Chapter 62
The Beast Loves Blood
“Just one more bite, please?”
The union of the two souls eventually brought the beast’s introduction to Piya. A man who lurked in the shadows of Abhay’s conscience, eager to take any opportunity to gain control over his meek counterpart. At least he had the courtesy to say please. Dreams like these always placed the two in unexpected locations. This time, they resided in a dimly lit room, atop a round bed draped with silken sheets, surrounded in a circle by flickering candles.
Shades of red and black, blending together in a sensual and dark setting.
Her petite frame was only covered by a silk black sheet, wrapped around to cover up the sensitive places while also exposing the rest, like a bundle of ribbons swirling around a baton. She stared, at the mercy of her beloved vampire. Each fleeting, icy touch of his set her entire body ablaze.
He towered over her, having bitten her thrice already. Twice on either side of her neck and once on the chest. The wounds were raw and sucked dry, yet he wasn’t satisfied. Thankfully, this being a dream meant neither had to worry about him drinking too much.
She nodded eagerly to his request, cradling his head against her belly. He tore into the soft flesh just above her navel, sating his thirst without shame and with greed. The arousal that she vocalized, drove his ambition.
His eyes were cold, blood red orbs, watching her obsessively after letting go. Blood stained his mouth, and dripped from his fangs. He carelessly wiped his lips and licked the blood off the back of his hand.
“You’re so yummy.....” he whispered. “So warm and sweet....”
She cried out his name, mind swirling in and out of a thick haze. Being his prey meant losing hand on herself. She wanted him to do it again.
“More....drink more....” she begged. “Please....”
“I’d love too....”
His fangs met her wrist next.
Another Abhay watched the two a distance away, staring in anger and regret. The beast took note of the visitor, lifting his head and grinning with self-approval, showing off his blood stained teeth.
“Won’t you join us, Mr. goody two shoes? She loves being fed from. I should be thankful, that fate made us soulmates.” He caressed Piya’s hair, as she stared back at him in a trance. “Such a sweet prey. Just for me.”
“Get away from her. Leave.”
“Leave?” He chuckled. “How naive can you be? I’m a part of you, silly boy.” His eyes darkened. Pulling over a black robe over his shoulders, he crossed paths with his more gentler self, crushing his shoulder with a heavy palm. “She is just as much mine as she is yours. Don’t forget, we are one and the same.”
“I’m in control. Not you.”
“Oh really?” He cocked his eyebrows, extending a bloodied palm out. “You’ll let me out sooner or later. I’m not sure if you realize, but it’s incredibly difficult to resist.”

Piya really thought he’d try to be more careful with the nature of their relationship. But in the span of a week, he had revealed it to a good portion of the city with a dance in public, and now she was on a date with him. She didn’t mind this; it only gave them more time to spend with each other.
Dates weren’t his thing, especially after 300 years of relative solitude. Sure, he entertained women for various other reasons, but a genuine date with someone he loved took different approaches. Such things weren’t acceptable in his time either. He thought of all kinds of ideas, but only the most simple of pastimes seemed the best to him. Familiar, and simple. Something he enjoyed doing, and hopefully Piya would too. Hand in hand, they took a walk through the forest, following the bendy paths of the stream.
We met, became friends, and confessed our love, with the forest as witness. The place I once considered a cage has now become our sanctuary.
Piya took to the rocks on the bank and hopped across each one, holding Abhay’s hand tight. From what it seemed, she was enjoying herself. He watched her tenderly.
“Careful. Some of the rocks might be slippery.”
“That’s okay. When have you let me fall anyways?”
He had an excellent track record of breaking her falls, and he wasn’t about to risk sullying it. The dream he saw last night lingering in his thoughts. Luckily, Piya didn’t see it this time. As such, he considered it a warning to himself.
Piya found him lost in thought, and kicked one foot in the water, launching it at him. He dodged it without visible effort.
“Show off.”
Abhay smirked, and squeezed an umbrella in his other fist. He looked up. The clouds rumbled and rolled like tides into each other, and began to blanket the starry night sky. He had a feeling it would rain soon, despite her insistence of the opposite. Piya tried to splash water at him again and looked over with the widest smile on her lips when she partially succeeded.
“What happened?” He asked.
“Nothing. It’s just....really nice here.”
He smiled back, and kissed her hand. Piya stepped down from the rocks and held onto his arm. She leaned her head on his shoulder and watched the few animals scatter when they passed by.
“Don’t you vampires wander here at night? I was expecting to see more.”
“We don’t wander all the time. Most of the time, but not every waking moment. Besides, I kept this area clear for tonight. I don’t want any disturbances.”
“So the clan leader can take his girlfriend out on a date?” She joked.
He hid a laugh and nodded.
“It’s quiet here, and the scenery never gets dull. If I ever want to dwell in my thoughts, or get out of the house, I come take walks here.” He looked at her. “I don’t know if this was what you expected when I suggested a date....”
“It wasn’t, but it’s perfect.”
The clouds rumbled once more. The first drops of rain began to fall, and one upon the tip of her nose. She looked up, just as the rain began to pour, and stuck out her palm face up. Abhay took no time to open the umbrella, but Piya escaped his grasp and ran eagerly in the downpour. He stopped and watched on. Rain and them, he believed it was the first real moment of attraction they had after meeting. But he wanted to remember this one more than the former. Back then, she didn’t have that smile.
“Abhay!” She called.
She looked so sweet, dancing and twirling under the rain. He watched her from under the umbrella, glad to see her so happy. She ran up to him, and grabbed his sleeve, tugging it towards her.
“Piya, you’ll get sick,” he chided.
“You’re such a killjoy sometimes. Have you never, ever played in the rain before?”
He thought about it. If he had, it was certainly too long ago to recall.
“When I was little, sure. I don’t remember it well, though.” He smirked to the side. “Besides, I’m known for being a killjoy around here.”
Piya frowned, then snatched the umbrella from his hands. He brushed her locks aside, trying to read the mischief in her eyes.
“Let’s go.” She pouted, looking down at the soaked dirt path. “I’ll hold the umbrella again.”
“Done?”
“Mmhm.”
But Piya wasn’t just ready to go yet. She wanted him to join her, and they would stay out for as long as it took. She waited, until Abhay let his guard down, and then let go of the umbrella. It bounced on branches and shrubs, flying small distances in the wind. Abhay looked on. As she wanted, he too was drenched.
He glanced at the sky, then at her, and sighed.
“You win.”
She smiled, and clapped her hands in triumph.
“How does it feel?”
“It’s…..nice.”
Cold or not, he couldn’t tell. The umbrella rolled into the bushes behind them, which he retrieved and closed. He trailed Piya, and pinned her to a nearby tree, lifting her chin to meet eyes. The rain made his eyes look even more ethereal than they already were. Crystal droplets coated his lashes, and clear pools of icy grey stared back.
“I don’t recall you being this naughty when we first met. When did this happen?”
“You tell me, Abhay. When did I become like this?” She took back the umbrella from him and held it behind her back. “I’m keeping this. Until the rain stops.”
“So much against an umbrella? I thought girls liked sharing an umbrella with their crush.”
“We already did that. Time for something new.”
He kissed her temple and lifted her into his arms. Piya fumbled with the umbrella as he did so, and hugged it against her chest.
“Nice try. I’m not giving it back.”
“I could have taken it easily, jaan. You know what I’m capable of.”
It took a second to register.
“What did you call me....?”
Her cheeks turned pink when he smiled.
“Jaan?”
She looked at him.
“Do you not like it? I won’t call you that anymore if you don’t.”
“No....it’s not that. I wasn’t expecting it....that’s all.”
*My love and my life...*, he had told her.
She hid her embarrassment with his embrace, and curled up against him. As she rested her head against his chest, her ears filled the emptiness with the sound of her heartbeat, which they shared. To Abhay, she embodied the vitality of life, and the warmth of love.
“Say it again....”
He dipped his head and whispered.
“Jaan....”
It was enough to make her melt. A simple nickname was enough to make her feel blissfully numb inside.
He walked them back to her villa, only this time to spend some time together. She was confident that he wouldn’t suddenly leave again. She turned on the lights, and saw how drenched they were, herself more than Abhay. The fabrics of their clothing clung tight to their skin.
“Let me get you some.....”
She opened her wardrobe with zeal, as if they lived together or were married, only to find nothing to give him besides an extra towel. Abhay walked up behind her and stared into it.
“I hate to break it to you, Piya, but these lovely clothes won’t fit me.”
She elbowed him in the stomach and hit her own funny bone. She winced, and he stood unfazed.
“Ouch?”
“I hate you,” she muttered.
“That’s harsh.....after all we’ve been through?,” he teased.
She pulled out one of her nighties and handed Abhay the towel.
“Just this?” He lifted an eyebrow, unbuttoning his shirt without second thought. “Not that I’m complaining.”
Piya couldn’t help but stare, and shook her head. She ran into the bathroom to change, and to hide. He chuckled and peeled off his shirt, placing it to the side to dry.
She watched from the door and sneezed. He smirked and slicked his hair back, wiping himself dry.
“I told you you’d get sick.”
All it took was one look at him to decide her opinion on the consequences.
“It was worth it.”
He closed the space between them, pulled her against his body, and touched foreheads. Her fingers caressed the crescent tattoo and watched the mix of colored light fill it in. Their world stopped for a moment, ambient with the pitter patter of rain. Abhay swept her off her feet, and placed her on the bed like a feather.
“I was rude last time. Leaving you alone all of a sudden.” He touched her bottom lip with his thumb. She remembered.
“What happened then?”
“The beast wanted to make you his dinner.”
He recalled the dream again. It was well understood that he was walking a fine line between control and frenzy. And Piya wasn’t making it easier.
“You could’ve. And then wiped my memory.”
“I was really close to. But that would’ve brought us closer, wouldn’t it? I didn’t want that, back then.”
“As if we aren’t close now. You tried so hard to put distance between us, but it didn’t work in the end.”
He brushed her cheek with the tip of his nose.
“I’m glad I failed.”
Piya gazed into his eyes. The want was there. He couldn’t contain his emotions and pressed himself onto her frail body. Her lips parted, and found herself at his mercy. He ran his nose down her face.
“Can I just have you tonight, jaan?”, he whispered. Piya closed her eyes, responding to his touches.
“You always did.”
He pressed his lips to hers and weaved his fingers in her hair. She felt a slight warmth from his skin, or maybe it was her own. It was hard to tell.
“You’re warm....”
“Does it feel warm enough? I rarely use this ability....”
“Yes....”
She stopped shivering, and took a liking to the heat from his skin.
“Good...”
Again they kissed, bodies melting into each other. He deepened it slowly, sneaking his tongue in. Piya was caught pleasantly off guard and welcomed the gesture. It was times like this where she wished she didn’t have to breathe like him. He caressed her features whilst she caught her breath. Her heartbeat, beating so strongly against his chest, made it feel like they shared it.
Along with the warmth, he felt just a bit more human tonight.
“Mine......” he whispered. Piya smiled. If she were to hear that word from anyone, it was him.
*Not just yours.....*, the brooding voice spoke.
The beast too wanted his claim. Abhay stopped for a moment. He felt the pull towards that frenzy, as her blood became more apparent and fragrant to his senses. His eyes colored, and body dropped in temperature again, reminding him that he’d never be anywhere close to being human again. He craved the sight of the pulsing veins down her throat. So much to drink, without barrier. His lips reached their location, sucking and tugging places where he could smell her nectar best. His fangs slipped out.
Piya knew what he wanted from when he stopped. She recognized the look from his past, the subtle gaze of a starved predator. The cobalt brewed a storm in his irises as his thrust grew. She caressed his cheek and tried to gain his attention. His cold breath brushed over her skin in dry heaves.
“Do you want my blood?”
His fingers crumpled the bedsheets. Again, he had to put up a fight.
“No....no I don’t....”
She rubbed his back, muscles tensed up at the slightest remark of her blood. She realized that she made him extremely vulnerable in this regard.
“You do. Don’t be stubborn.”
“Piya....”
“Like I said before, holding back will only be more dangerous.” She said. “I don’t mind. Don’t stop if you want it.”
Every vein was visible to him, pulsing rapidly with fresh blood. His interpretation of ambrosia. His lips parted.
She took each breath calmly and ran her fingers through his hair. “Please? You’ll feel better.”
Abhay stared quietly, and let her convince him. Control wasn’t possible anymore, not with her unrelenting encouragement. The beast was right, he’d have to give in at some point. It was the nature of their relationship.
Better adjust now, than regret later.
He leaned down, pressing his lips over the base of her neck, and swirled his tongue over the veins. His eyes closed in satisfaction as his fangs cut into her soft flesh, like a knife into butter, quick and deep. Piya gasped, and felt a surge of warmth and cold where his lips circled the wound. Her whole body ached, and not in a bad way. It felt euphoric, so pleasurable that holding back any sound was growing increasingly difficult. A sweet moan escaped her lips and she held him tighter, wanting him to drink more. And Abhay, he feared of getting addicted to her taste, and thus draining her dry. The sweetness was like he remembered, everlasting, maybe better than the last two times. The heady rush he always experienced when drinking human blood, but this time Piya’s, unleashed his desires and reciprocated her hold.
I want you....I want more....
He pinned her down by the wrists, piercing his teeth deeper into the milky skin, as much as he could, wracking her body with intense bursts of pleasure.
Centuries I’ve spent mastering control....and you’ve broken it in little time.
He loved what he was tasting, and what he was hearing. As did the beast. One and the same. At times, this was the truth. The bloodlust guided his actions. He let go in one spot and nudged her chin higher with his nose, letting him bite down again. He cradled her head with one hand, her fingers gripping the sheets.
She lost herself in the sensation, mind numb but body begging for release. The bond surged in strength again. And his lustful emotions were unconfined, acting this time as a catalyst for her own. Should even a breath of his brush last her skin, she wouldn’t be able to control herself.
He took one more long sip, before letting go. Piya winced when moving, with the wound losing whatever it was that made it pleasurable.
It took him a second to regain control, after which he stopped her from moving too much.
“Shh.....let me fix it...”
He eased her head back and leaned down, running his tongue over the cuts. Piya relaxed and examined him. It was a strange mix of satisfaction and remorse, the former dominating slightly over the latter. She wiped his lips with her thumb, pressing it to his mouth. Again, his tongue swiped past.
“Are you alright?”
She nodded. It wasn’t weakness that was bothering her, but a desperation that came from his inhuman charm. And his not so normal emotions.
“You’ve been doing....that thing again.....”, she whispered, shivering and begging for his touch. Well fed, and back in his element, he smirked, and when he tried to tease her, she grew impatient.
“Doing what?” He asked, feigning innocence.
She pulled him back in for the kiss, and things began to heat up. He slipped his hand underneath her nightie and laid a palm flat on her back. Slowly, it creeped up, his fingers suggesting a hook or two be undone. She might’ve approved his request, had the doorbell not disrupted them.
They froze. The bell rang again, Abhay frowned, and reluctantly let Piya free from under him. She frantically fixed her clothes and hair and just barely stood up.
“I’ll be back.” She kissed his cheek, and ran out. It was Kabir, switching hands between a bag and his own umbrella. The wind seemed to have picked up since they returned.
“Hey, Piya. I was in the area and needed to drop these off.”
He handed her the bag, containing a couple books that he borrowed from her for an assignment.
“Oh, thank you so much. I hope they were helpful.”
“Very. Thanks again for letting me borrow them.”
He scratched the back of his head and noticed the pair of black shoes at the door. He had a good feeling of whom they belonged to, and realized he really needed to let it go. Piya noticed the same and tried to pretend like nothing was amiss. Misha and Ruhi already got too curious and wouldn’t stop asking their questions. Kabir always got quiet during those conversations, though he remained polite.
Definitely another development people had to get used to.
“I should go now. Goodnight.”
“See you later. Goodnight.”
She shut the door and expected him to magically show up behind her. Nothing of the sort happened. Walking on her tiptoes, she peeked into the bedroom to see the now moody Abhay sitting at the edge of her bed, resting against the headboard with a pillow in lap. He stared out the window towards the pouring rain, pretending not to care. Piya climbed onto his lap and cupped his cheeks.
“What happened, why so upset?”
He didn’t say anything, but wrapped his arms tight around her waist and stared at her.
“He’s gone now.”
“Sure. Gone after ruining the mood, is all.”
His jealousy was quite cute, when it wasn’t afflicted onto its target. Piya looked into his eyes. The cobalt looked stormy, its colors swirling violently.
“You know I only have feelings for you?”
He knew, very well.
“I’ve never doubted that. But forgive me, I won’t be able to get along with your friends. For your sake and for my sanity’s sake.”
“And I won’t force you. But Abhay....I’m sure there are other humans you’d get along well with.”
“I know. You.”
She frowned.
“That doesn’t count.”
He ignored that last part and went back to what they were doing, or at least some semblance of it. Piya turned and laid herself against his chest, placing his arms around her waist. He nuzzled her hair and stared out of the window at the rain, perhaps wanting to enjoy it with her a second time.
