That is the point Midnight - he is completely blind to the effect Malini's harkatein had on Imlie - the guy actually told Imlie that agar bure bhi hain toh tumhare pati hai. For him, however he is, no one should ever wish for him to be separate from Imlie - least of all his own mom.
See this is where he is confused - when she actually had the choice to leave him and also had a valid reason for it - after he deleted the evidence, tab woh nahi gayi when he asked her to stay.
Now according to him when he is only trying to get the gist of the whole situation from her, Imlie's reaction to that question astounds him. He is not able to comprehend that when she could stay with him despite his worst actions, why a simple question brought out such a reaction from Imlie.
What he is not able to understand was that this was months of build up that was needing an outlet to phodo, and Adi's question just lit that bomb for it to burst like that.
I still maintain - Imlie's problem is not Malini living in that house or the upcoming baby - her issue was that her being there was prompting her to escalate her actions to the extent that her family was suffering the consequences of Malini's obsession - she wanted Adi to believe her that Malini has become deranged enough to harm the child and their family, including doing something with Adi that will hurt him - she wants to only protect the family, warna toh Malini is supposed to be her badi behan🤪 - She is as deluded as Adi is in terms of maintaining her relationship with DD.
