Chapter 103
Unhinged
âBaba, can I sit on the big chair with you?â, asked a small Maithili, pointing at the golden throne. It was late at night, and Indranuj was examining some documents in the throne room. Maithili couldnât sleep, and began to wander the empty hallways of the palace with a cloth doll in her arms.
âThis is called a throne, Maithili.â
Indranuj smiled, and lifted her in his lap. She peered at some of the scrolls, confused with all the big, adult words.
âWill didi be reading all these when she sits here, just like you baba?â
âYes she will. Along with you.â
âMe?â
âYes. I would love nothing more than both my daughters to rule together. Pandher will continue to prosper in your capable hands.â
It had been a while since she genuinely smiled at a memory. Her cheeks were hot with a few tears, forced to cease after she grit her teeth. It physically hurt to cry. Maithili crawled her way to a nearby pond, and stared at her reflection. Her skin was charred in some places, her bones ached, and her cheeks were sunken. Something felt different about her own body. She had no strength within her. The moonlight was blinding. She rolled on her back and covered her eyes. It was harsh, that very moon that once gave her strength.
âMy powersâŠâ
She lay with her arms spread, feeling the cool of the grass under them and the water glossing her fingertips. It was all for naught. What was all of this for?
âIs it all gone? That easily? NoâŠit canât be. I was supposed to be the most powerful. No one could defeat me.â
She didnât want to move. She couldnât even be angry. Perhaps this is what she deserved. She could never belong anywhere, nor have anything. No wonder her own kind betrayed her. No wonder her own father lied to her. No wonder her birth mother never loved her. No wonder her sister never looked back at her.
She rued the day she was born, and wished that if she had no choice in the matter, that she had been born human.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Abhay had passed out on the way back, unusual for a vampire who had fed on quite a bit of human blood, Piyaâs blood no less. Piya was feeling better, able to walk on her own just behind Abhay and the others. She cast additional glances back in the direction of the palace, wondering if Maithili was still there.
Is she dead? Or did she run?
She tugged on Siddharthâs sleeve and pointed back. He opened his mouth, but remembered their small predicament. He handed her his phone to type a note in.
âMaithiliâŠat the palace?â He said to himself, looking back in the same direction. His brows furrowed. He wanted to check now, lest she escape, but getting Abhay and Piya safely home was more important. Especially before Abhay woke up. They picked up their pace and soon reached the mansion.
âTake him to the basement.â He said, helping Piya sit on the couch. She looked on as Abhay disappeared down the steps, wondering why they would need to keep him there. Someone took a pair of cuffs down, prompting her to stand and go after them.
Why those? Wait!
Haseena stood in front of her, blocking her path. She held Piyaâs arms and shook her head. Abhay was unpredictable at the moment. They couldnât risk him hurting her again.
âPiya said she went to meet Maithili.â Siddharth said, directing the conversation elsewhere. Manduâs eyes widened. She didnât tell Piya about that conversation, then how did she know?
âWhere?â She asked.
âAt the palace. She might still be there.â
âThe both of us will go check with the rest of the clan. You stay here, Siddharth.â Haseena said, gesturing at Mandu. Siddharth nodded, and watched them depart at once. Piya stood quietly near the basement door, hands balled into fists. Vihaan had crawled to her feet and tugged on her clothes, diverting her attention elsewhere for the time being. She picked him up, and sat down on the couch again.
An hour later, there was a slamming sound coming out of the basement that rattled the walls of the mansion. Siddharth hurried down, stood in the cell in their basement, and squatted down to meet Abhayâs eyes. The latter woke up calm, but aggressively fought at his restraints every so often. Siddharth hated having to put those cuffs on him in the first place. Abhay looked up, and tilted his head to the side, running his tongue over the dried blood that stuck to the corner of his lips.
âWhere is she?â
âUpstairs. A little more time apart will do you both well.â
âI want to see her.â
âAfter you nearly drained her dry? No.â
There was a hint of emotion in Abhayâs eyes. Siddharth couldnât completely tell if he was in his senses or not, or what the cause of his dangerous behavior was in the first place.
âI can control myself. I swear.â
âShall we test it then?â
He reached behind him and tossed a blood bag up in the air, up and down, in his right hand and dragged a fingernail across the plastic. Several drops oozed out and fell to the floor, and with it the fangs emerged again. The metal of the cuffs strained and cracked, then snapped into smaller pieces. Abhayâs eyes pulsed as dark red as the blood that now pooled on the floor. He snatched the bag from Siddharthâs hands and emptied it in seconds.
âSorry, little brother. Youâre going to have to stay here a little longer.â
He stood up and began to walk out, not having the heart to restrain him again, but Piya was now there shaking her head and rushing forth. Abhayâs hand reached for her on its own, a look of guilt in his eyes.
JaanâŠIâŠ
Siddharth hesitated, then quickly gestured her back outside. Abhay snarled, and tried to go out, but Siddharth swiftly shut the door of the cell behind them. Piya went to the little opening in the door and touched his face. He was still not in control of himself. But he sounded deceptively sweet.
StayâŠplease?
She shook her head, and took a step back, much to Siddharthâs relief. He urged Piya to come back upstairs. She looked at him one more time, then backtracked down the hall. When they were walking back, a slam against the door startled her. Abhay had punched it, creating a massive dent, his body fighting his mind as it fought at a chance to make her his midnight snack.
âHow is he that strong right now?â
Siddharth assumed it to be from how potent Piyaâs blood had become for him. That, or Ayushmaan did something to him, something that Piya wasnât able to nullify by a simple touch. He tried to hurry themselves out, but Abhay was faster than usual. By then, he had gathered enough strength to transform, slipping through the cracks of the door as a shadow to then appear in front of Piya. He grabbed her by the waist and away from Siddharth, wearing a horrid grin on his lips. His fangs glistened, sharpened to the tip.
Piyaâs heartbeat took off. It was purely out of fear. This wasnât her Abhay.
âYou should have listened. Then I wouldnât have to do this.â
Her heartbeat drove him mad. Fear made her smell yummier. The adrenaline and the heatâŠit burned against his ice cold skin.
âMmmâŠ.â He murmured, licking his lips.
Siddharth lunged at him, tackling him to the ground. The stone stairs crumbled under the impact. He looked back at Piya, and she understood that she had to leave immediately. Abhay shoved Siddharth aside and wiped his busted bottom lip with the back of his palm, staring at her hungrily as she ran upstairs.
Siddharth punched him in the gut while he was distracted, launching him several feet back down the hall, away from the stairs. Abhay quickly gained footing and lunged forward, grabbing Siddharth by the shoulders and driving his knee up into his stomach. The walls of the basement were getting destroyed.
âSnap out of it, Abhay!â
âSnap out of what?â
They constantly threw punches and kicks, both trying to subdue the other. Abhay burst into maniacal laughter, effortlessly overpowering Siddharth far into their scuffle. The latter was battered and bruised, and almost unable to stand on his feet. Abhay was simply too strong. It was like a switch had flipped.
I canât let him near Piya right now.
With an arm under Abhayâs chin, he pressed the latter into the wall and tried to tire him out. It only had the opposite effect, and his feet began to slide.
âNothing personal, big brother. Iâm just a little parched, thatâs all.â He said with a smirk, pushing back. He threw Siddharth into another wall when his guard was low and darted upstairs, only to not find Piya in front of him. But he could smell her nearby. She was hiding.
Jaan? Where are you?
âThatâs enough Abhay.â Iolanda said, appearing in front of him through a portal. She made it to the mansion in time with Seraphina in tow. âI will handle things here, Sera. Go tend to and bring Siddharth upstairs.â
Haseena had called her and informed of Abhay being found, and about his condition. Only those of the First Family truly knew how dangerous it was for a Duralis vampire to be completely subservient to their beast.
âI donât take orders from you, old hag.â He spat, looking around for Piya. âWhere are you hiding, my darling Piya?â
Iolanda fumed, especially at his age comment, and gripped his shoulder. Not only did bones crack on the first squeeze, but the pain brought him down to his knees.
âSay that again, if you dare.â
She kicked him in the stomach, throwing him back into a pillar. She grabbed his hair, and looked into his eyes.
âYou will only wake up when I say so.â She said hypnotically, compelling him into unconsciousness. She couldnât say how long it would last, but every second he wasnât trying to kill Piya was worth the effort.
Iolanda left Abhay lying on the floor and walked towards the kitchen, holding her hand out to Piya. Piya slowly emerged, carrying Vihaan in her arms. Iolanda smiled, and handed her a small glass vial from her pocket, along with a note.
Drink this. It is a vervain extract. It will make your blood smell unappetizing for a few hours. We hope to return him to normal by then.
Piya nodded, and uncapped the bottle. She smiled a little as Vihaan tried to grab it as a plaything, and emptied the entire contents in a few gulps. She made a face at the taste, and Iolanda made a slight face at her. Her scent changed rapidly.
âThat seems to be working. Now, for AbhayâŠâ
Seraphina came back upstairs with a healed Siddharth, the latter also making a face at the change in Piyaâs scent.
âIs that vervain?â He asked, pressing the back of his hand under his nose. Iolanda nodded. âAnd Abhay? Heâs unconscious again.â
âAlways respect your eldersâŠ,â she huffed. âHe shouldnât wake up for a while, if my compulsion was effective enough to settle him in this state.â
She placed his arm over her shoulder and dropped him onto the couch. Seraphina loomed over him and placed her hands on her hips, with a look of confusion.
âIs our soul snatcher simply too powerful for even Piya to nullify the dark magic? She touched him, right?â She said, looking at Siddharth.
Siddharth nodded, crossing his arms.
âSeveral times.â
âWhere was he afflicted then? Maybe itâs internal? His blood perhaps.â
Seraphina acted on her hunch and took out a small pocket knife, then cut it into his palm. Piya rushed over to see what they were doing to him and wanted to pull Seraphinaâs hand away before Iolanda stopped her. Instead, she guided Piyaâs fingers onto the open cut. It glowed a bright white for a few seconds, and when it faded, the cut was healed as well. Piya breathed a sigh of relief. She had a feeling it worked.
âThe magic was acting like a poison it seems, but we will only know if heâs back to normal when he wakes up.â
Piya sat on the floor next to the sofa, holding his hand gently. With others in the same room, surely it would be okay to sit beside him, right?
She smoothed his hair and kissed his temple. As the night carried on, only Siddharth remained in the living room with them. Something had happened at the palace, calling for the attention of their two guests. Piya had since fallen asleep, under a blanket she fetched from their room.
Abhay soon opened his eyes. His nose burned just a little, with an unpleasant scent. He turned his head, and found Piya. It was coming from her.
IâmâŠ.home.
His head hurt while trying to fill in the gaps in his memory. The taste of her blood lingered in his tongue. He pressed a palm to his forehead, as the memories came rushing forth with pain. Even after what he had done, she still clutched his bracelet in her hand.
How could I?
He felt it too when he was drinking from her, the fading light from his own body. Nearing death together. He turned onto his side and brushed her locks away from her eyes, which woke her up. There was a momentary shiver from her body.
Sheâs afraidâŠ
Dejected and angry at himself, he lay on his back again and avoided looking at her. Piya gathered herself and took his hand, slipping the bracelet on his wrist. Her fingers danced near his temples, clearing the throbbing headache instantly. He looked at her and took her hands, showering them with kisses. She smiled while her eyes drooped, and cupped his cheek.
Iâm sorry, Piya. Iâm so sorry.
She shook her head and helped him sit up. She missed his scent. It already made her feel better. He hesitated, but returned her embrace. That gentle heartbeat that thumped against his chest calmed him. But she still smelled odd.
Is thatâŠvervain?
Yes. Iolanda gave it to me to make me smell unappetizing.
Donât say it like thatâŠ
He let go, unable to keep her close without burning his nose off. He looked across the room, seeing Siddharth playing with Vihaan at the dining table. The latter knew Abhay was awake, but avoided interfering unless necessary. He messaged Seraphina saying that Abhay was back to himself from cursory glance.
How are you feeling?, he asked her, even as he lay as the weaker of the two.
Iâm okay. What happened to you? Where did you go?
Ayushmaan took me with him. He used me to seize power for himself, and I donât know what became of Maithili.
She called me to the palace to bargain for your freedom. I saw it happen, but I ran. There was a big storm cloud and it justâŠ.consumed her. Aunty and Mandu went with the rest of the clan to see if sheâs still there.
I doubt it. But itâs worth checking.
They sat in silence for a while. Piya played with Abhayâs hair, smoothing out his locks. He looked very weak after his blood was purified. Sunken cheeks, hollowed eyes, and pale as a ghost. At least the wounds had healed.
I think you should stay away from me for a little longer. What if I hurt you again?
Piya shook her head, and traced his cheeks with her finger. She didnât want to listen. He closed his eyes. Dawn was approaching, and he was exhausted. Piya took his hand and entwined their fingers, stroking his hair with the other. At last he looked to be at peace, even if it was for a short while.
Wow that's interesting chapter, Good abhay is back waiting for more.
Chapter 104
See You Later
âYou thought I would be gone, didnât you?â
Maithili turned her head, still lying in the grass. The land was barren and quiet, aside from the occasional buzz of insects flying and crawling around her. Moving her palms back, she pushed herself up. The wind blew her dark locks over her face, but that couldnât hide the playful malice in her eyes. Haseena gestured some of the clan forward, a subtle order to capture Maithili before she vanished.
âGo ahead. Take me. I have nothing to give you anyways.â She said, lifting her arms to be bound willingly. But when they took steps forward towards capturing her, Mandu held her arm out and shook her head.
âWait.â
âBut Mandââ Haseena said, before Mandu cut her off again. She sighed and gestured her hand. âCareful now.â
Mandu stared at Maithili for a few moments. One could say her aura felt different, or that it was missing altogether. Her expression and the look in her eyes reminded her of their childhood, moments when playing games or dueling one another and she had been the loser. Anger with a smile.
âStill afraid of me? Of this?â She sneered, gesturing at herself. âThereâs no need. Any one of you can overpower me in a second. Iâm not what I used to be.â
Mandu looked around, and at the ground. The grass and dirt had a strange swirled pattern, centering at where Maithili was now sitting. Her physical weakness was evident, though she had her doubts.
âWhat happened here? Piya said she came to see you.â
âShe did. And she left. Left with her tail between her legs.â She paused, and looked away. A glistened tear ran down her cheek. âAnd he left me with nothingâŠâ
Her voice was low, but Mandu heard it just fine. She walked up right next to her, and kneeled.
âWho left you with nothing?â
Maithili turned and laughed. Days ago she could make these people fear her, now she was falling apart in front of them.
âYou know who, didi. Ayushmaan.â The laughing got louder, and more deranged. Her hair covered most of her face again, and through the gaps her eyes shined like she had nothing to lose. âMaybe I should have listened to you back then. You did warn me, after all.â
Mandu stared at her, conflicted. Centuries of dormant rage started to break through her expressionless face. It sounded like a half-baked apology, not a genuine bout of remorse or regret. The woman in front of her ruined everything they had, but was she completely to blame? Ayushmaan did have a hand in manipulating her, but everyone who died, died because she wanted them too.
It doesnât matter.
Manduâs hand reached out, and swiftly grabbed Maithili by the throat, lifting her into the air. She wondered if she could finish the job right then and there. One more tight squeeze, and she wouldnât speak ever again. Her nails dug into her throat and made it bleed. She saw Maithiliâs eyes roll back as she kicked and struggled to breathe. It didnât deter her hand from loosening.
âLeave her be.â A voice boomed behind them, belonging to Dragomir. Mandu ignored it, and had to be forcibly separated from Maithili after some waiting. The latter fell to the ground, knees scraped and neck bruised and wounded. She coughed and wheezed, looking at the shoes that appeared underneath her eyes.
The council was there, along with others from the Circle, surrounding Maithili on all sides. Haseena pulled Mandu back, recalling the last time this ritual was done. Her time was up. She looked up, and smirked.
âYou must be so happy catching me this easilyâŠ,â she muttered, tilting her head from side to side. âI was looking forward to a grand battle, but it must not be my fate. Maybe he will finish what I started instead.â
She looked at Mandu, as the seal on the ground began to illuminate under Seraphinaâs guidance. It forced Maithili on her back and trapped her against the soil, magic binding her wrists and ankles like coils. Mandu wasnât there the first time this happened, nor did she have any qualms about the fact. Even now, she just stared blankly at the wiccan conducting their spells and the hovering, warded dagger above her chest. Maithili just laughed and stared at her, like a woman gone insane. She knew when the spell was to end from the first time she âdiedâ, taking her with it, and yelled out to the woman she once looked up to and admired.
âBye, didi. Maybe weâll get along better next time.â
Mandu didnât reply, and shut her eyes when the sound of knife cutting flesh echoed in her ears. She didnât want to cry, but her heart insisted to shed a lone tear for the beautiful memories they once shared.
Maybe next time.
Her soul was to be sealed until Ayushmaan and the Vitael were defeated, then released without worrying of her ever coming back. This was a mistake they had to rectify.
The body went up in flames, the soul was captured, and the name Maithili faded into a gruesome history once again. Mandu was the last one standing, somewhere grateful that she passed without much commotion around them. In a twisted peace.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Abhay felt much better after getting some rest. He stared up at the ceiling, then at Piya. She had fallen asleep next to him, curled up against his frame. Her hair fell over her cheeks, shrouding her face from the moonlight shining through the window behind the couch. Sometimes she shivered and pulled back when he moved, her heartbeat accelerating, as if she were still afraid of him even when she said she wasnât. He sighed, and sat up. His head pounded, and he pressed a palm to it, leaning back against the couch. The headaches came and went every so often.
âFeeling better now?â Siddharth asked, handing him a filled goblet. He took caution on emptying it, holding Piyaâs hand gently as to deter himself from acting out again. Her normal scent was coming back, with hints of vervain left. Every sip he took made him more observant towards the underlying smell of her blood.
He took a deep breath, or two, and set the empty goblet on the table.
âI suppose so.â
He touched Piyaâs cheek with his index finger to calm her from a stir. The bracelet adorned his wrist again after weeks of absence. She mustâve put it back on him when he was asleep. He missed wearing it; it made him feel like she was with him even when she wasnât. He stood up, and carefully lifted her into his arms, deciding to take her upstairs. The couch was not the most comfortable place to sleep. Siddharth followed behind, hands in his pockets.
âWhat?â He said, as Abhay turned back to glare at him.
âI wonât hurt her.â The latter snarled.
âAnd I canât be too sure about that.â
Siddharth leaned against the door frame and looked away, as Abhay carefully tucked her in and let her sleep for the hour. Abhay leaned down and kissed her forehead and cheeks, brushing away her hair from her beautiful eyes. At least she didnât recoil from his touch anymore.
Sometimes I feel like âusâ was a mistake.
Yet he didnât want to budge. Every moment apart was agonizing, and he wanted that togetherness back with interest. He sat next to her on the bed, playing with her hair while staring out the window in front of him. The moon seemed dull tonight, despite the immense power it bestowed.
She tugged on his sleeve, sleepily looked at him and rubbed her eyes. His heart melted seeing her like this. She looked adorable.
You can sleep more if you want.
She shook her head, and pulled his hand to her cheek. He couldnât resist and leaned down, hovering over her face, lips just inches apart. The door creaked shut behind them, and footsteps faded rather quickly from earshot. Abhay touched their lips together, testing boundaries, and they melted as one when Piya wrapped her arms around his neck. His arms cradled her head and hooked around her waist, pulling her up and deepening the kiss until she ran out of breath.
We have to go. Now.
The kiss broke. Siddharth ushered the warning in Abhayâs head and he immediately let go. Piya looked at him with concern, and took his hand. Just then, a blue light flashed outside, blinding them temporarily. Abhay felt a chill run down his spine. He remembered what that force was. He was there the last time, though he didnât watch it directly.
Let me come too, Piya insisted. Abhay nodded and entwined their hands, running out and leaving the remaining clan members to watch the mansion and little Vihaan, who was napping in Siddharthâs room. Realizing she couldnât run at the same speed as them, he lifted her in his arms. Luckily the palace wasnât too far from there.
Hold on tight.
Piya nodded, and they were off. She felt the wind in her face as he ran. It was so fast. She tightened her hold around Abhayâs shoulders, trees flying by in rapid speed. It began to sting her eyes, so she turned and buried her face in Abhayâs sweater.
Just a little longer.
She felt him slow down once the trees began to part to the old gardens. was in sight, but nothing besides it was there. No one was there. Siddharth lifted his nose. Burned into the grass nearby was a seal Abhay recognized. His eyes widened, unable to believe for a moment that it was true.
âThey killed Maithili.â He said, setting Piya down on her feet, then kneeling to examine the pattern. It was the very same spell. If only he could feel the same kind of relief he felt back then.
Is she gone? Forever?, Piya asked, looking confused. Abhay turned and nodded. She didnât know what to do with this confirmation. It seemed sudden and not what she expected. Was there a clash, or had it ended quietly? Yet her heart couldnât rest. It only beat faster.
Siddharth paused and looked at the burned grass marking, and furrowed his brows.
âThey killed her, and just left? That doesnât seem right. Where did they go?â Siddharth said, looking around. âMandu and mom didnât come back to the mansion.â
âIâm not sure either.â
He took a step forward and suddenly everything went dark. He felt a drag around him. In a flash, a scent was gone from his vicinity and he wasnât at the palace anymore. The cold and musty smell surrounded him. It was reminiscent of the place Ayushmaan kept him captive, except more spacious.
âPiya?!â
His hand was empty, and her scent only lingered on his clothes. It was dark, but there were other scents around that he knew. Siddharth was right next to him.
Siddharth? Are you okay?
Yeah. Where are we?
They couldnât even see each other, despite their better eyesight. And back at the palace, Piya found herself alone, finding the land quiet and both brothers missing. She frantically turned around and around but nothing changed about her situation. The old palace loomed and intimidated her, as did the recent deathbed of its young princess. She stepped away from the seal, and shivered. A bout of deja vu.
Where did they-?
She backtracked, and ran towards home. Vihaan was alone, she had a feeling.
