Chapter 63
Photo
âWhich photo is your favorite, Piya?â
The girls invited themselves over to Piyaâs place, as usual of their weekend hangouts, gearing towards her upcoming birthday on February 10th. Piya knew this day would come, where she had more than just her uncle to celebrate with.
When it was just her and Sugandh, the latter used to take Piya on an outing, and then by the time they got home, the cake would arrive. Sugandh always played âHappy Birthdayâ on the violin and sang as best she could, and Piya would always listen and dance from start till end. One of the things Sugandh left her, was an old cassette tape with the recording of it. Piya always made sure to play it on her birthday. It brought back to mind memories she cherished.
I wish you could have met everyone, mumma.
She didnât make too much of a fuss over her birthday after Sugandhâs death, but she never missed celebrating it. This year would be all the more special, with all the new bonds she had forged.
âHmm....this one? But itâs hard to pick just one.â
Pictures of her and Sugandh were laid over the rug. Misha reached for the one Piya pointed out, and held it up for a closer look. Ideas for a perfect gift were not hard to come by. She already knew what she was to gift her, a painted version of one of these photos, hence the viewing. One Piya could hang on the wall and admire whenever she walked into the room.
Sorry Piya, Iâll return this soon...., she thought.
When Piya was attending to a text, she slipped it into her bag. Ruhi tried to question her motives, but Misha shushed her. Their hushed bickering alerted the soon-to-be birthday girl. Piya looked up.
âWhat happened?â
âNothing! Nothing at all.....â Misha exclaimed, sitting straight up and shoving her bag behind her. She saw Piya messaging someone, and diverted the conversation.
âWhoâs texting you? Is it your boyfriend?â
She lifted her eyebrows suggestively. Piya lifted her hand, gesturing a playful slap.
âAll his fans at the college are so jealous of you. T must be livid.â Ruhi said, thinking of all the gossip and chatter in the halls. It was a hot topic for the students.
âT can eat a shoe. Only Piya could pull off the impossible.â
âImpossible?â Piya inquired.
âYou know, getting anything affectionate out of that man. I think my brain exploded when he asked you to dance.â
She sighed, and accepted that there wasnât going to be much improvement between Abhay and the others. He was eager to finish the degree and not have to step foot on campus again, except for trustee duties, which were sparse to begin with.
âOkay no more jokes. Has he planned anything?â
Piya shook her head.
âEven if he did, I wouldnât know. It would likely be a surprise.â
Piya only knew this, because he was making a visible effort to not speak of her birthday directly. At first she thought it was because he wasnât interested in birthdays like his own, but Mandu let her in on conversations she had with him, about gifts. Piya pretended not to know, and saw right through his messages. It was cute, seeing him flustered.
âHow romantic.â Ruhi gushed. She for one liked how they looked as a couple. Misha pretended to gag. âEw Misha....â
âWhat? I donât get all the fuss with romance.â
âMaybe youâll see when you fall in love with someone.â Ruhi said.
âYeah right. Romance and Misha Dobriyal donât mix.â
Piya gathered the photos from the floor and arranged them into a neat stack, placing them on the table. Mishaâs phone buzzed, and upon seeing who messaged, she let out an exasperated sigh.
âWhat happened?â
It took her a second to read it all.
âSammy has been on edge for the past week. Like a short fuse. Small things are setting him off. Like this.â
She showed them the wall of text. Something about running out of shampoo. Once they had read it all, she turned off her phone and shoved it into her bag.
âIs that normal?â
âWhen heâs really stressed about something, then yes, itâs normal. He wonât even say what happened, and it canât be because of that stupid vase.....â
âVase.....?â
âYeah, at the gala. He was coming back from the bathroom I think, and broke one of the hotelâs vases on accident. We paid for the damages and ended the matter there, but heâs been acting weird since.â
Piya huddled her knees closer and felt her heart beating out of her chest. That same bad feeling took over.
That was the same vase, but no one was there. Which meant he fled the scene? But why?
She had a lingering feeling that it had to do with her.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
Misha set aside the rest of the day to begin work on the painting. With fresh refills of her paints and some new brushes in her possession, she was ready to give Piya one of the best gifts ever.
She tossed a smaller plastic bag full of shampoo and other household items she picked up on the way. Sameer was in the kitchen. She peeked her head in and said loudly.
âCheck the bag on the dining table.â
He looked back, and didnât say anything. Misha left the area by then anyways.
âPapa, Iâm going into my studio! Make sure no one comes in!â
âAlright, Misha.â Arnab called, watching her rush upstairs. He straightened the newspaper and watched Sameer walk past with a furrow in his brow.
He never stresses over office work. What else could happen?
Arnab asked the same question once every day, for the past week. In different forms, and indirectly, in a way that his son would say something. Anything except that he was fine, because he clearly wasnât.
Sameer opened up to Madhu more easily than him, but she was out for the day. He had to make the effort more direct.
âSameer, is everything okay?â
He looked up.
âYes, papa. Why do you ask?â
He tossed the shampoo bottle up in the air a couple times and caught it with one hand. Relaxed. A bait to make Arnab feel nothing was wrong.
I for sure canât tell you, papa.
âYouâve been looking stressed since the night of the gala. Are you feeling well? Shall I call a doctor?â
âIâm fine. Just office stress maybe. I think Iâll rest for a bit.â
Hearing office stress convinced him that something was fishy, but he decided to wait before prying again. Sameer wouldnât say more, he knew from experience.
âThat sounds like a good idea. Take as much rest as you need to. Iâll make sure no one disturbs you.â
âThanks, papa.â
Sameer went up to his room, putting the shampoo bottle away. He looked out the door again, smelling fresh paint. Mishaâs studio door was partially open. He felt bad for the text he sent earlier, and peeked in with a knock.
âMan....I told papa not to let anyone in.....â she grumbled. Her tone changed when she caught eye of her brother. âOh hey Sammy....â
âOff limits?â
He seems better than before.
âYes sir. I have to finish this before the 10th.â
âI see.â
He scratched the back of his head, and stood behind her.
âLook Mish, Iâm sorry. I got a little heated in a simple text.â
âItâs okay. But if thereâs something bothering you, just tell me. We share lots of things with each other, right? Whether theyâre good or bad.â
âYeah....â
But he couldnât share this one thing with her. And he cursed the situation for it.
âWhy the 10th?â
âItâs Piyaâs birthday. And this is a gift. But donât tell her. Iâm trying to keep it a surprise.â
He looked at the blank canvas, and array of clean brushes. Then at a photo, laid upside down. Piyaâs name irked him more than ever now, but he couldnât show that to Misha.
âI wonât. What exactly are you painting?â
She stared at the photo for a few moments.
âFine, Iâll tell you. But only you.â
She handed it to him. His heart pounded, hoping what he heard back in the hotel was a trick of the ears. Hand trembling, he took the photo and turned it over.
There had been no trick. That woman, it was her. Same features as the one he had seen in the torn up photo that he possessed.
âIsnât it cute?â
â.....yes.â
He gave it back, and checked the door.
âPromise me you wonât tell a soul. Not even our parents.â
Misha stuck out her pinky. This was the easiest promise he had to make in a long time.
âPromise â he replied, hooking his pinky with hers.
Aha what is sameer going to do

Chapter 64
Warning
âThis is the place...â
Though places like these were sure to attract sightseers, it was empty this evening. Piya looked below, expecting something different but finding forest all the same. Though, it would be a nice place to watch the sunset.
She looked down the road, then at the messages from an unsaved number. The one she was to meet was late, which seemed out of character.
Is this the right spot?
She decided to wait, sitting down on one of the wooden benches, and stared at the sky. Her heart wouldnât stop pounding in her ears.
Five minutes later, a car screeched to a halt on the side of the road. Piya stood up and turned around.
Please end this quickly.
Sameer slammed the door shut, and walked to her with a unsettling stare. The letter lay crumpled and buried in his back pocket. Piya couldnât meet eyes with him, and clutched the strap of her bag. The air filled with traces of hostility.
âWhy did you call me here?â
He didnât answer, examining her closely. The answer to her own question dwelled in her own eyes, of the one person who connected them. He pulled out the letter.
âA simple reason. Read this, and youâll understand.â
She did. Simply holding it felt familiar. Like a lost memory.
Mummaâs handwriting....
Sugandh used to write to Arnab whenever he went on his long business trips. Now that Piya knew those trips werenât always for business, it made sense that one of those letters was found by someone else in that house. The breaking point. It was torn to pieces, held together by tape that begun to peel by the corners. The contents by themselves were lighthearted, innocent, written simply by a spouse who was missing their partner.
In his hands, it was incriminating.
âI always wished that Iâd never run into you. Looks like my luck isnât so reliable.â He paused. âStay away from my family. Especially Misha.â
Piya looked up in shock.
âMishaâ-What are you saying?â
Sameer looked away. He didnât want to see his baby sister know the pain of their fatherâs past mistakes. It would be worse than losing a friend, he believed.
âI know what I said, Piyashree Jaiswal.â
He took her full name with such malice that even she felt disgust upon hearing it.
âMy family almost fell apart that day, when this letter came to light. Mumma was so angryâ-â
Piya saw where the blame was to fall, and shouted back.
âMy mother and I are innocent. Your father betrayed us too. I didnât even know that he had another family here. Is my pain, is that betrayal not proof of that?â
He scoffed, and shoved his hands into his pockets.
âSure, Iâll give you the benefit of the doubt. What about your mother? How can you say for sure she didnât knoââ
Piya slapped him hard across the face. She knew her own mother well; she would never try to break someoneâs marriage.
âNever say a word about my mother again!â
She was angry, and that anger was producing tears.
âI have no interest in joining your family. But that doesnât mean Iâll sacrifice my friendship with Misha.â
âYou wish to hurt her when she finds out the truth?â
âHas she found out yet? No right? And she never will.â
âPeople make mistakes. Whatâs to say you wonât?â
âIf I do, Iâll take full responsibility for what happens afterwards. Happy?â
âNo. Iâm not happy. Just stay away, itâs for your own good.â
Heâs threatening me...
He shirked her away and stormed off. Piya watched him leave, weathering an intense rage and sadness inside her heart. She pitied Sameer, who had been caught in the crossfire of their fatherâs actions. But what had she and Sugandh done wrong?
We were kept in the dark as much as you and Madhu aunty were.
And Misha was blissfully unaware.
She gripped the bench arm, and stared at the ground, as her tears fell and created tiny craters in the soil. She didnât want to move from there. If only the wind could break her into dust and let her fly without notice.
To just disappear.
A soft pair of hands then cupped her cheeks. The most familiar, from that person who promised to be at her side forever. This had happened before, and for the same reason. She looked up as the hands lifted her face, seeing his worry. He ran his thumbs over her tears.
âAbhay....â
She threw her arms around him and wept profusely. There was nothing more she wanted in this moment but to hear his voice, but he didnât say anything. Something felt off, even his body felt strange after his first touch. It felt like he was falling apart instead of her.
âAbhay?â
A light surrounded them, and he began to fade. She knew then, that it was just an illusion. The rings of the light rose higher and higher, hiding her, like a curtain, from the outside. She tried to move past it, but her limbs met rock. A beautiful, ethereal prison. The sky looked to be closer, the scent in the air began to change, and the outside became inside. It was a bricked ceiling, hoisting a massive chandelier. The cage faded open from around her, and she was dropped onto a marble floor. She landed hard, and clutched her left knee in pain. The skin began to bruise, and bleed just a little.
Hisses and snarls. Fast footsteps.
The wound made the vampires in the room hungry. Some even had their fangs out. Piya crawled backwards on the floor, terrified. Witness to those vampires who werenât as gentle nor forgiving, ready to tear out her throat over just one drop of blood, one small cut.
She backed into a stone pillar, where simple footsteps frightened them into submission. By the wave of this manâs hand, a barrier was forged between them and her, surrounding the room like a ring.
âIncited by the slightest of blood? Have you all forgotten your training?â
Piya looked at the man who spoke. To her left, Seraphina stood boxed in behind a glass-like barrier. Her voice was cut off as well, but her eyes were wide with both anger and fear.
âWho are you? Where am I?â
âThe manor of the First Family. Iâm sure you must be aware of my familyâs history. Or....did Abhay leave that part out?â
Piya froze and swallowed nervously. She had taken Abhayâs name out loud. And one of the vampires here issued the order for her memory to be wiped.
They probably knew. The pretense was falling apart.
âMy name is Dragomir. Head of The Circleâs main council.â
He sat in a chair before her, hands folded in his lap and legs crossed. He didnât think Abhay would be foolish enough, or perhaps bold enough, to showcase their relationship out in the open with his spies watching.
Such an foolish show of âloveâ. You carelessly risked the life of your little pet with such a stunt.
âWhy do you think Iâve brought you here?â
Piya shifted her eyes. She was alone.
âHeâs not here....so something he wonât like.â
âPerceptive, arenât you?â
He stood up, hands behind his back, and circled her like a vulture. With no hesitation, he picked her up by the throat and squeezed. It looked like no pressure was applied, but Piya could feel her windpipe closing.
âI didnât think your memory could return on its own....â
âPlease....let....go....â
Piya felt the light in her eyes fading. Her lungs hurt. After bringing her as close to death as possible, he dropped her back on the floor. She coughed and held her throat, now imprinted with red marks of his fingers.
âHave your eyes opened?â He gestured around, to the recovering vampires. âHe is just like us. And you, just a fragile human being.â
She wanted to defend him, but it hurt to immediately speak.
âHe has.....never...hurt me.â
âNot yet, he hasnât. Iâm sure that day isnât far.â
He moved forth to intimidate her again, but then his guest arrived, throwing the doors open with force. The timing couldnât have been worse.
âUp to no good again, Dragomir?â
Piya looked up at her savior, someone she could recognize by voice and face.
Abhayâs creator....?
She turned back, and smiled. The flashbacks did little justice to how beautiful she was in person.
âYou know who I am. Iâm flattered.â
Iolanda fixed her hair and threatened the other vampires with just her eyes. They all scurried away to their chambers, leaving the two siblings, Seraphina, and Piya in the room.
âMay I have a chat with you? Regarding this matter?â
She stretched out her palm, and shattered the cage that imprisoned Seraphina. The latter looked relieved to not have to scream without anyone hearing anymore.
âSera, take care of this lovely girl for me.â
âOf course.â
She whisked Piya away to another room immediately, and shut the doors tight. Now it was just the two ancient vampires in the room.
They were six siblings total, these original vampires. But on many occasions, they looked less as siblings and more as rivals. Distance, jealousy, power, it all worked to sour bonds.
âI hear my second Duralis is causing trouble. In the form of that girl.â
âYour nature mustâve have passed to him when you turned him. Rebellious, and hopeless.â
âAt least heâs trying to make this life interesting. Seems like you could benefit from an experience like it.â
Dragomir and Iolanda sat on opposite ends of the massive living room, staring each other down, shooting daggers with their eyes.
âAnd no need to critique my personality, golden child,â she continued. âI can say much more about yours.â
He laughed and stretched his arms over the sofa. The tone changed very rapidly, not like it was something surprising. Attendants brought out goblets of blood for the both of them.
âI didnât tell our mother to give me more of attention than the rest of you.â
âSure, letâs believe it so.â
He beckoned forth his spies, and projected an image of Abhay and Piya together. Iolanda took great interest.
âHow sweet. Unlike this drink you serve.â
She knocked over her goblet onto his floors, staining the cashmere rug.
âOops...I hope it wasnât too expensive.â
The same attendants rushed in to clean. Dragomir scowled and ignored her taunts.
âYouâre the last one to talk sense into him. Thatâs why I called you.â
âWhy me? Haseena took him in, remember?â
âShe wonât be of help, and you know that.â
âAnd that makes me helpful? What makes you think Iâm going to stop anything?â
âDuty towards your kind? Would you romance a human?â
âPerhaps I could, it sounds like an interesting time. And all I enjoy seeing is your buttons being pushed. Heâs doing a great job.â
He scoffed.
âSera let me in on something far more interesting. That theyâre soulmates, and it can be proven.â
âImpossible. Such a phenomena hasnât been seen for centuries.â
âCenturies isnât that long for us, brother. Itâs seems fitting for Abhay, a connection to humanity that doesnât involve just blood.â
âIâd like to see this proof.â
âAnd if it is true?â
âWeâll see then. For now, I must know.â
âThatâs all it would take, is it? We couldâve saved so much more time and resources had you checked initially. That poor girl....â
Dragomir hated being told how to do things, even when he knew it was wrong. He ignored her words and asked them to return.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
âMy phone....â
Piya wanted to at least tell Abhay she was okay. Seraphina shook her head, spitting out a plastic grape from the fake fruit arrangement on the mantle.
âIt wonât work here. Weâre not in India right now.â
âThen what country?â
âRomania. You know, where vampires are said to come from.â
Piya peered out a window next to the sofa. They were high above ground as well, from what her eyes could discern. Tucked atop the wooded mountains of Transylvania was the manor that the First Family resided in. Hiding in plain site, in the region in which they were born, where myths concerning vampires once grew rampant and spread.
Dracula was just a convenient coverup.
Seraphina cursed her superiors under her breath and examined Piyaâs knee, keeping it still. In a small pouch by her hip, she pulled out a tiny vial of pink liquid and poured it into her palm, where it began to swirl in a ball airborne. She maneuvered it over the knee, and hovered her hands, chanting a spell.
Piya felt instant relief.
âAll good?â
She nodded, and wiped her leg clean with a damp towel. Even the bruising was gone.
âThank you, again.â
âNo need to thank me. Unless you have something to eat around here.â
âI donât....â
Everything not on her immediate person was left behind.
âHe kept me here for questioning in that stupid cage. I swear, his temper is off the charts. Guess whoâs not showing up to meetings for the next month.â
She continued to mumble under her breath. Piya wasnât worried of the injury, but rather of Abhay. She was positive heâd know she was missing by now. But her phone was the barrier.
So Abhay called Seraphina instead.
âAnd there you go, now Iâm going to get yelled at again.â
Seraphina stepped to the side and answered. As she expected, Abhay was furious.
âPiya isâ,â she started.
âI shouldâve known the council would have something to do with this.â
âRelax, sheâs fine. Thank your lucky stars that Iolanda was here to intervene.â
There was a brief silence from his end.
âHello? Iâll bring you here if you want.â
âIâm waiting.â He huffed, hanging up.
She frowned and turned to Piya.
âItâs amazing how he changes around you. Iâll bring him here too.â
It wasnât much of a wait; only a minute or so. The same spell and mechanism brought Abhay to this location as well.
As soon as his feet touched the ground, he went to Piya, both relieved to see the other. But that wasnât enough to calm him down. His anger was so charged that it brought out the red in his eyes. He embraced Piya immediately, formulating plans to get them out of this mess.
âAre you okay?â he asked. He had seen flashes of her injury and attempted choking. Those wounds were gone now.
âIf you joined us earlier, you couldâve healed her yourself, moron.â Seraphina said, rolling her eyes.
He ignored her, and kissed Piyaâs temple, watching the only door. His rage continued to fester in the background.
âThey know....â Piya whispered, holding onto him as tight as she could. She didnât want to lose him under any circumstances.
âI figured as much...â
The doors opened, and the guards were stunned to find an angry Duralis behind the doors. Abhay stared them down, baring his fangs, holding Piya tighter. It wasnât immediately apparent to Piya that his true form was emerging and scaring the living daylights out of all the weaker vampires.
âBring her out. And him as well.â
Seraphina stayed back and hastily gestured them to make their way out. While she hoped things would settle, she didnât want to get involved anymore. Iolanda looked over to Abhay, and her face lit up in triumph, seeing him so protective over Piya.
She kept her greeting until after this matter was solved.
Break a pair of soulmates, brother. I dare you.
It was frowned upon to do so, in supernatural society. She challenged him with a smug look on her face.
Piya felt Abhayâs nails getting sharper and a little longer, colder than ice, clutching her head. In the corner of her eye, she saw wisps of shadow.
He was getting closer and closer to attacking someone.
Abhay, please calm down...., she thought, hoping he would hear. He did, but it was easy to ignore. They kidnapped her, and if Iolanda wasnât there, maybe even killed her by now.
âSheâs quite bold. Look at how she cowers in the arms of death.â
âTouch her, and youâre all dead.â
âAnd how did that go last time? Ah yes, a broken spine?â
Piya panicked, even though a spinal injury wouldnât be deadly to a vampire. Dragomir looked at her in particular.
âA human....with a vampire as a soulmate?â
âWe can easily prove it to you. If thatâs what is needed.â
Seraphina was peeking from the doorframe, but stepped out after a brief chest pain. Abhay looked back at Dragomir, occasionally caressing Piyaâs hair.
âIâm leaving after this. No exceptions.â
Dragomir nodded towards Seraphina, and the latter cast another spell to reveal their souls. The energies danced and entwined, and the fragments that matched the color of the other were the most apparent. Those who were familiar with the intricacies of the soulmate bond stood in awe.
Abhay just wanted to get her out of here.
*How much will you people frighten her?*
âCare to share how her memory returned?â
âNo, we donât. Lest we anger another person, someone who you donât even stand a chance against.â
Piya grasped the hourglass pendant, which by now she realized that only she could see it. Angering Time didnât seem like the best idea in the world.
âI see that you return his feelings strongly. You are fully aware, of what he is, what we are, right?â
The words were of understanding, but the tone was of mocking. She looked up, and nodded firmly.
âI do......and that changes nothing for me.â
She looked up at Abhay, eyes filled with only love and devotion. She trusted him with her life.
âAlright, take that risk. But youâre not the only one you yourself pose a risk to. The secrets of this world.....itâs something humans arenât supposed to know.â
âI wonât tell anyone. I have no reason to. But Iâm not leaving his side. Ever. Even if Iâm taking my last breath tonight.â
Dragomir tapped his foot impatiently.
âOne chance. Should any knowledge of our existence come to light in their world because of her, I will finish what was started here.â
Abhay remained cautious, but nodded. Piya did the same.
âUnderstood? Then get out of my sight.â
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
âWhat an eventful reunion, Abhay.â Iolanda said, leaving her brother to ponder in displeasure inside the manor.
âThank you for arriving on time. I donât know what wouldâve happened.â
âBeen a while since Iâve heard a thank you from anyone. Well, youâre welcome.â
She looked at Piya.
âIâm curious. How did you know who I was?â
âAbhay told me about you.â
âHow touching. My creations still remember my ancient face.â She touched her cheeks for wrinkles.
Seraphina returned, cracking her knuckles.
âIâll send her back from where we picked her up from. Her stuff must be without its owner.â
âI thought you were leaving?â
âYeah, but I feel bad.â
âSend me with her? Itâs the least you can do.â
She rolled her eyes. As if she werenât exhausted already. Any more magic and her body might collapse for the day.
â.....Sure.â
They exchanged goodbyes, and she teleported them back to the peak. Nightfall was approaching, with the chirp of crickets. Piya slowly picked up her bag, but hesitated with the balled up letter next to it. She almost forgot about it. The wind was faster than her fingers, and whisked it over the cliff.
But....you didnât want it, right?
Yet her hand was outstretched towards it. Abhay caught it with ease, and returned it to her. She didnât say anything, crumpled it in her hand, and pressed her forehead into his chest.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, and rested his cheek on her head. There was a lot of things going on in her mind that he was having difficulty reading.
âDo you want to talk about it?â
Sameerâs scent was all over that paper. It seemed like she was here to meet him.
âI...donât have to energy for that right now....,â she murmured, wiping a tear.
He kissed her hair, able to sympathize with the mental toll she was experiencing.
âVery well. Come, Iâll take you home.â
She took his hand, at least relieved that their relationship was not in jeopardy anymore. Now they didnât have to hide it. They could be together.
And she sure as hell wouldnât break a cherished friendship over someone elseâs mistakes.
Good one
