With Ekta Kapoor thinking of making the Mahabharat, have just posted a note on the Kyunki website about the role of Draupadi. Wanted to make a little tribute to the "original".

The one and only Rupa Ganguly.

I was very young when Mahabharat was being screened on tv. Literally used to stop the Traffic. there was nearly 100% viewership then. all these TRPs etc nothing made sense. every sunday morning at 9.00 a.m. everyone's house used to be filled with the "oh so popular" strains of the title song. everybody, hindu, muslim, sikh, christian watched that television screen without batting an eyelid waiting eagerly to know what happens next.

Anyway I could go on and on and I could talk about every character and how well each of the actors portrayed the roles. and mind you they were all unknown actors except for maybe a few of them but B.R. Chopra really got them to act. Bhishm pitamah, Krishna, Duryodhan, Vidhur, Dhritarashtra, Dronacharya. But this is about Draupadi.

The variety of emotions displayed by Rupa was textbook in acting. Switching from the proud princess, to the dutiful wife(remember the acceptance of Subhadra scene), the obedient daughter-in-law(telling Kunti she will take care of Nakul and Sahdev in the forest when they were actually 2 of her husbands), the vengeful lady(the entire vastharan and all the sequences after that- this was undoubtedly the most powerful) to the heartbroken mother(when abhimanyu and when all of her sons die), Rupa portrayed all of it brilliantly.

"SUPERLATIVE" is the only word I have. I wish we could see more of her acting skills in different serials/ films. Take a bow, Rupa. You have earned it.
