Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to this debate.
The motion for debate today is: Feminism through the eyes of sai and anokhi, we represent team sai
Merriam Webster’s dictionary describes resilience as an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.
Sai joshi a young adult brought up by a single father in the small town of Gardchiroli to goes through her own sets of challenges from a young age, what sets her apart is her ability to take on challenge’s heads on. She is tenacious towards the things she loves, fierce, honest, altruistic, sedulous, righteous and hardworking. She grew up watching her father, who in a true sense was a feminist, raising a child on his own without getting married again and still juggling his duty as a police officer while giving her the values that make her the woman she is.
Faced with many challenges since a young age, she has overcome each one with her head held high, be it the times when she was molested by a local goon to kidnapped into forcefully getting married to the same, she has fought with all her might regardless of what the situation… There are many such instances she has been faced with even post her marriage but the one which stands out the most was her resilience and motivation to spring back post her father’s demise. Her father who was her entire world sacrificed his life for his student Virat Chavan who later took on the responsibility of Sai as her husband and guide.
The day Sai lost her father, her entire existence shattered to pieces, she had never seen a world without her father, her abba, who was much more than a parent. he was a teacher, philosopher, guide, and friend.
With no one to lean on, she lost her hope in that moment of weakness, as every individual is. We all have our weaknesses and strengths; some are good at fighting them heads on yet sometimes succumb to the pain. The loss and void she felt by the death of her father left a deep mark in her soul. In that moment all she could think was to be close to her father, and hence she took the decision of taking her own life….
Was it a wrong decision, perhaps, but what is one to do when their entire existence, their world comes crumbling down, what does an 18 year old do when her whole life is shattered in that one moment and she has no one to lean on?
But destiny always has other plans, and we have Virat come in to save her, he promised her father he would take care of her and he does. He reminds her of her dream that she shared with her father of becoming a doctor and how her father would feel if she were to take a step as she did, how hurt would he be. Sai understands and apologizes to her father for taking the step and promises to never repeat it, to fulfill their dream of her becoming a doctor. .
It isn’t easy though, she has no one and is forced by the villagers to agree to get married to Virat So that he can take her responsibility with all the rights. Sai though adamant to not marry gives in as a deal, she is very clear in her stance the reason to marry him is so that she can fulfill her dreams and become a doctor and once that goal is fulfilled, she will leave.
She gets married and goes into a completely new household, with individuals she has never met and does not know well enough. The road here is not easy, full of challenges, as she enters the house, she is met with unacceptance from Virat’s family, the only one to accept her with all their heart being his mother who she goes on to fondly call aai. Her first night in Chavan Niwas is full of tears and memories of her father, holding his photo close to her heart she cries her heart out, talking to him but reminding him she will not fall weak, she will fight back for their dream.
Her goal now was only to complete her education and become the best doctor a dream her father saw for her which she shared with him.
People who possess this quality don't see life through rose-colored lenses; they understand that setbacks happen and that sometimes, life is hard and painful. They still experience the negative emotions that come after a tragedy, but their mental outlook allows them to work through these feelings and recover.
She takes time to adjust but her vivacious personality, selfless, diligent, and headstrong nature helps her overcome these challenges and slowly fill the void in her life. She has the ability to find happiness by the simplest pleasures of life, someone smiling at her, standing by her, supporting her that is all that she needs. She does not need anyone to fight her battles, she is enough for herself yet she finds solace in the company of another. The Void left be abbas demise slowly is replaces by the love she starts developing for Virat, Aai, and Devyani (virat’s cousin) who becomes like her own sister. She stands by them as they do for her. She finds happiness in small late-night conversations with virat, talking about her dreams, aspirations, goals. This helps her fight through her weakness.
She holds many characteristics a resilient person shows for example- she has a positive view of her abilities and she shows when she visits the DIG to save Virat’s job introducing herself not by her husband’s name but by her achievement of topping the 12th board in maha
She possesses the capacity to make realistic plans, has an internal locus of control which is time and again shown by how she fights for her rights to her education despite the opposition, she will do anything to fulfill her dreams.
A good communicator where she will tell the person who is close to her whatever is in her heart. An honest answer like she does with Virat, she isn’t scared to be upfront about her views and thoughts and will tell him clearly what is on her mind.
She has an extremely high emotional intelligence and can manage her emotions well. Yes at times she falters but that is a human nature we all possess which with time we overcome. Most importantly she views herself as a fighter, not as a victim. She understands that life is to throw us with challenges in every step in the way but what defines our true character is how we deal with those challenges, either we succumb and become the victim, or we rise above and fight head-on!
Her growth over the months from the loss of her father has indeed been remarkable, despite innumerable challenges life has thrown her, she has stayed grounded. She fostered healthy stress managing skills which helped her in these challenges in turn making her stronger and helping her grow as an individual. This does not eliminate the challenges or stress in life but helps her overcome the adversity!
To conclude I would like to quote Sai “Khushiyan dhundne se milti h ... Log bdi bdi khushiyon k chakkar me choti choti khushiyaan kho dete hai par main aisa nai krti”
Thank you
I had edited this to fit the time frame but this is the first draft on which i based my entire argument!
