The biggest tragedy is that Kanchan is also a victim of patriarchy. Kanchan's struggles are overlooked because of her personality. Without a doubt, the way she chose to deal with it was wrong. Wouldn't it have been lovely if she and Aru came together and supported each other but I bet she didn't have that example around her to follow. She behaved the way she saw her mother-in-law, and other women of her generation, behave with her daughter-in-law.
Appa does right to stand by Aru but that doesn't make him a saint either. The way he has behaved with Kanchan in the past and the constant comparison he makes between Vishakha and Aru is a testement to that. Sadly, he doesn't admit it. You can do right by one person but wrong another. I was really interested to see Avinash's story unfold slowly with a bit of nuance because that would have shown Appa in a different light and how he also had a part to play in shaping Aniruddh. But the makers did a dirty on us and rushed it all.
It's interesting that Appa's family bought into the attractiveness of the submissive daughter in law; with the intention that she would be a good homemaker. But look what that did to the family and Aru. I wonder, had Kanchan chosen someone like Neelima or Sanjana, or Aniruddh chosen a girl of his choice, Kanchan's world view may have changed a lot sooner and this family may have been a lot different.
Of course, this does not excuse Anirrudh and Kanchan or put the entire onus on the daughter in law. The makers are trying to show us the good vs. the bad but I can't see that it's as black and white.
