light shrouded his form and blinded those who were close. “It would be my utmost pleasure to send you all to your deathbeds. This world is ours to rule. We don’t need you around to stop us.”

He long dreamed of this day. Maithili was permanently out of his way. The elation he felt out of the delivered news regarding her demise made him all the more eager to end the rest of the story.

Ayushmaan was keen on killing Abhay and Piya together at the very end, but he couldn’t see her nor sense her anywhere. He didn’t understand why, and he shrugged it off for the moment, knowing he had so many others to get through before them anyways. He planned to kill them last, together and surrounded by the corpses of their loved ones. Maybe they were hiding her with their powers.

Not for long.

He lifted his arms, and caged the countless supernaturals inside a formation made by his army of dead undead and his kind, unable to be crossed. A signal was given. Attacks were unleashed. A battle to the death, while he watched from above. It had all been so easy. All he had to do was sit back and enjoy the show. Several wiccan tried to teleport outside the formation, but they hit an invisible barrier and were thrown back down into the chaos.

Abhay was searching for his family, and was trying to sense Piya, but neither of those were accomplished. Piya was likely not there. He swooped down, dodging a burst of dark magic that was hurtled towards him. It grazed his shoulder, tearing through the cloth of his shirt and burning his skin. Doubling down from the immediate pain, he saw the fleeting images of Siddharth some feet away from him. He gripped his shoulder and landed another punch into the jaw of a wolf, hurtling it over the wall, dead right after contact. Then, he lunged at the Vitael who targeted him first, creating sharp claws with his shadows and impaling them through the chest. He crushed the heart, and transformed completely.

Left and right, blood spurted and screams were the dominant sounds in the air. Their opponents came back stronger, much stronger, and many were struggling to level the playing field. Abhay felt tired sooner than he expected or wanted, but this was a different kind of fatigue. He didn’t think too far into it. It could have been an effect of Ayushmaan’s dark magic.

Abhay pierced the air with his shadowy form, aiming straight for Ayushmaan’s heart. He wasn’t sure it would work, but it was worth a try. A barrier stopped him, giving him an electric-like shock and forcing him back to his human form. He fell gracefully to the ground, and tried again. Scaling a tree closest to him, he lunged in the air and tried to slash his face.

“Enough Abhayendra. I just healed those old scars.”

Ayushmaan stuck his palm out, and blasted Abhay into the tree he just climbed. It fell over, uprooted, and crashed with a boom on the ground. Abhay’s back created a massive crater in the trunk. Some of his ribs broke, and he coughed up blood. A werewolf tried to take the opportunity to finish him, but Abhay retaliated and bit them while his blood was in his mouth, poisoning the wolf to death.

“You truly can’t touch me now. No one can.”

Abhay staggered on his feet, wiping his face with a sleeve and glaring at Ayushmaan.

“It isn’t good to be overconfident.”

Ayushmaan sneered, and lowered himself to the ground, for a final match. Abhay took a cautious step back, claws forming behind his back. He snarled, locking eyes with his greatest enemy.

“Bring your soulmate here as well. I would love to kill you together.”

Abhay lifted an eyebrow. That meant Piya’s separation from him wasn’t his doing.

Then who?

“She’s not here. I want to feel bad for you, your last wish will go unfulfilled.”

“You think you can kill me, you foolish parasite?” He sneered. “Me?! The one who controls Nature?!”

They lunged at each other, struggling to gain the upper hand over the other. Abhay was starting to feel the strange weakness take over as time went on, and he worried it would truly be the end if it took over completely. He winced while simply moving, but kept fighting. Both figures were so fast that it was hard to see them.

Now, now. I think I’ve had enough.

Both recognized the voice immediately. The bright light enveloped the whole area, blinding all and making the fighting stop for a moment. There was a couple seconds of silence, and then Ayushmaan’s screams. It was a scream so shrill and loud that one would think his body was being torn apart. His arms stretched back and eyes rolled back, no one to help him. He strained his sight to see why, only to find all of his allies crumbling to dust.

A cold hand gripped his face, and cold eyes stared straight at him. Eyes filled with fury. He couldn’t help but snicker. That expression reminded him of when Siddharth slashed his face centuries ago. Was he finally on the losing side now? Again?

“I’ll be taking my authority back now. You had your fun.”

Nature crushed his face in her palm, spilling innards and blood towards the ground. The rest of his body crumbled, and that was the end of that. She didn’t bat an eye at what she had done, only that it was necessary to keep balance in this world. These Vitael had caused too much chaos already.

And with a snap of her fingers, everything was normal again. Back to the way it should be, as the laws dictated. The land around them shrunk back to normal, startling some by the sudden proximity to the old structures, as if they had grown legs and sprinted closer on their own.

Abhay stood dumbfounded, and looked around. Everyone felt the same. He found his family, and hugged them all at once. He couldn’t remember the last time he did that.

We are all okay.

He began to relax. But once the adrenaline subsided, he fell to his knees, suddenly feeling weak and lightheaded. His limbs shook when he tried to use them. Something was not right. They were not out of danger yet.

“Piya…,” he murmured.

Hurry, Nature said to him in his head. For a moment, even she looked at him with sympathy. Time is running out.

——————————————————————————————————————————

Run, run far away from here. You have to.

Piya's feet began to ache and her sandals felt like they were falling apart. Each running step slammed into the ground, creating light tremors in the earth. She was running for her life, yet again. She could feel it, deep in her bones. When would it stop? When could she return to her normal life? When could she feel happy again? These questions swirled in her mind as her body pushed forward. It seemed like she had been running forever, and the trees began to blur and look the same after sometime. She turned her head left and right, unable to tell exactly where she was. Her foot caught onto a loose root of one neighboring tree, throwing her onto the ground. She wished to lay there indefinitely, stop time, and just rest. It was all so tiring.

You have to keep moving. This can’t end here.

She forced herself up, grasping the tree trunk for support. After brushing the dirt, broken twigs, and leaves from her bleeding knees and elbows, she kept moving, far from the palace. Her stride slowly turned back into a sprint once the cuts stopped burning and healed. Tears stung her eyes thanks to the piercing winds, or maybe because of her inner turmoil.

An intense rush of darker shadows in the trees, on either side of her, forced her to stop in her tracks again. In the darkness before her, she saw a pair of red eyes staring straight at her. At first it was only one pair, then it became two, three, then several. A symphony of growls and snarls would have made her feel less afraid, could she hear. The silence was so much more terrifying. Piya took steps back, turning to run in the opposite direction. But there was more behind her, more human shaped eyes, also red, and twice as many. All their faces were covered with red runes.

They’re everywhere.

Piya turned her head to and fro. These strange apparitions were closing in on her. They were like the wolf that attacked her and Vihaan at the mansion some time back. Puppets. Murderous puppets. Some of the ones that resembled vampires grabbed her arms and legs, pulling her back into some sort of abyss as the ones that resembled wolves snapped their muzzles to keep her from fighting back.

Let me go!

She tried to move and kick her limbs, but they were too strong. Imprints of their grips burned her skin. She shrieked, and birds flew out of their nests away from the chaos. There were bites, and broken bones. Gashes and bruises. The more she struggled, the more they retaliated. She was being mauled into submission, or to death. But before she could lose consciousness, the back of her neck grew hot, and a bright light unleashed in the surroundings. Every apparition was wiped out, turned to dust, and then she started to run again. It was as if nothing had happened to her. She was completely fine.

She looked back just to make sure, shocked to find more after her. Some of the non-wolves looked familiar, as if she had fought alongside them.

How many?!

The apparitions were seemingly more agile than her, and multiplied quickly, yet she was able to just barely outrun them. She didn’t dare look back. Something about the dead undead was more unnerving than just the dead. But she couldn’t sense their distance, not without her hearing.

It hurts…

She gripped the back of her neck and winced. It burned. That stone was trying to protect her, but it cost her her own energy. It took much effort to keep her feet moving. One more time, she needed to check.

The area looks familiar now.

Quickly, she threw her head back and saw them a few feet behind her. Beads of sweat dripped down her forehead as she ran, avoiding the mansion to avoid luring them there where Vihaan could get hurt. She could only guess where she was going next, ignoring the cycle of blisters on the soles of her feet.

Those feet had a destination in mind. A journey she often made but recently neglected. The edelweiss hill. It didn’t look much like its former self. The flowers were almost dead and their petals dissolved into the soil. Drying stems were the prominent feature of this hill. Only a bright light shone from behind the topmost tree. She remembered wanting to investigate it, before Mandu took her home.

She felt it would keep her safe, whatever that light was. It was like the one she felt within her, protecting her when her angel wasn’t around. She didn’t want to give him a reason to worry. There were still many dreams she wanted to see alongside him.

It was a branch, or a root. It was hard to tell. It didn’t look like it belonged from the tree it grew next to. It was as white as snow, with blue vein-like structures that flowed like the clear afternoon sky. Something about it gave her chills when her hand drew near. Each time, her fingers curled back.

Please….help….me….

Her head whirled around, searching for the voice. The same lines repeated, like they were being looped on a tape recorder. When she leaned her head closer to the branch, it got louder. Was it coming from there?

The voice sounded painful and weak. To hear such a voice from a thing so vibrant and powerful didn’t make sense. Maybe whoever was calling to her was trapped, trapped somewhere or within this natural anomaly.

Can you hear me?

She waited a few minutes.

Yes….please…help….

She wanted to help, but didn’t know how.

This branch….it’s a part of me. Only you can release me from these binds. Touch it.

There was a sincere plea in the voice that she felt that she could trust. Her fingers reached for the glowing branch once again. She grabbed it, and a burst of pure energy instantly erupted from the contact point, spreading rapidly in all directions and instantly wiping out the ghost-like supernaturals from existence. It even spread up her arms and covered her whole body. Everything was bright. She couldn’t see, but it felt warm. Time seemed to not exist in this strange dimension. Her head pounded. She gripped her ears and screamed, head hanging low. It hurt again, just like when she lost her hearing.

When it stopped, she looked up, and opened her eyes. There was a lush garden before her. An old woman lay now at peace, in a bed of roses. She opened her eyes and looked at Piya, wounds healing gradually.

“Who are you?,” Piya asked, hesitating to take a step. The floor looked like it was partially made of clouds. The aura reminded her of the massive library that Time lived in. Perhaps this was the same concept. She was in the realm of another cosmic being.

“Nature. I’m the one you saved. I apologize, I had to create those monstrous illusions in order to bring you to me.”

Piya was perplexed, and took a step back instead, clutching her hands behind her back.

“I…did?”

“Yes. You did.” She smiled a little and stood up, touching her ears. “And this is my thanks to you.”

Piya’s ears felt warm, and her cheeks flushed pink. It felt really good for some reason, like she was being healed from a chronic ailment. She could already feel herself fading, a feather hovering in the sky.

“There. Now you must return. Your new fate beckons to you.”

She opened her eyes again to immense pain, sitting right under the tree where the mysterious branch once was. It was gone.

“Abhay!” She screamed without intention. The shock came when she could hear her own voice again. Pulling her hands away from her ears, she found her palms soaked in her own blood. The ringing wouldn’t stop, but the sounds began to introduce themselves again.

She tried to get up, but her body wouldn’t relent. It hurt deep in her bones to stand, and she collapsed on the ground. It felt easier to finally close her eyes and rest, maybe she could regain strength that way. Her hand reached out, thinking she saw Abhay nearby.

It was only a mirage. She could only hope and wait. But that was for another time. Now it was time to take a long rest. It was over, finally over.

“Abhay, come back soon,” she murmured under the moon and stars. Her sight began to blur and her eye began to close. She felt weak again, but it was probably because of how tired she was. “Look at how beautiful the night sky is.”

——————————————————————————————————————————

Abhay dreaded such weakness, clawing away at his chest until it bled and stung. His feet slipped a few times as he climbed the hill, after smelling her blood all the way from where the return portal opened. There she lay on her side, quiet. Were it not for the blood dripping out of her ears, it only looked like she was taking a nap under the stars. Curse his eyes for being able to see the full picture.

His eyes widened, tears rushing down his cheeks.

“Piya….no…..no no no! Wake up!”

His screams filled the soundless void in the air. He rolled her onto her back, and grasped her wrist, desperate to hear a louder heartbeat. He thought his own ears were betraying him. He couldn’t stay up, and slowly lowered himself onto the ground beside her to conserve strength. He could feel his soul slowly slipping away. The world was slowly starting to spin. His head went in and out of lightheadedness, but his eyes couldn’t lose focus on his light, his beautiful firefly.

Piya didn’t have much time. He didn’t have much time. They were fading together, fated to be gone before the dawn came, if he didn’t do something to prevent it. He grasped that pale wrist tighter, hoping to hold them down to the earth, defiant against such a fate.

I won’t let you go.

It was commonly said when death drew near, one could see their life flash before their eyes. Even if he experienced such a thing 300 years ago, it was next to impossible to remember it. He saw flashes of Piya now, when he first saw her in the forest, when they confessed to one another and she accepted him for what he was, when they became one in body and soul, and every moment in between. It was mostly just her. Of course that would be true, she was his life after all.

His tears dotted her cheeks and rolled off into the soil, staining her paleness with streaks of black. He towered over her and turned her head to the side, which took no effort due to her own weakness. The veins faintly pulsed. He had a hard time seeing them, and he had to touch the skin hiding them to make sure they were still there and pumping. Those fingers shook. That cursed idea lodged itself into his mind once again. He had done this before, though both times he didn’t wish to. In desperation, he turned his family. Piya was no less than family. That desperation was returning, the fear of loss. Deja vu.

The leaves stopped tumbling in the wind, the sound of crickets were muted. There was a familiar presence a little distance away from them. The presence that haunted him for most of his life, in the background. Nature watched quietly as he suffered through this dilemma, unable to show even an ounce of sympathy on her expression. She was grateful, but that didn’t mean the rules could be bent.

Abhay heard her voice in his head, just like all the other times. It was the first time, however, that he felt this much anger towards her. Piya’s head shifted slightly, faintly whispering his name, drawing his attention back. It had been so long since he heard her voice, let alone his name from her lips.

“Jaan, can you…hear me now?” He murmured, rubbing the backs of her ears with his fingers. Piya didn’t answer the question outright, but there was a little more strength in her voice. She could hear again.

She saved me, but I cannot save her. It is against the laws I have dictated for this world. And no, I cannot grant an exception. Returning her lost sense is all I can do.

Abhay grit his teeth, and pounded his fists into the dirt. Everyone was selfish. He should have guessed Nature would be the same. To her, preserving natural order took the utmost priority. He glanced upward again, to see the white silhouette walking away from them until it disappeared into the growing fogs far in front of them.

It’s fate, Abhay. She will join your world, one way or another.

Piya’s breathing was growing shallow. She stopped taking his name too. Abhay lost composure. If he didn’t turn her, someone else would. In fact, he knew anyone from the First Family would be itching to create another Duralis vampire, especially with a soul as powerful as hers. He could already sense some of them stepping forward behind them. They had shown up after him, waiting for an opportunity to speak.

“Please leave.” He said as firmly as possible, even as his voice started to shake, with remorse, anger, and fatigue. “Let me do this….alone.”

This was time he wanted to give to her, no one else.

There was some grumbling, but no objections, and soon he was granted the privacy that he asked for, waiting until the footsteps faded from his hearing and the scents were carried away by the breeze. He stared at her throat, swallowing nervously. Once again, he was about to be selfish, a hypocrite. The life he wanted her to stay away from, he was instead the one forcing it upon her. Was there no other choice? He could let them both die there, and they could meet again in another lifetime. One where he could be human again. But Piya wanted this, and she even promised she would accept this life when they married. They both wanted to spend time with each other in this life, and he wanted to see her live out her dreams. There was so much she had left to accomplish here. That violin of hers missed her as well. Remembering how happy she was to stand on the stage at the Musikverein, he leaned down and kissed her. She managed to mumble his name one more time, faint and out of breath.

Forgive me, jaan. This will hurt.

He deeply bit into his wrist and then carefully took a gentler bite into her neck. His free hand reached under her top and tore a deep gash into her stomach with his nails. Her whimpers made his heart hurt, but it had to be done. His bleeding wrist pressed into the gash, and he began to feed on her blood and mix his venom while his blood entered her emptying veins. Drain her near dry, that's what had to be done. Those veins turned black for a second and then faded into her body. Finally, he held her hand and recited the incantation, her invite to his world, one he wished to forget after this hour. Soon, he could feel life and energy returning to his body, and with it, could only hear a slowed and vanishing heartbeat from his love. His crimson irises were dim and full of tears, seeing her plight. Her blood remained on his lips. He wasn’t thirsty anymore.

He cradled her head in his arms, and broke into a muffled sob. There was no warmth in her anymore. Just like him, she would be a walking corpse. Isolated from the human world, even if it was her choice in the end. The withering edelweiss flowers beneath them began to bloom again, a miracle of nature, surrounding the two in a blanket of white. But the sound he loved went silent. This was a new, but bittersweet beginning.

It had to be done. It had to be done.
