Okay, I searched on Wikipedia, and it says that SRK made a statement that players of Pakistani cricket team were not bought by IPL clubs for 2010 tournament. He criticized this fact, due to which he was condemned by Shiv Sena.

So again, the controversy didn't happen because of the content of the film, but SRK's statement just like it happened with Dilwale, because of his intolerant statement. That means MNIK didn't get any help because of the controversy.

Controversies only benefit the film at the box office, if it is created because of it's content. Not because of some Pakistani actor starring in the movie, or an actor's controversial statements.

Then what about Udta Punjab?The controversy surrounding that movie happened because of the content. Why did it only do 58 crores?

It was a niche adult film. 58 Crores was really good for that movie. If you see the box office collections of other movies of Shahid, Alia and Kareena, released during that period of time, Udta Punjab did comparitively great.

Kapoor and Sons did 69 crores (HIT). Ki and Ka did 51 crores (semi hit). Udta Punjab did 58 crores (average). Udta Punjab did worse than both of those movies despite the controversy.

Thanks for bringing the collections. You can see that there is not much difference between the collections of all three movies, despite K&S and Ki&Ka being lighthearted family-friendly movies and having more commercial appeal. Infact Udta Punjab has higher collections than Ki&Ka. Verdict doesn't matter here, because it is given based on distributor's share. Here we are talking about audience watching a film because of controversy, so only box office numbers can be used to see that. Udta Punjab without controversy would've collected only around 40 Crores and had flopped.

40 crores without the controversy? So the controversy only added 18 crores. That's not a lot. Padmavat lost around 100 crores because it wasn't released in many areas.

And Kapoor and sons wasn't light hearted, Udta Punjab had a much bigger star cast than Ki and Ka. Also, Udta Punjab wasn't that niche of a movie. It was a very similar movie to Kaminey (2009 ) which made 40 crores (it would probably translate to more than 70 crores in 2016).

@cool_boy,
The comparisons between Padmaavat and Udta Punjab doesn't make sense. Udta Punjab will not make extra 100 Crores due to controversy, because the target audience was limited. You can't say that controversy only brought extra 18 Crores because the movie was niche. So that extra 18 Crores was alot for that film.

Nah, Kaminey was much more massy film, and it's dialogues were popular during it's release. Udta Punjab was only targeted at urban multiplexes.

Lighthearted in the sense, that it was not a dark film. Yes, the movie had it's intense moments, but for the most part, it was a feel-good film.

Udta Punjab wasn't banned in many areas like Padmaavat was. The gains that Padmaavat got from the controversy were probably lost because of the bans.

Kaminey and Udta Punjab had similar themes. They were both from the same genre. The only plus that Kaminey had and Udta Punjab didn't was a hit song. On the hand, Udta Punjab's star cast was much bigger than Kaminey.

Kapoor and sons wasn't more of a feel good movie than udta punjab.

I never said that Padmaavat getting banned didn't affect its collections. You can see my first comment on the thread. Yes, Padmaavat would've done better if released all over, but it also got benefit from the controversy. In the end, the ban neutralized the affect of controversy. So saying that the controversy helped the film at the box office is wrong, but saying that the ban caused the underperformance of the film is also:)not correct. Because the ban was caused because of the controversy. The movie would've done the same business without controversy and no ban.

Both Kaminey and Udta Punjab were adult films. But Kaminey was a much more entertaining flick.

Kapoor & Sons wasn't more feel-good than udta Punjab, really? Kapoor & Sons was a family drama film. Udta Punjab was a dark comedy, a genre which is not hugely popular in India.
