A talland well built man in jeans and white shirt, with greying sideburns

“She ishaving affair with an old man?” her father felt his blood boil

Avi clearedhis throat nervously

“Appa”Samidha called out to her Dad to distract him

Herfather turned to her

Samidhatried to get up

Herfather saw the bulge

It madehim more angry

Hermother leaned on the smooth concrete stair side wall painted with red paint tomatch the floor

She didn’thave an ounce of courage to face the situation

Samidhabegged for help through her eyes

Hermother looked at her in despair

“Umm…Avyaan Singh” he extended a nervous hand

Herfather accepted it civilly

“Hmm” wasall he said though

“How areu” Mr Rao asked Samidha

She stood up and crept toward him to hug him like she always did, and ruffled his grey hair usually

He stepped back not allowing that

“Where is Shivu?” she asked suddenly

“Out with friends” her father said tersely

“Talk tome… you both are not talking to me properly” she moaned

Her mother groaned

“I shouldn’thave come? I should have? You don’t have to hug me” her voice broke “Butatleast talk to me nicely” she ordered wiping her nose like a petulant child

Avyaan’sheart broke when he watched her beg for attention

“How faralong?” her father asked in kannada studiously avoiding looking at the bulge

“4? 4.2”she said joyous

Her mother’s shoulders slumped, she would have felt the belly given her massages with coconut oil just like Ajji had done for her

“Hmm” her father sighed

“I will bring coffee” her mother ran to the kitchen

Samidha got up again hoping Avyaan and her father will talk

“Ur family has agreed?” her father quizzed him

“Umm.. no…not really” he said sadly

“So… we both are in same spot” Mr Rao leaned back, relieved? At finding a commonality.

“Yes”Avyaan agreed politely

“So…. Oldpeople do have a reason” her father argued

Avyaanlowered his gaze

“She cameto me… she didn’t go to her mother… to say she wanted to marry Bikram” he said

Avi bristled…unreasonably

“He wasin a top post in the army” her father continued…. “secret… very important”

“I get it”Avi thought not looking up just starting at Mr Rao’s feet

“Adirsta”“they say in Kannada” he said quietly

Hermother made the longest coffee possible

Samidha justleaned on the wall and stared at her

“Did unot go to work?” she asked

“Umm.. no”her mother replied

Stillfacing the smooth concrete kitchen counter

Samidha noticedleftover lunch items in small bowls

Shewondered what was made

“Udupistyle sambar and kane rava fry… the famous semolina covered fish fry? Or mangourad dal red chilli chutney”

Her mouthwatered as her thoughts wandered the culinary lane

Her babykicked passionately

“Ammawhat was for lunch”

“Chitrannamango gojju” her mother said

Samidhawhimpered

“Can Ihave some?” she asked pointing to the much used patterned steel bowls

“Hmm” her mother brought out a steel dinner thali from a old iron wall pouch/like basket

They weretaught from 5 years to wash their own dinner plate and stack in that basket…when they were a joint family of 15 there used to be as many plates… the plates were still there…

Her mother emptied the bowls

“Hayeee…MY plate Amma” Samidha cackled rubbing the kannada engraving

Her mother peered at it startled… the odds of her picking it out of a stack of 15?

Somehow her plate had made it back to her….

Anju you are a ROCKSTAR! Amazing courage. Never mind how old you are.... I am thrilled you have a baby. Dont give a ---- for anyone. If you start living your life based on 7 billion opinions then you are screwed ..woman!!!

Infact i feel i need more courage now. O have a human depending on me and i am struggling to get a day job even with 12+ years due to gap due to childcare

People feel when u have a child u will not be able to handle mid management level hectic job and no company is ready to employ at lower level saying u have too much exp. I am struggling with mild depression since i have never been without a job. My husband has a decent job.

But today i am better after spending time with my brother who came and stayed with a couple of days just to cheer mw up

Wow.... waiting for the emotions to flow from Sam ! Etched stainless plates 😳 Meal from Amma and hug from Appa, she will be good thru her pregnancy

I still get a kick out of it when I go back to my moms to find the plate and tumbler with my initials.

Thanks Jas. Yes I’m back home but will do another trip closer to his surgery. It’s little complicated. Its going to be a few months of short term disability for him. Planning to get my parents soon. Thank you
